In this paper, we introduce interlinking multimedia (iM), a pragmatic way to apply the linked data principles to fragments of multimedia items. We report on use cases showing the need for retrieving and describing multimedia fragments. We then introduce the principles for interlinking multimedia in the Web of Data, discussing potential solutions which sometimes highlight controversial debates regarding what the various representations of a Web resource span. We finally present methods for enabling a widespread use of interlinking multimedia.

Keyword-based search in general is particularly applicable if the searcher really knows what she is looking for and how to find it. But in many cases either the objectives of the searcher are intrinsically fuzzy or she has no idea of the appropriate keywords. One way to solve this problem is to navigate and explore the search space along a guided route. In this paper we show, how Linked Open Data can be adopted to facilitate an exploratory semantic search for video data. We present a prototype implementation of exploratory video search and give first results that show how traditional keyword-based search can be augmented by the use of Linked Open Data.

Multimedia educational resources play an important role in education, particularly for distance learning environments. With the rapid growth of the multimedia web, large numbers of educational video resources are increasingly being created by several different organizations. It is crucial to explore, share, reuse, and link these educational resources for better e-learning experiences. Most of the video resources are currently annotated in an isolated way, which means that they lack semantic connections. Thus, providing the facilities for annotating these video resources is highly demanded. These facilities create the semantic connections among video resources and allow their metadata to be understood globally. Adopting Linked Data technology, this paper introduces a video annotation and browser platform with two online tools: Annomation and SugarTube. Annomation enables users to semantically annotate video resources using vocabularies defined in the Linked Data cloud. SugarTube allows users to browse semantically linked educational video resources with enhanced web information from different online resources. In the prototype development, the platform uses existing video resources for the history courses from the Open University (United Kingdom). The result of the initial development demonstrates the benefits of applying Linked Data technology in the aspects of reusability, scalability, and extensibility.

We present a systematic approach to the design of multimedia ontologies based on the MPEG-7 standard and domain-specific vocabularies. The limitations of MPEG-7 in describing the semantics of highly structured domains like sports or medicine has led to an upsurge of interest in adopting an integrated approach to the design of ontologies. We follow suit and use MPEG-7 to model structural and low-level aspects of multimedia documents. The high-level semantics are modeled using a domain-specific ontology designed for soccer games. The integration of these ontologies is achieved by providing appropriate links to the individual ontologies. As a proof-of-concept, we describe a video annotation tool implemented as a plugin for the widely used Protégé ontology editor. The advantage of our methodologies lies in the fact that we use semantic web compliant languages and tools that results in alleviating the interoperability issues currently plaguing the multimedia and the semantic web communities.

Linked Open Data has become one of the driving forces for the emerging Semantic Web, which enables interlinking and integrating former proprietary data to the global linked data by using RDF as a standard data format. In this paper we show how to integrate the database of the open academic video search plattform yovisto.com with the linked open data cloud and how to augment yovisto video search by including semantically interrelated linked open data.

Abstract In this technical demonstration we show an integrated web system for video search and annotation based on ontologies. The system is composed by three components: the Orione ontology-based search engine, the Sirio\ footnote {Sirio was the hound of Orione. It was a dog so swift that no prey could escape it.} search interface, and the Pan web-based video annotation tool. The system is currently being developed within the EU IM3I project.

The Semantic Web provides approaches and tools that allow for the processing and analysis of online content, including multimedia resources. Multimedia resources like videos, audios, and photos are increasingly common in contemporary Web content. Cinematographic works (also known as film contents) stand out among these resources as one of the most recent attractions on the Internet. An important tool employed recently in the semantic indexation of digital resources and film content is ontological annotation. This paper studies the current multimedia ontologies related to the film contents on the web. The relevant indicators were discussed comparatively, and some open issues were reviewed in details. In this way, the authors managed to integrate the metadata related to online films practically into the web of data.

While end users could easily share and tag the multimedia resources online, the searching and reusing of the inside content of multimedia, such as a certain area within an image or a ten minutes segment within a one-hour video, is still difficult. Linked data is a promising way to interlink media fragments with other resources. Many applications in Web 2.0 have generated large amount of external annotations linked to media fragments.
