Outline

Anaphors in English and the scope of binding theory

1992

Abstract

Since the pioneering work of Lees and Klima (1963), it has commonly been assumed that a single generalization determines the possible antecedents of anaphors (reflexive and reciprocal expressions) in English.

What explains the binding differences between standard and picture noun reflexives?add

The research reveals that picture noun reflexives are exempt from grammatical constraints unlike standard reflexives, leading to different binding behaviors in examples with varying antecedent structures.

How does the concept of obliqueness affect anaphor binding?add

This study proposes that Principle A should be reformulated in terms of relative obliqueness, predicting that anaphors must coindex with less oblique coarguments in a given structure.

What novel insights does the paper provide regarding exempt anaphors?add

The findings indicate that exempt anaphors can bind across larger discourse contexts, defying traditional binding theory, and contingent upon both syntactic structure and processing-based factors.

How do discourse notions influence anaphor interpretation in English?add

The investigation finds that the perspective or viewpoint of the discourse significantly affects how anaphors like picture nouns select their antecedents, highlighting a nuanced interaction with context.

When can split antecedents occur with anaphors, according to the study?add

The paper identifies that split antecedents can occur with exempt anaphors in certain contexts, challenging previous theories that confined antecedence to local coarguments only.
