Abstract

In today's world the internet is connecting not only people but things. The computing concept of the "Internet of Things (IoT)"describes the idea to connect everyday physical objects to the internet. IoT platforms provide the backbone for applications in areas like Smart Home, Connected Vehicles and Industrial IoT. In this thesis, we explore the question of the best IoT platform with a focus on reliability, scalability and heterogeneity. To answer this question, we search the market for IoT platforms, prototypes and proposals, examine them based on our comparison model and rate the platforms in a five star system. The criteria for the parts of the comparison model include replication, availability, authentication and authorization, encryption, security incidents and audits, development and market longevity for reliability, hosting, Edge and Fog Computing, limits of the infrastructure and network and load balancing for scalability, device restrictions, messaging and dev...

Widespread adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) applications assumes a sustainable ecosystem of firms creating, distributing, and using these applications. Such an ecosystem often forms around a platform that implements commonly used functionality and offers it to the members of the ecosystem for creating applications and services. In IoT, such a platform may be materialized in a form of a cloud platform that supports the management of connected devices, and the development and use of the applications based on them. A number of cloud platforms targeting IoT applications are available in the market; to prosper, they need to assist the providers of the IoT applications in designing and developing the applications, as well as in deploying and operating the application software. In this paper, a framework for evaluating the IoT platforms from the perspective of how widely they cover the potential needs of the application providers is introduced. Based on the framework, the maturity of the available IoT platforms is evaluated, by using the publicly available information about the platforms' features and supporting services. As the results of this initial analysis suggest, none of the platforms today offers the comprehensive support. This can be seen as a factor contributing to a slow adaption of the IoT platforms, and therefore to the slower-than-expected takeoff of the IoT ecosystem in general.

Towards a Dynamic Scalable IoT Computing Platform Architecture

Internet of Things (IoT) has become an interesting topic among technology titans and different business groups. IoT platforms have been introduced to support the development of IoT applications and services. Such platforms connect the real and virtual worlds of objects, systems and people. Even though IoT platforms increasingly target various domains, they still suffer from various limitations. (1) Integrating hardware devices from different providers/vendors (thereafter referenced as heterogeneous hardware) is still a subtle task. (2) Providing a scalable solution without altering the end user privacy (e.g., through the use of cloud platforms) is hard to achieve. (3) Handling IoT Applications reliability as well as platform reliability is still not fully supported. (4) Addressing Safety-critical applications needs are still not covered by such platforms. A novel scalable dynamic computing platform architecture is proposed to address such limitations and provide simultaneous support for five non-functional requirements. The supported non-functional requirements are scalability, reliability, privacy, timing for real-time systems and safety. The proposed architecture uses a novel network topology design, virtualization and containerization concepts, along with a service-oriented architecture. We present and use a smart home case study to evaluate how traditional IoT platform architectures are compared to the proposed architecture, in terms of supporting the five non-functional requirements.

This paper proposes a review of main examples populating the wide landscape of IoT platforms and their comparison based on the IoT-A reference architecture. An effective model for Selection of the best IoT platform: A critical review of challenges and solutions

The process of making an informed decision on which Internet of Things (IoT) platform to choose is an extremely important one in the modern world. The choice procedure is made more difficult as a result of (a) the vast number of IoT platforms that are offered on the market for IoT applications and (b) the wide diversity of functions and solutions that are provided by these platforms. In this article, the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodologies for selecting the specific Internet of Things platform are taken into consideration. The TOPSIS method is used in this paper to select the best IoT platform. TOPSIS method is a common MCDM method. TOPSIS method used the idea of the best and cost criteria to compute the distance from it. During the IoT platform choice procedures, relevant aspects, such as the stability, consistency, protection, and privacy of IoT platforms, are regarded to be the most significant ones for making decisions.

Security, Trust and Implementation Limitations of Prominent IoT Platforms

Internet of Things (IoT) is indeed a novel technology wave that is bound to make its mark, where anything and everything (Physical objects) is able to communicate over an extended network using both wired and wireless protocols. The term " physical objects " means that any hardware device that can sense a real world parameter and can push the output based on that reading. Considering the number of such devices, volume of data they generate and the security concerns , not only from a communication perspective but also from its mere physical presence outside a secure/monitored vault demands innovative architectural approaches , applications and end user systems. A middleware platform/framework for IoT should be able to handle communication between these heterogeneous devices, their discoveries and services it offers in real time. A move from internet of computers to internet of anything and everything is increasing the span of security threats and risks. A comparative study of existing prominent IoT platforms will help in identifying the limitations and gaps thereby acting as the benchmark in building an efficient solution.

Scalable IoT Platform for Heterogeneous Devices in Smart Environments

The Internet of Things (IoT) is envisioned as a ubiquitous computing infrastructure in which everything becomes connected, enabling gigantic information exchange among Things and people. These connected smart Things generate an enormous amount of data which need to be efficiently managed to form a unified global IoT. Unfortunately, due to the lack of acceptable open standards, communication protocols, and support for device/service discovery, the recent IoT deployments in smart environments (e.g., smart home, smart building, smart city) are posing imperative challenges related to interoperability, discovery, and the configuration of deployed objects, since the number of objects is expected to grow over time. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to provide open and scalable solutions for the discovery of devices (i.e., Things), their configuration, and data management. This paper introduces an open and scalable IoT platform by adopting the modular characteristics of edge computing for smart environments. This paper: (i) performs a systematic literature review of IoT-based infrastructures and analyzes the scalability requirements; (ii) proposes a layered IoT platform for smart environments that fosters heterogeneity, interoperability, discovery, and scalability; and (iii) demonstrates the applicability of the proposed solution by relying on a comprehensive study of a Väre smart building use case at Aalto University.

