Abstract

Due to urbanization, increased automobile growth, and lack of attention by drivers as well as pedestrians to the traffic regulations, traffic collisions affecting pedestrians, which have now become a serious safety issue in many developed nations such as India. The established road design does not have sufficient pedestrian facilities and thus there is a constant dispute between automobiles and pedestrians over sharing the limited space on a road. This often contributes to a dangerous situation and overcrowded traffic conditions for the slow speed vehicles and pedestrians. Although adequate control systems including signals are given at unregulated crossings, but still most of the pedestrians do not use the signals and tend to avoid pedestrian crossing areas that adversely impact the characteristics of the flow of traffic and the movement of road users. The objective of this research is to bring out the factors related to pedestrian accidents, characteristics of pedestrian behaviors...

AI

What factors contribute to the high pedestrian accident rates globally?add

Globally, pedestrians account for 22% of all traffic fatalities, with 1.32 million deaths annually. Major causes include high vehicular speeds, alcohol consumption by drivers, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure.

How do pedestrian crossing behaviors vary among individuals and groups?add

The study identifies three behaviors: Leave/Quit and Go (LaG), Join/Meet and Go (JaG), and Wait/Stay and Go (WaG). These behaviors reveal that while group dynamics influence crossings, individual concerns for traffic safety remain significant.

What is the safe system approach in pedestrian traffic safety?add

The safe system approach integrates factors affecting pedestrians, vehicles, and road infrastructure to enhance road safety. Its elements include human fault detection, system accountability, and social standards to minimize accidents.

How do technological innovations impact pedestrian safety in urban environments?add

Technologies like Autonomous Emergency Braking and Intelligent Speed Assistance can significantly reduce pedestrian collision risks by enhancing vehicle response to potential accidents. Adoption of these systems is crucial for improving pedestrian safety in rapidly urbanizing areas.

What limitations exist in current road designs affecting pedestrian safety?add

Current road infrastructures often lack dedicated pedestrian lanes and crossings, leading to increased risks for pedestrians. In many developing nations, mixed-use road spaces further complicate safe pedestrian navigation, contributing to higher accident rates.
