Exploring the Trans-Gender Issues in Pakistani Print Media

The study attempts to analyze the portrayal of transgender in Bollywood movies and also explored viewpoints of transgender's regarding their representation in selected Bollywood movies. The study focused on them with reference to their problems and challenges. Queer and framing theories provide theoretical implications for the study. The queer theory implies that media content establishes the identities of transgenders through characterization in stereotypical ways, while framing theory infers that media adopt particular frames to enable viewers to think about the transgender's community in a specific manner. Content analysis, survey and intensive interviews were used as research methods. The study concluded that there is a stereotypical representation of transgenders in Bollywood movies. They are portrayed as sex workers, beggars, criminals and dancers. However, the transgender community is looking for a change regarding the stigmatization and misconceptions about them.

The key objective of this study was to examine the representations of men and women in print media in Pakistan. Gender role stereotyping and sexism in print media is not a low-profile gender issue as printed communication and contents still hold an important place in contemporary digital world. Keeping in view the importance of newspapers as the leading source of credible content/messages, this paper examined gender stereotyping and sexism in print media in Pakistan and attempted to highlight whether print media reproduces or challenges gender stereotypes and sexism? Keeping in view the complexity of sexism in print media, content and discourse analyses were performed on four widely read national news papers. The findings have been placed within the socio-cultural context of Pakistani society and feminists theories. The study’s findings indicated that print media in Pakistan reinforces gender stereotypes and provide little challenge to gender stereotyped imagery of males and females.

Pakistan is the second largest Islamic state in the world. Islam has given equal rights to everyone. Through electronic and print media, we found that being an Islamic state; still transgender are neglected by the government and the local society. There is many NGO's working for human rights, but also they have ignored the transgender. We found, that in Pakistan the transgender are ignored in every walk of life including, education, government jobs, health care and even security for their life. In 2013, Supreme Court of Pakistan has given rights to transgender which still are not implemented in the community. Not only the society, but their families are not accepting them as their family members. The objectives of this review article were to review and highlight various aspects of issues faced by the transgender community of Pakistan.

The increased focus on trans lives across a variety of media has brought to light the difficult relationship between trans audiences of this media and the content produced about trans people. The print and digital content of newspapers is an important site for investigation because it can be readily accessed and shared quickly across a variety of platforms and there is a significant volume of content produced about trans people. In order to critically engage with the content produced about trans people in UK newspapers the views of trans audiences are important to assess the impact this media has on their daily lives. Academic work addressing trans lived experiences has been invaluable in understanding healthcare and relationships (Girshick, 2008; Hines, 2007) but there has been comparatively little specific work on trans media representation. The work that has been done found patterns of misrepresentation of trans identities (Kermode and TMW, 2010). This notable absence presents a potential barrier to understanding the ways in which trans media coverage impacts trans lives. With qualitative interviews at the centre of this research methodology, this paper considers trans representation in UK newspapers and analyses the effects on trans audiences. Interviews and focus groups were conducted online with self-defining trans people as experts on the ways newspaper reporting affects their lives. Online methods are useful for media reception research because of the amount of media consumption that occurs online. In the specific case of trans audiences online methods become necessary as a means to work with harder-to-reach communities with concerns about participating in research. The questions asked of trans audiences were influenced by a critical discourse analysis of trans coverage in UK newspapers over the period of one year to provide a snapshot of content. This initial search also provided example articles. During this period the newspaper complaints body issued guidelines on trans reporting so questions on the effectiveness of these were also asked. Participants were interviewed online across online focus group and instant message software. The findings that emerged from interviews revealed newspapers repeatedly influenced daily lives especially in relation to transphobia, misgendering and misrepresentation which were highlighted frequently. Some participants focused on the sensationalist nature of reporting which led to feelings of othering, whereas others were more focused on opportunities for resistance to the tropes about trans people produced. This paper considers these interviews in the current context in which they are produced and the wider discourse of trans media representation to address the impact this media has on trans audiences. By critically reflecting on the ways trans newspaper coverage affects trans audiences, this paper offers a unique and community influenced perspective that seeks different trans media representation that does not cause harm for trans readers.

The world in which we live is seen, on the one hand as a global village in some sense and, on the other, as a divided geography. In other words, it is localized and ghettoized simultaneously. The everyday life that transforms rapidly and in an amorphous notion bears testimony to the rise of new identities and belongings as well as new opposition and disengagement. This dilemma generates new and different notion of tension and conflict. Body and gender are considerably significant paradigms in terms of showing and representing this sense of physical, mental and ideological separation; so much so that they change continuously in the shade of freedom and security deadlock. As for media, they do not merely capture but formalized the social events and collective facts. They manipulate the viewer perception and attitudes. From institutional and traditional to individual, digitalized and social media, they redefine the meaning of distant and ambivalent identities and design some clichés about them. That is why this paper is an attempt to describe the representation of marginal identities in Turkish media mainly through television channels, newspapers, internet and films that may stimulate the controversial relationship between normals and deviant and between insider and outsider. For this purpose, in this study, it is focused on the question of how Turkish media display and represent the transvestites.

A trans identity is now available almost anywhere, and to anyone who does not feel comfortable in the gender role they were attributed with at birth, or has a gender identity at odds with the labels 'man' or 'woman' credited to them by formal authorities. These people face widespread prejudice and discrimination and may be at heightened risk for violence because of their gender identities and expression and there is a pervasive pattern of discrimination and prejudice against trans-people within society. This study analysed the 16-year publication period of 5 newspapers published in Turkey. These newspapers had a high circulation in the period they were published. The 1036 news items in the newspapers with high circulation were analysed within the spectrum of political views. The selected news items were analysed using qualitative content and discourse analysis methods. This study examines the censorship of transsexuals in Turkish newspapers and how they are reported in a homophobic manner by deliberately using the term "transvestite". The study's central hypothesis is that the voices of trans people in Turkey are heard primarily and almost exclusively in street protests. Trans people blacked out and excluded everywhere, can be the subject of newspapers with their existence when they protest and raise their voices. Otherwise, their positioning is in the form of crime, drugs, terrorism, etc. As Spivak (2020) states, the subaltern cannot speak; even if they speak, they cannot be heard. Because the system has subjectivised the consciousnesses carrying the ears through masculine domination, they make sense of social patterns since they reproduce what they hear in their manipulated minds. Even if the discourses of transgender people in street protests become news, they are subjected to severe manipulation. However, street protests are the only point where they can assert their existence.

The depiction of gender in Western media has been widely examined by researchers. This study intends to throw light on the current representation of women in Pakistani entertainment print media. Data were collected from four national newspapers including Dawn, The Nation, Daily Times, and The News for a period of 1 month. The techniques of Multimodal Corpus Linguistics and Content Analysis were opted to process data, and a blend of Feminist Stylistics and Critical Discourse Analysis methods was selected to analyze it. Results showed that women were overrepresented in entertainment news; however, discourse used to portray women was found asymmetrical when compared with that of men. The study attempted to show a wider picture of the gendered role of women in modern Pakistan.
