Abstract

This study investigated the role of informal distributed leadership in dealing with the complexities of adopting technology innovation in Higher Education contexts. In the study, in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were held with a group of informal leaders in a South African university. The findings suggest that informal distributed leadership works best in promoting technology adoption when there is a clear understanding of: (1) the locus of control of technology adopters; (2) power contestations between academics and students; (3) alignment of technology with pedagogical goals; and (4) shared intentionality between the core group of informal leaders. In practical terms, the study offers a middle-of-the-road approach to diffusion of technology innovation as an alternative to the ineffective top-down and individual innovative leader (bottom-up) approaches. For originality/novelty, the study introduces the distributed leadership theory into the technology adoption discourse.

Determinants of Technology Innovation Implementation Effectiveness in Higher Education Institutions

Higher education institutions have continued to acquire technologies with alacrity. However, the transition from adoption to application in teaching and learning has been below expectations. This exploratory study investigated the lack of cadence between adoption and effective implementation of educational technology initiatives. The study was based on PHEA-ETI projects that ran between June 2008 and June 2012. The projects entailed implementation of technology initiatives for example animating science content among others. A questionnaire was sent to all persons involved in the implementation of the projects. Out of the 163 targeted respondents, 105 usable responses were received. Team leaders were interviewed with focus groups held with implementation teams. The study adopted: top management, financial motivation, organizational culture. The new model added the variables: team leadership, monitoring and evaluation and innovation efficacy. When the data was analysed using SPSS version 17, the results confirmed determinants from earlier studies while also showing that team leadership and project efficacy were significant factors to consider in technology innovation implementation.

The contingent Adoption of ICT Innovations: the Case of an Indonesian University

Using the context of a university in a developing country, this research is employing a single case study with embedded design to examine the perspective of academics as secondary adopters of managerial ICT innovations. By exploring the influence of mediating factors towards the adoption and implementation of the innovations, this research will contribute to and extend the hybrid innovation diffusion framework advocated by Gallivan (2001) in a university setting in Indonesia. Gallivan (2001) suggests that innovation diffusion studies should accommodate the contingent adoption scenario where the innovation is first adopted at an organisational level, leaving organisation members as secondary adopters. Universities frequently utilise this scenario as university executives initially adopt innovations before mandating them to academics. Integration of ICT for Developing Distributed Leadership in Learning Networks

This paper analyses the importance of distributed leadership in Learning Networks and presents new organizational training practices by integrating ICT. The team-based formal or informal networked or virtual (online) collaboration requires a different kind of leadership from that in positional hierarchies. Distributed leadership responses to complex situations and fosters team performance, facilitated through group interaction and decision-making, active distribution of specific tasks. The paper follows a qualitative research approach: case study. Drawing on qualitative evidence the paper analysis distributed leadership development process in an informal, networked, technology-enabled environment. The project influenced new style of relationship in the form of distributed leadership and improved efficiently learning capabilities. The analyses of research results revealed that applying ICT technologies for developing distributed leadership was associated with higher networked team as well as training performance.

Spreading Educational Technology Innovations: Cultivating Communities

This chapter describes an approach to promote the development and spread of educational technology innovations. The approach nurtures a culture of innovation and reflective practice of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) use for teaching and learning amongst teachers under Singapore's 3rd Masterplan for ICT in Education. It discusses system support, processes, and strategies which a centralised agency, like the Ministry of Education Headquarters (MOE HQ), employs to encourage schools and teachers to participate in ground-up experi-mentations of ICT-mediated innovations, translation, and spreading. This chapter discusses cultivating eduLab communities to facilitate spreading and adopting effective educational technology innovations across schools. The chapter describes processes for translating research ideas into innovations for scaling, by (1) scanning ideas, (2) prototyping innovations through projects, and (3) spreading or scaling up through communities. It elaborates considerations for evaluating innovations and strategies to scale up innovations. The chapter proposes that scaling includes explicit knowledge and tacit dimensions of teachers adapting innovations for contexts. Thus, communities and champions are drivers for spreading. The chapter extends the principle of "structured informality" to describe top-down supports for bottom-up efforts, that is, how system structures leverage informality in communities, where HQ officers and teachers dialogue to build understandings, adapt core principles to contexts and develop champions who further drive diffusion. The chapter proposes design principles for cultivating communities based on literature from communities of practice and discusses this using three case examples. It concludes with how design principles align with the principle of structured informality to use communities as mechanism for scaling.

