This paper explored the competition of 4 cities (Fullerton, Los Angeles, Burbank, and Palos Verdes) to host the University of California Southern Branch, which ultimately became UCLA. Relying on newspaper articles, I argued that the bidding process was an attempt by the City of Fullerton to establish itself as "The Education Community," and that the history of UCLA's establishment has been oversimplified and mischaracterized as inevitable.

This article chronicles the strategies and efforts Chicana/o and Latina/o student activists employed in the demand and creation of the César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education (CECCHE) at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) between 1990 and 1995. We situate the center's establishment as the result of student activism. CPP served as a stage whereon students resisted negative campus racial climate by institutionalizing the CECCHE as a counterspace. Student activism at CPP reflected broader resistance efforts in California in the 1990s. The student leaders, like activists from California's social movements, resisted conservative rhetoric and systemic racism by mobilizing cross-racial coalitions and enacting public protest. Using critical race history, we analyze ten oral histories of students, faculty, and administrators involved in the establishment of CPP's first Chicana/o and Latina/o cultural center. We situate the formation of the CECCHE as an example of student of color commitment to antiracist activism in higher education.

John Dizikes first saw UC Santa Cruz when it was still rolling hills and the buildings were only artist’s renderings. He agreed to stake his career on this new, untried campus because he understood the vision of UCSC as a place where higher education would be reformed and teaching would be a priority—and he followed through on the gamble, coming here as one of UCSC’s founding faculty in 1965. In his ensuing thirty-five-year career at UC Santa Cruz, he was a professor of history, a professor and co-founder of the American Studies Department, a provost of Cowell College and chair of the Council of Provosts, and throughout and above it all a dedicated educator and an ongoing student. This oral history was conducted in 2011 by Cowell alum Cameron Vanderscoff for the Regional History Project.

In November, Californians will elect a new governor who will guide the state into the next millenium. Education has been a topic of interest during this year's gubernatorial election. The 1998-1999 budget includes significant funding increases for Higher Education. This increase represents a step in the right direction, but this is an unusual year in that California had a 4 billion-dollar surplus at the end of the 1997-1998 budget. Over the past decade, Higher Education has steadily decreased as a portion of the general fund from 15% in 1988-1989 to 13% in 1998-1999.(i) If Higher Education still held a 15% share of the general fund as it was a decade ago, its budget would be $1.2 billion higher. While the need for a more specialized workforce is increasing, California has watched enrollment in its universities decrease.
