Outline

Beyond News, User-generated content on Dutch media websites

Abstract

Interviews with twenty executives and editors of Dutch broadcasters and newspapers indicate that the contribution of user-generated content (UGC) like comments, blogs, photos and videos to journalism were rather modest. In contrast to other studies, however, the reason seems to be a lack of interest or skills by the audience; amateur journalism is hard to find and difficult to practice. While journalists define their work in terms of news, website users seem to have a different opinion. Readers seemed much more devoted to non-news material, which seemed to be beneficial to the websites: committing and attracting readers.