The Role of Institutional Leaderships in the SAPO Campus' Adoption Process

SAPO Campus (SC) is a web 2.0 service platform, whose aim is to promote collaboration, communication and sharing practices in institutional settings, specifically in educational contexts. Since 2012, a group of schools has promoted the institutional adoption of SC. Taking into account the fact that this is an intentional process as institutions support the platform’s adoption, a study was carried out in order to identify the involvement strategies used by principals and school leaders when adopting this technology. In the last decade, emerging technologies and transformative practices have diffused into higher education social systems in ways that formal leadership styles are increasingly stretched to both keep abreast of and to manage. While many scholars have argued for the importance of the role of leadership styles in shaping the strategic direction of institutions, there is a paucity of research on the role that informal leaders, and more particularly opinion leaders and change agents, can play in enabling wide-scale adoption of innovations in higher education institutions. This paper focuses on the ways in which leadership in higher education can best extend their influence to accelerate the diffusion of transformational educational practices using emerging technologies by leveraging informal leaders. To illustrate how this could be achieved, we report on a study of 22 public higher education institutions in South Africa involving 259 participants who responded to an online survey. The survey focused on the uses of emerging technologies to transform the teaching and learning practices and the nature of institutional support such initiatives received. The findings reveal that for emerging technologies to be diffused in institutional social systems, more transformative and less transactional leadership is required. The paper proposes a model for accelerating the diffusion of emerging technologies in higher education institutions and concludes that leveraging informal leadership is particularly critical in accelerating the uptake of emerging technologies practices.

Framing innovation: The role of distributed leadership in gaining acceptance of large-scale technology initiatives

This dissertation of practice utilized a multiple case-study approach to examine distributed leadership within five school districts that were attempting to gain acceptance of a large-scale 1:1 technology initiative. Using frame theory and distributed leadership theory as theoretical frameworks, this study interviewed each district's superintendent and members of the technology leadership team and assessed how they interacted with the superintendent and each other. Using these theoretical frameworks, this study made several findings relevant to scholarship around technology leadership at the school district level. One finding related to frame theory was that superintendents achieved acceptance of these large-scale 1:1 technology initiatives using the prognostic and motivational frames. Furthermore, superintendents considered constraints and developed strategic processes for implementation of technology initiatives. With respect to distributed leadership theory, this study found that the technology leadership teams included a primary leader and secondary leaders. Furthermore, superintendents interacted with the technology leadership team through institutional practices and took on tasks that fell within their job responsibilities. Typically, these institutional practices were regularly scheduled meetings, such as a district leadership team meeting. Lastly, the technology leadership team interacted through institutional Research conducted and report produced in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education.

Identifying key actors for technology adoption in higher education: A social network approach

Higher education institutions are increasingly implementing strategies and practices aimed towards enhancing learning for the future by integrating educational technologies with classroom instruction. Despite the notable affordances these technologies bring to the learning context, there continues to be some resistance within the academy. Senior higher education administrators or leaders are frequently challenged with developing novel strategies to influence technology adoption. Prior studies relating to technology adoption and diffusion have emphasized the importance of collaboration, mentorship, and communities of practice in influencing the level of technology acceptance. Research in social networks has also shown that key actors within a network can assist with the dissemination of information. This case study investigated the relationship between the position of instructors within their departmental social network and their level of technology adoption to begin to identify strategic access points for facilitating technology adoption within higher education.

Effective Implementation of Technology Innovations in Higher Education Institutions A Survey of Selected Africa Universities 9 12 13

The purpose of this paper was to provide a deeper understanding of what would spur effective implementation of technology in higher education institutions. This was by looking at both descriptive issues and also delving deep into underlying issues. This multinational study was based on 26 technology implementation projects drawn from seven (7) universities spread in six countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The exploratory study adopted a critical realism method based on mixed-method approach. A total of 105 usable survey responses were received with 53 interviews conducted. Logistic regression model was used as the inferential for analysing quantitative data where SPSS version 17 and R statistical packages were used. Interview data was analysed using theoretical thematic analysis model. The study results demonstrated that monitoring and evaluation, top management, organizational culture, team leadership, financial motivation, organizational climate and innovation efficacy were significant within the model. However, it was noted that Technology framing, innovation environment and innovation attributes equally affected technology implementation. The study was limited to a specific funded project, there is need to test the results on another similar technology project. HEIs should invest in capacity development in technology to enhance absorptive capacity. Further, there is need to enhance technology transfer for any externally funded project so as to build institutional absorptive capacity for technological innovations. The paper went beyond the normal descriptive nature on but brought out the underlying issue in technology implementation especially in a challenged environment.

    Young learners represent a source of renewable energy that could benefit communities worldwide. While there are a growing number of isolated case examples of successful community engagement projects led by youth and their educators from around the world, a gap remains regarding a mechanism by which these projects can be connected to share best practices. In this article, we introduce a core curriculum for civic engagement (CC4CE) that can serve as a mechanism to bring various community engagement projects together through collaborative learning networks. The focus of an ongoing international research project, the primary objectives of the CC4CE are to (a) optimize school-led community improvement initiatives worldwide, (b) support youth and adult learning across academic disciplines and, (c) promote the development of 21st-century knowledge transfer skills. The design of the CC4CE is particularly suited for guiding community collaboration and implementation of appropriate technology through service learning. Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research methods, and the discipline of Integration and Implementation Science are utilized to guide collaboration and teamwork within CC4CE networks and social action during community outreach. Development of the CC4CE seeks to empower learners with the skills and confidence needed to take-on the mounting social and environmental challenges of our time.
