Browsing and Visualizing Digital Bibliographic Data

Existing citation indexes of scientific literature, like Scopus, WOS, Google Scholar and OpenAire, collect metadata of papers and authors. By using appropriate queries, it is possible to access these metadata, find specific papers and all associated details, as well as retrieve indices, metrics and information about authors. However, a big issue is that they generally do not aggregate the results of subsequent searches and do not offer explicit representations of author/citation relationships between found items. This paper introduces VisualBib, a Web application prototype conceived to support researchers who wish to create, modify, visualize and share bibliographies. Starting with a small set of papers or with a restricted number of authors, it generates, in real-time, an interactive visual representation of the corresponding bibliography; the user can explore the network of cited/citing references and dynamically add new papers in order to build up customized bibliographies which are represented using holistic, aggregated and graphical views.

The amount of information provided by peer-reviewed scientific literature citation indexes such as Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), CrossRef and OpenCitations is huge: it offers users a lot of metadata about publications, such as the list of papers written by a specific author, the editorial and content details of a paper, the list of references and citations. But, for a researcher it could also be interesting to: extract these data in real time in order to create bibliographies, for example, by starting with a small set of significant papers or a restricted number of authors, progressively enriching them by exploring cited/citing references; dispose them in a graphical and aggregate representation; be able to easily share them with other interested researchers.

The Brazilian scientific community has available a curricular information system called Lattes. The analysis in the area of scientific production is rapidly evolving as we have an increase in the number of publications combined with increasingly interdisciplinary sources of information. There is a demand to carry out the search and retrieval of information from the Lattes curriculum in order to reduce the difficulties in exploring bibliometric data and to aid in the analysis of this information. The article analyzes the major changes of the display systems of bibliographic data occurred over the past 20 years. The catalogue is examined as a communication tool in relation with the new technologies that allow its understanding and use. The online catalogues accessible offsite, outside the library, have changed with the evolution of technology and of Web. They stay beside and together with other kind of contents attainable through the library, while libraries are testing the centralization of access. New actors and cataloguing tradition are experiencing new communication systems, the librarianship is choosing if stay outside or inside this process. Researchers are daily engaged in bibliographic tasks concerning literature search and review, both in the role of authors of scientific papers and when they are reviewers or evaluators. Current indexing platforms offer powerful tools for searching bibliographic references, but in general they poorly support the integration, visualization and comparative analysis of metadata coming from subsequent searches. To address these issues, we designed and realized VisualBib (va) , an online analytics solution, where a visual environment includes analysis control, bibliography exploration, automatic metadata extraction and metrics visualization for real-time scenarios. Starting from an analysis of tasks, associating them to different user roles, this study enabled us to define a taxonomy of tasks, strictly linked to a set of system requirements for our platform. We introduce and discuss here some relevant functions through two usage scenarios related to the creation and the review of a bibliography. The maturity of the system implementation has allowed us to propose a set of evaluation activities, both carried out by two groups of users with different levels of experience in managing bibliographies, and to collect detailed results based on specific tasks and on general aspects of our framework. VisualBib (va) proved an effective and efficient system for the authoring and reviewing processes of a bibliography.

This article presents a description and case study of CiteSpace II, a Java application which supports visual exploration with knowledge discovery in bibliographic databases. Highly cited and pivotal documents, areas of specialization within a knowledge domain, and emergence of research topics are visually mapped through a progressive knowledge domain visualization approach to detecting and visualizing trends and patterns in scientific literature. The test case in this study is progressive knowledge domain visualization of the field of medical informatics. Datasets based on publications from twelve journals in the medical informatics field covering the time period from 1964-2004 were extracted from PubMed and Web of Science (WOS) and developed as testbeds for evaluation of the CiteSpace system. Two resulting document-term co-citation and MeSH term cooccurrence visualizations are qualitatively evaluated for identification of pivotal documents, areas of specialization, and research trends.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the different functions and features of the multilingual AVOBMAT (Analysis and Visualization of Bibliographic Metadata and Texts) data-driven digital tool. This new web application enables digital humanists to critically analyse the bibliographic data and texts of large corpora including entire library repositories and digital collections at scale. The implemented state-of-the-art text analytical and visualization tools such as topic modeling and network analysis provide interactive close and distant reading of texts and bibliographic data. The export functions of AVOBMAT facilitate the reproducibility of the results and transparency of the preprocessing and text analysis
