The ITU in 2006 agreed to have the rest of the world switch from analogue to digital by June 17, but several countries, including Zimbabwe, have failed to meet the deadline due to financial challenges.

The “digitization” of the traditional newspaper has been ongoing for more than a decade now (Bocz... more The “digitization” of the traditional newspaper has been ongoing for more than a decade now (Boczkowski, 2004). In the recent years Zimbabwe has seen synchronization of print and online versions with quite a number of news organizations incorporating digital content in their publications. Jenkins (2004:44) notes that the online environment is more conducive for “citizen participation”, with its limited control over their content. This compromises the traditional boundaries of news production, and more so tend to undermine the journalistic role of gatekeeping (Bruns, 2005).Paterson and Domingo (2008) assert that the gradual shift from print to online has not only modified the traditional design of news, but to a great extent it has opened new “gates” to user engagement, enabling audio-visual comments and reader blog sites. This developing field of user involvement in news production is called “citizen journalism” (Deuze, 2008).However, the rising tension for the traditional is on how can it adapt the news trends brought by the online version versus its longstanding power over information flow. The rise of user generated content and the predictable challenges it presents to the traditional newspaper has received much attention in the scholarly circles, for example with writers like (Paterson and Domingo, 2008, Bruns, 2007, Deuze, 2008).This research seeks to examine the impact of consumer generated on professional journalism in Zimbabwe. Past related researches have often focused on the European landscape and the new tools brought by 'citizen journalists' in developed countries, however, this study looks at the case of Alpha Media Holdings(AMH) a news organisation in a developing country therefore the study intends to assess how the organisation is adopting the new trends brought by UGC.This study seeks to understand the influence that UGC has on the professional practice of journalism and how AMH editors and journalists respond to the conceptual and practical challenges posed by it, as a concept that appear to compromise their journalistic practices of agenda setting and gate keeping.