Accompanying the Internet of Things (IoT) is a demand of advanced applications and services utilizing the potential of the IoT environment. Monitoring the environment for a provision of context-aware services to the human beings is one of the new trends in our future life. The IoTivity Cloud is one of the most notable open-source platform bringing an opportunity to collect, analyze, and interpret a huge amount of data available in the IoT environment. Based on the IoTivity Cloud, we aim to develop a novel platform for comprehensive monitoring of a future network, which facilitates on-demand data collection to enable the network behavior prediction and the quality of user experience maintenance. In consideration of performance evaluation of the monitoring platform, this paper presents results of a preliminary test on the data acquisition/supply process in the IoTivity Cloud.

  397. A Zusammenfassung In der heutigen Welt verbindet das Internet nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch Dinge. Das Konzept "Internet der Dinge (engl. Internet of Things, IoT)" beschreibt die Idee, materielle Gegenstände mit dem Internet zu verbinden. IoT Plattformen bieten einen Rahmen für Anwendungen in Bereichen wie Smart Home, Connected Vehicles und industriellem IoT. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir die Frage nach der besten IoT-Plattform mit dem Fokus auf Zuver- lässigkeit, Skalierbarkeit und Heterogenität. Um diese Frage zu beantworten, durchsuchen wir den Markt nach IoT Plattformen und Prototypen, vergleichen diese mit einem Fokus auf Zuverlässigkeit, Skalierbarkeit und Heterogenität basierend auf unserem Vergleichsmodell und bewerten die Plat- tformen in einem Fünf-Sterne-System. Die Kriterien für die Teile des Vergleichsmodells umfassen Replikation, Verfügbarkeit, Authentifizierung und Autorisierung, Verschlüsslung, Sicherheitsvor- fälle und -prüfungen, Entwicklung und Marktlebensdauer für Zuverlässigkeit, Hosting, Edge-und Fog-Computing, Grenzen der Infrastruktur, Netzwerk und Lastenausgleich für Skalierbarkeit, Gerä- teeinschränkungen, Nachrichten-und Geräteprotokolle, Programmiersprachen und Flexibilität für Heterogenität sowie Benutzerfreundlichkeit, Preismodelle und Alleinstellungsmerkmale. Wir stellen fest, dass sich die meisten Kriterien nicht in den verwendeten Technologien oder Algorithmen unterscheiden, sondern ob sie implementiert sind oder nicht. Trotz des geringen Standardisierungsgrades werden die meisten Kriterien plattformübergreifend auf ähnliche Weise umgesetzt. Die insgesamt am besten bewertete Plattform ist Microsoft Azure IoT Hub mit 4,25 von 5,0
  398. Sternen, gefolgt von IBM Watson IoT (3,88 Sterne). Auch der Plattform-Prototyp OceanConnect von Huawei zeigt vielversprechende Ergebnisse (3,0 Sterne).

Internet of Things (IoT)is the third wave of economy after the first and second being agriculture and industry, respectively, paving the way for the fourth industrial revolution (4IR). IoT is a combination of all the revolutionary technologies in the last two centuries. More than a billion of smart devices have been developed across the world by more than 10 vendors to satisfy billions of needs that are trusted by 98% of economic actors. This study describes design and implementation of IoT architectures stressing on scalability, integration, and interoperability of heterogeneous IoT systems. It gives answers toi) how systems can be designed to become easily configurable and customizable for a specific IoT infrastructure? And ii) how Investors, producers and consumers can be integrated on the same page of an IoT platform? We have developed a master database and directories from top chart IoT nomenclature, frameworks, vendors, devices, platforms and architectures and gathered data from 27 big online resources commonly used by Forbes, Business week and CNBC. Also, datasheets of IoT equipment by vendors (e.g. Intel, IBM, ARM, Microchip, Schneider, and CISCO), used tools (e.g. Lab center Proteus, AutoCAD and Excel), and platforms (e.g. Visual Studio, Eclipse) are combined to build directories of plethora of data. The main outcome of this work culminates in providing a seamless solution and recommendations for various infrastructures (hardware and software), for effective and integrated resource utilization and management in an IoT perspective.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) platform (often referred to as IoT middleware) is a software that enables connecting the machines and devices and then acquisition, processing, transformation, organization and storing machine and sensor data. The objective of the research behind this paper is to establish a state of the art in the development of IoT platforms. In specific, here we present the main conclusions regarding the functional and design perspective to current IoT platforms and related research. The focus was made on cloud-based IoT platforms with significant user base and successful record of exploitation. We also consider the relevant theoretical foundations of IoT platform research, mostly by taking into account the results of European research. The conclusions and respective discussion are meant to be used in the development of a formal runtime model-driven IoT platform, which conceptual design decisions are shortly presented.

Moreover, IoT platforms are currently growing up into the market. Each platform provides valuable and specific services and features. This paper presents a survey on IoT platforms, discussing their architectures and fundamentals of IoT building elements and communication protocols between them. The aim of this paper is to help the reader choose a suitable and adequate IoT platform for own demands in the huge number and variety of platforms available. This survey provides a comprehensive view of the components and features of the state-of-the-art IoT platforms.
