Welcome to the proceedings of the 2005 IFIP International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing (EUC 2005), which was held in Nagasaki, Japan, December 6-9, 2005. Embedded and ubiquitous computing is emerging rapidly as an exciting new paradigm to provide computing and communication services all the time, everywhere. Its systems are now pervading every aspect of life to the point that they are hidden inside various appliances or can be worn unobtrusively as part of clothing and jewelry. This emergence is a natural outcome of research and technological advances in embedded systems, pervasive computing and communications, wireless networks, mobile computing, distributed computing and agent technologies, etc. Its tremendous impact on academics, industry, government, and daily life can be compared to that of electric motors over the past century, in fact it but promises to revolutionize life much more profoundly than elevators, electric motors or even personal computers.

Pervasive computing is a new dimension of personal computing that integrates mobile communication, ubiquitous embedded computer system, consumer electronics and power of Internet. It is a rapidly developing area of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The term refers to the increasing integration of ICT into people's lives and e nvironments, made possible by the growing availability of microprocessors with inbuilt communications facilities. Pervasive computing has many potential applications, from health and home care to environmental monitoring and intelligent transport systems.

Modern research emphasizes Pervasive Computing change faces, learning cultures, structures, communications, intellectual properties, information securities, data presentations and web displays to make attraction for human interaction. Pervasive systems have a broad range of applications but it is relatively challenging for pervasive applications to meet emergence into existing physical environment and newly built structure requirements. Due to their interaction to gather information and change the environment via activating devices independently is highlighted. Security of the pervasive devices and applications which control our activities has primary importance and will be destroyed, if the pervasive system operations are not secure. There is a need to improve the security measures for data to travel rapidly, unbroken, unchanged and invisible by deceptive recipients. Pervasive Computing allows users to get information and services access anytime and anywhere but need to discuss issues and solutions to deliver secure information with privacy and trust. Possible solutions for these challenges of Pervasive Computing interaction between human are emphasized. A collection of papers and articles have been collected in order to investigate the previous study of Pervasive Computing interaction and its challenges. Is it possible for us to understand what the scientific world will be close to generate new avenues? Expectations of future bring new openings for user interaction with systems, data, information and the environments in which they live, work and play.

This exstended abstract presents an asymmetric and programmable (extensible) approach to pervasive computing. The idea is to off-load computations from light portable clients into a backbone of seamlessly integrated servers. This way, a user can extend and personalize his pervasive computational environment by installing computations following his trajectory throughout the day. Focus on this extended abstract is on structural issues related to the back-end servers running mobile code off-loaded from the mobile user.

As mobile and embedded computing devices become more pervasive, it is becoming obvious that the nature of interactions between users and computers must evolve. Applications need to become increasingly autonomous and invisible, by placing greater reliance on knowledge of context and reducing interactions with users. Moreover, applications must cope with highly dynamic environments in which resources, such as network connectivity and software services, frequently vary over time. This paper presents our vision of pervasive computing and enumerates the software engineering challenges involved in realizing this vision. It also evaluates the current state of research and presents an agenda for future investigations in pervasive computing.

Following mainframe computing and desktop computing, ubiquitous computing seems to be the next future computing paradigm, characterized by unprecedented degrees of real-world embedment and connectivity. It means "everywhere, anytime computing". We will move from direct interaction with just a few computers to direct or remote interaction with hundreds or thousands of computing devices and services.

The paradigm of pervasive computing describes ubiquitous computing environments that provide anytime and anywhere access to information services while making the presence of the system invisible to the user. Pervasive computing envisioned by Mark Weiser emerged at the conjunction of research and development in a number of areas which include embedded and devices and systems, wireless communications, and distributed, mobile and context-aware computing. This paper provides an overview of constituent components of pervasive computing and outlines the current progress made as a result of convergence of these areas of research.

Pervasive Computing is a very challenging and complex domain that still lacks a comprehensive unified architecture. In this paper, we propose a reference architecture for pervasive computing that captures most, if not all, of the key challenges and provides a new architecture model that can be used in almost any business context. It provides conceptual views for the smart environment (SE), the smart object (SO), and the pervasive system (PS). We evaluated the model using a simulation prototype to predict its reliability at runtime.
