Nanoelectronics and nanotechnologies are presented as critical fields that leverage the ongoing trend of miniaturization in semiconductor devices, with an emphasis on their significant impact on future economic growth across various sectors including materials, medicine, and information technology. The limitations of current CMOS technology necessitate exploring alternatives to extend information technology capabilities. The paper delineates three primary research directions—More of Moore, More than Moore, and Beyond Moore—highlighting potential breakthroughs from diverse domains such as information carriers, materials, structures, and fabrication methods. A call for collaborative, multidisciplinary research is made to develop predictive simulation tools and methodologies that can pave the way for fault-tolerant, heterogeneous nano-devices, ensuring the economic viability of future nano-electronic systems.
