Abstract

Abstract Linked Data is a way of exposing and sharing data as resources on the Web and interlinking them with semantically related resources. In the last three years significant amounts of data have been generated, increasingly forming a globally connected, distributed data space. For multimedia content, metadata are a key factor for efficient management, organization, and retrieval.

At CNR ISTI, we are developing an infrastructure for MultiMedia Metadata Management (4M) to support the integration of media from different sources. Moreover, metadata—data about the data, can help discovering data based on features as, e.g., by whom they were created, when, or for which purpose. These associated features make the data more interpretable and assist in turning it into useful information. This chapter briefly introduces the concepts of metadata and Linked Data—highly structured and interlinked data, their standards and their usages, with some elaboration on the role of Linked Data in bioeconomy.

Linked Data and the Semantic Web

The term linked data is entering into common vocabulary and, as most interests us in this instance, into the specific terminology of library and information science. The concept is complex; we can summarize it as that set of best practices required for publishing and connecting structured data on the web for use by a machine. It is an expression used to describe a method of exposing, sharing and connecting data via Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) on the web. With linked data, in other words, we refer to data published on the web in a format readable, interpretable and, most of all, useable by machine, whose meaning is explicitly defined by a string of words and markers. In this way we constitute a linked data network (hence linked data) belonging to a domain (which constitutes the initial context), connected in turn to other external data sets (that is, those outside of the domain), in a context of increasingly extended relationships. Next is presented the Linked Open Data cloud (LOD), which collects the open data sets available on the web, and the paradigm of its exponential growth occurring in a very brief period of time which demonstrates the level of interest that linked data has garnered in organizations and institutions of different types.

Multimedia Annotations on the Semantic Web

Multimedia and the Semantic Web: in theory, it is a perfect match. The Semantic Web, on the one hand, provides a stack of languages and technologies for annotating Web resources, enabling machine processing of metadata describing semantics of web content. Multimedia applications, on the other hand, require metadata descriptions of their media items to facilitate search and retrieval, intelligent processing and effective presentation of multimedia information. This need for multimedia metadata was recognized by the media industry long ago. Semantic Web technologies, however, still play a very minor role within multimedia applications and most approaches employ non-RDF based techniques. This paper describes a number of current approaches to multimedia metadata and provides an inventory of the open issues to achieve a practical integration of multimedia metadata into the Semantic Web.

Semantic Technology to Exploit Digital Content Exposed as Linked Data

The paper illustrates the research result of the application of semantic technology to ease the use and reuse of digital contents exposed as Linked Data on the web. It focuses on the specific issue of explorative research for the resource selection: a context dependent semantic similarity assessment is proposed in order to compare datasets annotated through terminologies exposed as Linked Data (e.g. habitats, species). Semantic similarity is shown as a building block technology to sift linked data resources. From semantic similarity application, we derived a set of recommendations underlying open issues in scaling the similarity assessment up to the Web of Data.

Streaming video has recently surpassed peer-to-peer networks in terms of network capacity hunger. Reports estimate a share of 40 % of peak network capacity dedicated to entertainment, mostly streaming video. A large share of this traffic originates from web-based services. YouTube alone takes up to 8 % of the prime time Internet traffic. While transmission currently works in a best effort system, multimedia information systems on the web are far from being perfect. Retrieval, annotation, validated and useful metadata, reliable and trusted services, and user interaction and context-based adaptation are still under discussion and issues to research.

Semantic Services, Interoperability and Web Applications

The term “Linked Data” refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web. These best practices have been adopted by an increasing number of data providers over the last three years, leading to the creation of a global data space containing billions of assertions— the Web of Data. In this article, the authors present the concept and technical principles of Linked Data, and situate these within the broader context of related technological developments. They describe progress to date in publishing Linked Data on the Web, review applications that have been developed to exploit the Web of Data, and map out a research agenda for the Linked Data community as it moves forward.

In this paper, we introduce interlinking multimedia (iM), a pragmatic way to apply the linked data principles to fragments of multimedia items. We report on use cases showing the need for retrieving and describing multimedia fragments. We then introduce the principles for interlinking multimedia in the Web of Data, discussing potential solutions which sometimes highlight controversial debates regarding what the various representations of a Web resource span. We finally present methods for enabling a widespread use of interlinking multimedia.

The goal of the W3C's Media Annotation Working Group (MAWG) is to promote interoperability between multimedia metadata formats on the Web. As experienced by everybody, audiovisual data is omnipresent on today's Web. However, different interaction interfaces and especially diverse metadata formats prevent unified search, access, and navigation. MAWG has addressed this issue by developing an interlingua ontology and an associated API. This article discusses the rationale and core concepts of the ontology and API for media resources. The specifications developed by MAWG enable interoperable contextualized and semantic annotation and search, independent of the source metadata format, and connecting multimedia data to the Linked Data cloud. Some demonstrators of such applications are also presented in this article.
