A PDA-based interface for a computer supported educational system

Using the new wireless technologies, mobile devices with small displays (handhelds, Personal Digital Assistants, mobile phones) are present in many environments. We are interested in the effective use of such mobile computing devices for supporting collaborative learning. We show its application in a study case: the teaching of Domotics. To reach this goal, we analyze the tasks which are susceptible of improvement through mobile computing. We will take as starting point a collaborative elearning environment of domotical design, based on the desktop metaphor, called Domosim-TPC. We pretend to adapt this tool to the characteristics of mobile devices. This evolution is based in a task-based analysis. In this paper we describe some learned lessons in the generation of users interfaces for a PDA-type devices.

Learning models based on competences facilitate the integration of students into the professional world, allowing further integration into the society, where learning is a necessity. The final aim deals with the topic "learning to learn", as essential step for continuous learning (lifelong learning). In the project introduced in this work we have used the Problem Based Learning (PBL) methodology applied to the subject Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Students have designed, evaluated and implemented, computing interactive systems to be used by humans. To perform it, students have used Tablet PCs that contribute to do important changes at the classroom, reducing some of the problems associated with the traditional models of education centred on the teacher. Taking into account the enormous penetration rate of devices having touch-sensitive interfaces (smart phones, tablet PCs, home automation systems, remote control, etc ...), and the big perspectives of growth in the short and medium term the development of interfaces by means of touch devices, the use of Tablet PC have let students develop transversal competences using PBL methodology. The study has been centred on the analysis of Virtual educational environments.

We describe a new system for building Tablet PC-based classroom software. The system, called SLICE, is built for extensibility, using a unique "explicit state" model. Applications developed thus far include presentation, classroom interaction, shared code review, and exam grading. The paper presents an overview of the system and describes these four applications. It then explains the extensibility model, showing how users can add new features.

Aside from the great progress in the field of humancomputer interaction, particularly in the last years the need for the development of adaptive user interfaces in several application areas has been recognized. Our research is concentrated on intelligent tutoring systems, a generation of computerized educational systems that attempt to mimic the capabilities of human tutor. In this paper we elaborate how the case of interface of Adaptive Knowledge Base Builder, intended for the development of an arbitrary domain knowledge base, can support the above reasoning. In order to specify its design and behaviour, User Action Notation is advocated as a suitable method.

Nowadays, the widespread adoption of the Bologna Process in Spanish universities, is demanding to put into practice innovative proposals. There is no doubt that methodologies must move from traditional style and concept-based teaching to student-centred and competency-based instruction. A novel approach to design interactive classroom environments supported by mobile Tablet PC technology is presented. It is focused on integrating formative assessment into classroom practices and providing students with immediate feedback. We describe the six steps of the proposed approach and how they are implemented in a first-year Computer Engineering course. Initial results have showed that the dropout rate in the experimental group has been reduced more than 50%, while the number of students passing the course has almost doubled over the control group. Our approach has also promoted the students' autonomy and motivation, thereby improving their academic performance and enhancing their selfconfidence in the learning process.

In comparison with the traditional learning, the computer support of collaborative teaching represents a combination of didactics and informatics approaches. This requires researchers to solve an additional design of specific edu-cational software and suitable ICT infrastructure. This contribution describes a continuous progress under the umbrella of the research on technology-enhanced learning; and how the ICT integration is modelled for the collaborative teaching and appropriated activities when using an in-house educational beta-software BIKE(E)/WPad. The practical experiences are demonstrated with some examples of how it is applied within the teaching bachelors students and from the related research on computer support from a teacher point of view.

As "hand-written notes" and "personal narrations" are the most natural tools to record, review, integrate and develop our own learning process, this article describes a collaborative learning and teaching environment integrating the use of Pen Tablets and multimedia technologies at the student/teacher level with the goal of achieving active learning for students in the classroom. An innovative hardware and software integration of the PCI NetSupport Manager Suite, TechSmith Camtasia Studio and Wacom Pen Tablets was implemented to provide both "teacher-centric" and "studentstudent collaborative" modes in this classroom. Students were also provided with dual graphics displays allowing the student to use one display for his or her personal workspace, while the second display could be used to view/share information with the instructor's desktop, or to share into other students work during collaborative sessions. This project was started in mid-August 2007 and assessment results are presented in this article for Fall 07 and the early part of Spring 08.

In order to develop an adaptive Web-based educational system that can offer some amount of adaptivity and intelligence, we enhance the operating capabilities of an authoring shell with adaptive and "Web-based" features.

The European project ELECTRA is concerned with the introduction of multimedia / telematics support to enhance the accessibility (local, regional and international) of learning material and to promote collaborative work. For the purpose of this paper we concentrate on two workpackages in the Limburg University Centre. The Interactive Multimedia Server workpackage focuses on the design of a generic platform for the integration of different types of information related to the learning process. Special attention is given to management, integration and accessibility of study material in an electronic environment. The other workpackage investigates the use of the interactive multimedia server in Medicine education.
