Abstract
Este artículo analiza la perspectiva de Brilliana Harley, conocida como Mrs. Alex Tweedie, sobre Oaxaca, basada en su libro de viajes México tal como lo vi (1901). Tweedie, una escritora y fotógrafa británica feminista y aventurera, viajó a México a principios del siglo XX, y su relato presenta una visión europea imperialista de las tierras oaxaqueñas. Si bien muestra admiración por las antiguas civilizaciones prehispánicas, Tweedie también refleja los prejuicios de su época, considerando a los descendientes indígenas como degradados y racialmente inferiores. A lo largo del texto, la autora celebra los logros del Porfiriato y presenta una imagen idealizada de Porfirio Díaz, a quien retrata como un líder fuerte y benevolente. El artículo destaca cómo Tweedie, al tiempo que promueve un enfoque feminista, perpetúa una visión eurocéntrica e imperialista de México, utilizando su relato para legitimar tanto la dictadura de Díaz como la presencia de influencias tecnológicas y económicas europeas en el país. ---------- This article analyzes Brilliana Harley's perspective, known as Mrs. Alec Tweedie, on Oaxaca, based on her travel book Mexico as I Saw It (1901). Tweedie, a British feminist writer, photographer, and adventurer, traveled to Mexico in the early 20th century, and her account presents an imperialist European view of the Oaxacan lands. While she shows admiration for the ancient pre-Hispanic civilizations, Tweedie also reflects the prejudices of her time, considering the Indigenous descendants as degraded and racially inferior. Throughout the text, the author celebrates the achievements of the Porfiriato and presents an idealized image of Porfirio Díaz, whom she portrays as a strong and benevolent leader. The article highlights how Tweedie, while promoting a feminist approach, perpetuates a Eurocentric and imperialist view of Mexico, using her account to legitimize both Díaz's dictatorship and the presence of European technological and economic influences in the country.
