A tussle analysis for information-centric networking architectures

There have been many recent papers on data-oriented or content-centric network architectures. Despite the voluminous literature, surprisingly little clarity is emerging as most papers focus on what differentiates them from other proposals. We begin this paper by identifying the existing commonalities and important differences in these designs, and then discuss some remaining research issues. After our review, we emerge skeptical (but open-minded) about the value of this approach to networking.

This memo describes research challenges for Information-Centric Networking (ICN), an approach to evolve the Internet infrastructure to directly support information distribution by introducing uniquely named data as a core Internet principle. Data becomes independent from location, application, storage, and means of transportation, enabling or enhancing a number of desirable features, such as security, user mobility, multicast, and in-network caching. Mechanisms for realizing these benefits is the subject of ongoing research in the IRTF and elsewhere. This document describes current research challenges in ICN, including naming, security, routing, system scalability, mobility management, wireless networking, transport services, in-network caching, and network management.

nformation-centric networking (ICN) is a relatively new research area that is motivated by significant changes witnessed in the industry regarding applications and services, as well as customer practice and expectations. Indeed, the vast majority of network traffic today (both Internet and intranet) consists of content dissemination, information that is addressed to more than one recipient. This includes not only content created explicitly for public dissemination (e.g., by large organizations such as news agencies, movie studios, and meteorological offices), but also content dissemination between restricted groups of recipients and, increasingly, content generated by end users.

The Information-Centric Network (ICN) paradigm has gained popularity since its inception. The host-based IP networks were not primarily designed to handle scenarios that it is exposed to on the current Internet. In that direction lot of research has been happening to develop applications such as web applications, multimedia streaming, the Internet of Things, Wireless Sensor Networks and Vehicular networks. In addition, new ICN application areas, such as social networks, Industrial IoTs, etc., are emerging. This review investigates the possible application areas and their deficiencies evenly, broadly and at a certain level of depth with focus on security, scalability, IP interoperability, modularity and other application specific aspects. We discuss the current state-of-the-art in these ICN-based applications and the existing limitations. A comparative analysis of the literary works available is performed to understand the research gaps available, and a detailed discussion of the challenges in each area is provided. We conclude the review with future challenges in the application development with the ICN paradigm to reap its architectural benefits. This report documents the presentations and discussions of the 3rd Dagstuhl seminar on Information-Centric Networks. This seminar was focused on the deployment and scalability of ICNs. An overview of various ICN projects was used as a starting point for discussions. Participants provided a set of starting questions to cover with the rest of the group. The seminar increased the awareness on the state of the art in ICN research. Various topics on deployment and scalability were discussed. The opinions and comments presented here came directly from the notes taken at the seminar. is a new approach to networking contents rather than devices that hold the contents. It has recently attracted much attention of network research and standardization communities.

In an information-centric network, data objects have a cen-tral role. They are located based on their name, and accessed regardless of their location. The new paradigm helps overcome the limitations of the host-centric model, thereby offering a wide range of applications. How-ever, the Information-Centric Networking concept solicits decent tech-niques and architectures. In this paper, we propose an architectural de-sign for Information-Centric Networking. Our work is expected to con-tribute towards the overall development of the research area.

—This study presents a vast coverage of current Information-Centric Network (ICN) submission by evaluating eight distinct and popular routing and name resolution approaches. Internet build-up and initial deposition were based on a host-driven approach. With the increasing demands for media-driven data flooding the cost of the Internet, a new semantic and paradigm shift was envisioned known as ICN. Information-Centrism is an approach that partly dissociates the host dependencies by referring to contents by unique identifiers called name. However, to benefit from the content network, forwarding, naming and routing, among other issues are still in its developmental stages. The taxonomy serves as a basis for research directions, challenges, implementation and future studies for standardizing the ICN routing and naming. Routing and Name Resolution were themed in categories of strategies, contributions, issues and drawbacks. The major findings of this paper are providing a classification and review of the data routing and name resolutions approaches that are proposed on eight ICN architectures; presenting drawback areas in the selected architectures; and finally highlighting some challenges of ICN routing for the ICN research community vending.

Can the Internet be redesigned to reduce future conflicts? The Internet's underlying architecture, Internet Protocol (IP), was introduced in 1974. Since then many ideas have been put forward about how to update and improve it. One branch of these is called "Information-Centric Networking" (ICN). Trossen and Kostopoulos note how ICN could improve the ability of the Internet to resolve conflicts between the various constellations of stakeholder interests, conflicts that they call "tussles." Introducing a "tussle taxonomy," they provide examples of how tussles might be resolved differently in ICN. They believe the ICN model would help rationalize pricing in a three-sided market; reduce congestion and transit costs; provide more transparency; offer more choices and possible outcomes with respect to issues such as privacy, intellectual property, and data protection; and better enable not just present but future business models that actors within the system might strive to establish.
