Signage systems, as part of environmental graphic design of the cities, are almost exclusively conceived as informative tools under the visual domain. Although their participation to the overcrowded landscape of signs populating our urban landscapes is not underestimated, their possible contribute to the generation of atmospheres is undervalued. Pursuing a shift from the semiotic to an aesthetic interpretation, the paper propose an investigation on elements and strategies of signage systems as generators of atmospheres of the city. The design of information and orientation systems should not only be limited to the graphic design domain, but should also address other architectonical and perceptive issues, taking care of the relationship between signs supported by physical elements and their presence in the city. This approach permits more profound and satisfying aesthetic experiences other than indicate more conscious movements into the urban fabric while giving information about places to citizens and visitors.
