The Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia, UNAD, through instruments, the experiences in environmental management and their participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings were systematized. This article shows the implementation of sustainability within the institution, which was achieved through the Participatory Action methodology, which facilitates the integration of knowledge and actions to promote transformations in the thinking of the institutional community. In this way, they are articulated: objectives, strategy (ecological homes), research, technology and ICT as a method to establish relationships between the university, the State and the community. Innovation in the teaching of sustainable development in Europe: the case of ISLE Erasmus Network

Sustainable Development (SD) is one of the most widely used terms during the last years. It is a multi disciplinary concept, which applies mostly to life sciences but is not limited to them. Even though the short surve y conducted by the authors revealed that there are only a few case s of Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) around Eu rope that provide programs dedicated to SD, it is obvious tha t there is a constant raise in the need for impleme nting courses related to SD in existing programs. This paper disc usses the case study of I.S.L.E., an Erasmus Academ ic Network, which aims to use the existing knowledge and tools in the context of teaching sustainable development topics in Universities and HEIs around Europe as a basis, and elaborate further by introducing an innovative app roach towards the improvement of teaching SD in HEIs, based on the current needs as they are identified by the actio ns of the Network.

The environmental crisis of our time raises the need for higher education institutions (HEIs) to contribute to the sense of sustainability: sustainable development has gained wide ground in this regard, however, it is limited by different aspects. Sustainability implies a reformulation of the production and consumption models, and a transformation in the current structures, although many times this transformation represents a threat to the practices that have been perpetuated for several decades.

The paper analyses – with an aggregate method – the present demographic and higher education situation of the European Union, the consequences, which can be drawn, and the possible options. A sustainable society and higher education is functional, far-sighted, maintainable for generations, flexible and wise enough to do not destroy its physical, environmental or social service systems. Looking at demographics is perhaps one of the best ways to analyse the sustainability of these systems, because the actual size of education is in strong connection with society. In the case of higher education these topics are relevant because, putting aside the theory of lifelong learning, a well-functioning education system still need youngsters, students. If demographic policy is successful, the effects will only be felt after one generation, and at least twice as many time is required for maintaining the present higher education system. The most pressing and urgent question is bridging the next two or three decades.

"Higher education is uniquely placed to play a leading role in the attainment of sustainable development. This catalyst potential needs grounding, however, in a context where universities and colleges are currently seen as contributing to the sustainability crisis. Sustainability challenges the current paradigms, structures as well as predominant practices in higher education: this is a consistent message found throughout the literature. Universities and colleges are facing this reality as they seek to meaningfully contribute to sustainability. The paper argues that this requires going beyond the integration of key ideas in existing curriculum; the commissioning of a new sustainable building or supporting the sustainability action projects which often occur in the fringes of the institution. Instead, the sustainability journey engages universities and colleges in a quest for interdisciplinarity, participatory pedagogies, ‘real world ‘ research and the opening of institutional boundaries so that the notion of sustainable communities is extended beyond university and college walls. The paper proposes that a systemic or connected view of sustainability across institutions is required to transform the educational experience of students and lead social change for sustainability. Through mapping the international declarations and frameworks for higher education, this paper confirms the, in principle, commitment of universities and colleges to transform the higher education experience towards sustainability. The paper then contrasts these public intentions with a review of global and regional progress in the areas of leadership and strategy; modeling practice; education and learning; partnerships and outreach for sustainability in higher education. It suggests that achievements have been random and mostly disconnected from the core business of higher education. The paper concludes that if the higher education sector is to be transformative, it needs to transform itself. This will be a lengthy and ambitious process which will require strong leadership."

Higher education institution's (HEIs) sustainability develop a mindset that promotes the SDGs' guiding principles. ABC strategy is adopted for sustainability. The majority of sustainable development policy is developed at the faculty and university levels. Two types of sustainability exist, namely, internal sustainability and external sustainability at the university. Integration of competencies in sustainable development takes place at three levelsvertically, horizontally or through a combination of both. Interdisciplinary research is necessary in the various domains of knowledge in order to properly execute and adopt the SDGs. The challenges for sustainability are lack of guidelines for identifying and training ESD and lack of standards for evaluating ESD proficiency among others. Thus, it is now widely understood that higher education can hasten the shift to a well-grounded present and future.

