Database development has mainly be considered as development of database structuring. Functionality and interactivity specification has been neglected in the past. The derivability of functionality has been a reason for this restriction of the database design approach. At the same time, applications and the required functionality became more complex. Functionality specification may be based on workflow engines. Interaction support is often not specified but hidden within the interfaces. It may, however, be specified through the story space and the supporting media type suite. Distributed applications are based on an explicit specification of import/export views, on services provided and on exchange frames. The integration of all these parts has not yet been performed. The co-design approach aims in bridging all these different aspects of applications and provides additionally a sound methodology for development of all these aspects.

Modern business information systems need to support the co-ordination of people and existing software tools in addressing &organisational goals. This must be done in an adaptable manner to cope with the inevitable changes of organisational goals, and in the ways of achieving them. An explicit co-ordination layer in a systems architecture embodies this notion of loose integration. It provides a component which models the current state of organisational processes, and manages the interaction between other components. This provides integration on an as-needed basis and encourages the co-evolution of the organisation and its information systems. Abstract The paper outlines a theoretical framework for the conceptualisation and design of collaborative systems for design organisations. The intent is to examine and support the idea of'co-purposing'as an influential design metaphor for the analysis of design teams and the development of design support collaborative systems in contexts where systems' designers collaborate with their clients.

Design Metaphors and Co-Design Scenarios are discussed as important tools for a Co-Design approach for IS. The advantages of an electronic assistant metaphor are indicated. Research is based on a number of case studies exemplified with the EU fifth framework project Avanti.

Functional integration is a new trend in corporate organization. By changing the balance between functional differentiation and integration, functional integration gives up some supposed economies of scale and benefits from division of labour in order to increase the degree of interaction and task-sharing between diverse functions. The aim is to achieve faster response to threats and opportunities in the persistent turbulent business environment of today. The exact location of the new functional boundaries and inter dependencies differs from industry to industry; in some cases external integration, say with customers or suppliers, may be justifiable. Advantage can be taken from new forms of organization such as flatter hierarchies, the building of interfunctional teams, and the adoption of new design and manufacturing control technologies.The paper gives examples of functional integration and discusses implications and problems generated by its adoption. Some of the implications may eventually induce radical rethinks on a whole range of presuppositions about corporate structure, relationships between the firm and its suppliers and customers, the role of management, industrial relations and the socio-cultural impact of increasing reliance on automated information systems.

Co-creation offers firms and their network of actors significant opportunities for innovation, as each actor offers access to new resources through a process of resource integration. However, despite the significant advantages that co-creation can offer, there is surprisingly little research providing a strategic approach for identifying the most advantageous co-creation opportunities, especially when many possible options are available. Recently, scholars have called for research that develops tools and processes related to co-creation. This study addresses these priorities, making two contributions. First, in contrast to previous work considering co-creation more generally, or focusing on one specific form only, e.g. co-production, this paper offers a detailed and granular approach to co-creation design. A co-creation design framework is developed, which incorporates multiple design dimensions and categories that can reveal new co-creation opportunities. Second, the research extends the application of a design approach, specifically within the context of co-creative activities. The authors use field-based research with senior executives to develop a framework that includes key co-creation design elements. A morphological approach is used to explore how a lead firm can identify attractive co-creation opportunities. An innovation solution in one organization provides an illustration of how the co-creation design framework can be applied.

The paper explores possibilities for situating IT design and development work within the context of use so as to support the co-realisation of technology and 'design in use'. The aim is to build a new understanding between IT professionals and users which is grounded upon what happens as the latter grapple with the problems of applying IT, appropriating its functionalities and affordances into their work practices and relations. Following a discussion of participatory design and ethnomethodology, a novel method called co-realisation, which aims to provide a synthesis of the preceding methods, is suggested as an alternative. Through a discussion of findings from a case study of IT systems design and development in healthcare we show how the co-realisation approach might provide work-affording systems and how user-designer relations might be reformulated.
