The analysis of signs in cities is known as research into ‘linguistic landscapes’. Following Jaworski and Thurlow (2010), this paper focuses on ‘semiotic’ not linguistic landscapes. I argue that visual images and visual aspects of writing such as font or colour are essential for the meanings conveyed on signs. As an example, I examine the semiotic landscape of parts of Prenzlauer Berg, a neighbourhood of the former East Berlin. Neglected in the 1980s, after reunification, this originally working class area became middle-class and trendy, popular for its shops, cafes and arts culture. Using multimodal and ethnographic methods, my paper reveals the important role commercial signs and street art play in the discursive re-construction of this gentrified neighbourhood. Both contribute to the area’s commercialization and aestheticization. My paper also illustrates how semiotic landscapes contribute to place-making and the commodification of urban spaces. The combination of multimodal analysis with interviews with sign authors allowed for insights into the reasons specific semiotic choices were made, adding to our understanding of discourse production by revealing intended meanings which were not identifiable based on text analysis alone.

This paper explores the relationship between graphic objects and urban environments by adopting a critical stance towards the notion of image in the image of the city. It challenges the emphasis on image as a multi sensory mental construct by revealing it to have different meanings in diverse disciplinary contexts. In exposing how a miscellaneous range of objects cited in the literature lacks cohesion and sense of function, the urban graphic object is introduced and illustrated as a pervasive epistemic phenomenon. Understanding urban graphic objects expands established ideas about legibility and how urban objects have intended and unintended graphic properties. Through considering the function of graphic communication within the function of cities and urban places, the paper introduces a framework for considering graphic design as urban design and graphic objects as urban objects.

A b s t r a c t Perception, awareness and appreciation of the built environment are essential skills in urban representation and design. Among the different perceptual dimensions, the visual, or more precisely the visual-aesthetic dimension is the field that better expresses its potential in representation. The study, in an analytical-applicative perspective, addresses the reading of the relationship between forms and uses, symbols and meanings of an urban public space characterized by a recent transformation. The architectural stratifications and practices of use lead to the definition of space, in its tangible and intangible components. In this regard the analysis of the historical drifts, traced back through images and drawings, help us to make visible the mutations and the processes helpful to understand and describe its actual order. Most conducted studies about urban development in architecture, urbanism and environmental graphics areas indicate that urban furnishing is one the effective factors of urban landscape, Graphic and environmental signs and structures have an effective role in inducing identifying and strengthening the sense of place, and man can realize the identity and existence of space unconsciously. If the environment has the right design, it will make us calm and cause prosperous creativity and positive moves that ultimately lead to progress. Providing the clarity, readability, and clear image of the environment gives the person a sense of security. The aim to have a clear picture of the environment is that one can easily recognize the components of the environment and connect them in their minds in an interconnected form. The irregularity of a series of elements that lacks aesthetic values has created visual distortion for the citizens. One of these cases is the store's signage, which leads to overcrowding due to irregularities, and completely violates the main purpose of the urban design which is creating visual comfort. The study conducted on paying attention to the importance of urban furnishing and designing store's signage and its role in urban landscape. It was a practical study with laboratory and survey method. The findings indicated that along with abundant issues of urban furnishing, paying attention to designing store signs has an important role in improving urban landscape.

Cities competing for tourist dollars strive for distinctiveness in an increasingly globalised world, a distinctiveness that is frequently achieved through the making of new urban icons. These icons are designed as symbols of success and wealth and can be visual, tangible, and imaginary or real in a climate where publicity and perception play an even more crucial role in the marketing of cities. The value of architecture is no longer appraised merely as a formal object but by its ability to elicit relevant transformations. For both the general public and students of architecture, it is often the photographic media that acts as a mediator between the idea and the reality of iconic architecture. This paper explores the 'iconic' in the built environment and then reflects on the experiences of forty postgraduate architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture students from New Zealand as they visit iconic architecture and landscapes in three iconic European cities. Students were asked to identify iconic architecture and landscapes, followed by close analysis and documentation of the essential qualities which established their pre-eminence. A subsequent visit to each of the places studied provided the opportunity to test the importance of authentic context and the realities and fictions of the icons themselves.

In our modern world, cities are growing and consequently, the complexities of the buildings are increasing day by day. The main problem in our cities is the lack of communication between the citizens and therefore rising "individualism". Especially foreigners coming from small regions, speaking different languages, cannot easily adapt to the social life of the city and they cannot develop their life skills for urban areas. It is not easy for foreign people to walk around in the city streets and building complexes. They need effective guidance. There is a need for effective and useful building information systems. The main topic of this paper is the new subject "Environmental Graphic Design". By using graphic design elements; typography, pictograms, photographs, and illustrations the storytelling places can be designed. In this paper, firstly environmental graphic design will be described by searching the awarded projects from all over the world and then the practices in Cyprus will be analyzed by comparing their past and present. Lastly the case study with the students of Architecture Faculty of one private university in Cyprus will be reported and in this manner, the importance of graphic design in architectural environments will be emphasized. Due to the affective relationship that citizens and communities develop with the places they inhabit, representations of a city have historically served as a vehicle to suggest interpretations. With this assumption, the experimentation conducted with the students in the undergraduate Industrial Design course at the Sapienza University of Rome was established with the conviction that to enhance a city, its culture, and its heritage, it is still necessary to find appropriate forms that can gather identities and diversity, individual experience, and community knowledge. Experimentation in representation/communication aims to promote quality tourism through an integrated system of products—a brief video (before), an application for mobile devices (during), and a game/memory/guide box (after)—to accompany travellers, who are no longer tourists, for the entire duration of their visit to the city.