This article is dedicated to the analysis of the interconnection between higher education and sustainable development. Key roles performed by higher education institutions regarding sustainability issues are highlighted. Modern trends in education for sustainable development are singled out, and key features of different countries’ approaches to the issue (and Ukraine in particular) are studied. New types of learning which emerge within education for sustainable development, together with key elements of sustainability competence, are outlined. Essential university functions and capabilities for inoculation and adoption of the principles of sustainable development in wider society are summed up.

At the bottom lines : student initiatives for sustainable development in higher education

During the past few years, numerous student initiatives have been founded, which engage in Sustainable Development (SD) at their university and beyond. Working in such initiatives offers students a remarkable (sometimes self-organized) environment allowing them to generate key competencies beyond the regular curricula. Beside this learning spaces for the individual student, the initiatives contribute to an organizational implementation of SD at the universities itself. With the description of a self-organized lecture-series of the AG Nachhaltigkeit Erfurt e.V., a good-practice example for the initiatives' achievements is given. The potential of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education becomes tangible, especially in innovative forms of teaching and learning, like informal learning. Furthermore, a study of the Cultura 21 e.V. and the "Initiative für Nachhaltigkeit" (Initiative for Sustainability) of the University of Duisburg-Essen (Brocchi 2007) is presented, where systematic data of existing initiatives were collected and analyzed. The study and experience from collaboration with several initiatives reveal a high diversity of interpretations of ESD.

Higher Education Institutions among all educational structures are vested with significant responsibility in implementing the concept of Sustainable Development, both to incorporate this concept within their activities (teaching, research, operations) and to widespread Sustainable Development in the society and business world. The report has been elaborated within the ISLE project (Innovation in the teaching of Sustainable Development in Life Sciences in Europe), an Erasmus Network composed by 39 partners from 30 European countries representing Higher Education Institutions, Research institutes and Enterprises that have a focus in the life sciences. The objective of the Compendium is the identification and diffusion of Good Practices concerned with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Higher Education Institutions. The topic is analysed in a broader sense, on one side considering the characterisation of the political and institutional framework, and on the other side describing formal and informal learning experiences in Higher Education Institutions. 36 Good Practices are discussed and presented in systematic forms, that have been categorized according to the following topics related to the implementation of Sustainable Development education: policies, institutional activities, teaching and practical experiences. The Good Practices represent a wide range of situations concerning different European countries, institutions, typologies of the initiatives, geographical levels of implementation. However in this diversity some characterizing aspects emerge: the holistic and interdisciplinary approaches to ESD, the attention in achieving tangible results, the involvement of local communities and the bottom-up approaches, the importance of partnerships and networking, the capacity building, the innovation of the initiatives, and the attention in building a framework favorable to Sustainable Development.

During the past few years, numerous student initiatives have been founded, which engage in Sustainable Development (SD) at their university and beyond. Working in such initiatives offers students a remarkable (sometimes self-organized) environment allowing them to generate key competencies beyond the regular curricula. Beside this learning spaces for the individual student, the initiatives contribute to an organizational implementation of SD at the universities itself. With the description of a self-organized lecture-series of the AG Nachhaltigkeit Erfurt e.V., a good-practice example for the initiatives' achievements is given.

Sustainability is an urgent developmental task for our society, and is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, also Higher education institutions (HEIs) are called upon to deal theoretically, conceptually, methodically, critically, and reflectively with the associated challenges and the processes and conditions of transformation in order to contribute to sustainable development. How can complex organisations such as HEIs succeed in initiating and maintaining the process of sustainable development within their own institutions, and make it a permanent responsibility? How can as many protagonists as possible be persuaded to get involved in sustainable development? This book deals with the promotion of sustainable university development and provides an overview of how universities can be organised sustainably and how sustainable development can be implemented in their various functional areas. In the sense of a “whole-institution approach”, which encompasses entire HEIs, the focus is not only on the core areas of teaching (higher education for sustainable development) and research (sustainability in research), but also on the operational management of HEIs. In addition, this book focuses on sustainability governance and transfer for sustainable development at HEIs as cross-disciplinary issues.
