Abstract
This report documents the presentations and discussions of the 3rd Dagstuhl seminar on Information-Centric Networks. This seminar was focused on the deployment and scalability of ICNs. An overview of various ICN projects was used as a starting point for discussions. Participants provided a set of starting questions to cover with the rest of the group. The seminar increased the awareness on the state of the art in ICN research. Various topics on deployment and scalability were discussed. The opinions and comments presented here came directly from the notes taken at the seminar. Information Centric Networking (ICN) is a new paradigm where network communications are accomplished by requesting named content, instead of sending packets to destination addresses. Named Data Networking (NDN) and Content-Centric Networking (CCN) are two prominent ICN architectures. This document provides an overview of the terminology and definitions that have been used in describing concepts in these two projects. While there are other ICN architectures, they are not part of the NDN and CCN vision and as such are out of scope for this document. Status of This Memo This Internet-Draft is submitted in full conformance with the provisions of BCP 78 and BCP 79. Internet-Drafts are working documents of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Note that other groups may also distribute working documents as Internet-Drafts.

Zusammenfassung From December 5th to 8th 2010, the Dagstuhl Seminar 10492 on “Information-Centric Networking” was held in Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz Center for Informatics. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the seminar topics and goals in general. Links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided, if available.

There have been many recent papers on data-oriented or content-centric network architectures. Despite the voluminous literature, surprisingly little clarity is emerging as most papers focus on what differentiates them from other proposals. We begin this paper by identifying the existing commonalities and important differences in these designs, and then discuss some remaining research issues. After our review, we emerge skeptical (but open-minded) about the value of this approach to networking.
The proliferation of user-generated content available over the Internet and the growing need for disassociation of the content from its location has introduced a new aspect for the design of the Future Internet: the transition from a host-centric to an information-centric network paradigm. However, information-centric network is still a very young research area and, as such, there are a number of weaknesses in existing designs. This paper presents its main design issues and establishes some principles and approaches that could allow an easier and faster migration for the information-centric networking paradigm.

This document is a product of the Information-Centric Networking Research Group (ICNRG).
This memo describes research challenges for Information-Centric Networking. Information-Centric Networking is an approach to evolve the Internet infrastructure to directly support information distribution by introducing uniquely named data as a core Internet principle. Data becomes independent from location, application, storage, and means of transportation, enabling in-network caching and replication. Challenges include naming, security, routing, system scalability, mobility management, wireless networking, transport services, in-network caching, and network management.

This document presents a number of considerations regarding evaluating Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and sheds some light on the impact of ICN on network security. It also surveys the evaluation tools currently available to researchers in the ICN area and provides suggestions regarding methodology and metrics.
