Web Services and Semantic Web for Adaptive Systems

Adaptation/personalization is one of the main issues for web services. Adaptive web applications have the ability to deal with different users' needs for enhancing usability and comprehension and for dealing with large repositories. Indeed, adaptive web services -also often called Adaptive Hypermedia Systems -can provide different kinds of information, different layouts and different navigation tools according to users' needs.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) supports the integration of distributed and heterogeneous services by offering Web Service composition standards which describe service composition as a business process. However, the composition model proposed in SOA does not explicitly deal with personalization and context-awareness. In order to address such limitations, we have developed the CAWE conceptual framework. In this paper, we describe the personalization support offered by our framework to the development of context-aware, adaptive web-based systems. CAWE handles the integration of heterogeneous services and information sources; moreover, it manages long-lasting interactions with multiple cooperating users and it personalizes the business logic of the application by adapting the workflow activities to be carried out.

The semantic web has the potential to revolutionize the ways in which users search and manipulate the rapidly expanding amount of information on the web. This expansion, coupled with the capability of this information to be semantically related in a multitude of different ways, leads to increased possibilities for the Web user becoming 'lost in hyperspace'. This danger stems from the fact that technologies which encourage semantic markup do not necessarily encourage appropriate vocabulary usage, resulting in inappropriate or misleading semantic relationships being formed. Users' expectations from information services on the Web are also increasing. This will lead to a proliferation of web services in this Semantic Web. Adaptive techniques, and in particular those used in Adaptive Hypermedia (AH), may be used to alleviate the semantic overload, while at the same time meeting the raised expectations of users. This approach leads to a number of research questions: How can Web Services be (successfully) used in an adaptive environment? and How do adaptive hypermedia and open hypermedia combine? This paper argues for the integration of semantic web, semantic interoperability, web services and AH technologies to meet and exceed the information requirements of users in the emerging Semantic Web.

In recent years service-orientation has increasingly been adopted as one of the main approaches for developing complex distributed systems out of reusable components called services. Realizing the potential benefits of this software engineering approach requires semi-automated and automated techniques and tools for searching or locating services, selecting the suitable ones, composing them into complex processes, resolving heterogeneity issues through process and data mediation, and reduce other tedious yet recurrent tasks with minimal manual effort. Just as semantics has brought significant benefits to search, integration and analysis of data, semantics is also seen as a key to achieving a greater level of automation to service orientation. This has lead to research and development, as well as standardization efforts on semantic Web services. Activities related to semantic Web services have involved developing conceptual models or ontologies, algorithms and engines that could support machines in semi-automatically or automatically discovering, selecting, composing, orchestrating, mediating and executing services. This chapter provides an overview of the area after nearly a decade of research. The main principles and conceptual models proposed thus far including OWL-S, WSMO, and SAWSDL/METEOR-S. The main approaches developed by the research community that are able to use these semantic descriptions of services to support some of the typical activities related to services and service-based applications are described. Next, the ideas and techniques described through two applications that integrate semantic Web services technologies within real-world application are illustrated. Finally, a set of key resources is provided that would allow the reader to reach a greater understanding of the field, and are the main issues that will drive the future of semantic Web services.

The current state of the art in supporting E-Learning objectives is primarily based on providing a learner with learning content by using metadata standards like ADL SCORM 2004 or IMS Learning Design. By following this approach, several issues can be observed including high development costs due to a limited reusability across different standards and learning contexts. To overcome these issues, our approach changes this data-centric paradigm to a highly dynamic service-oriented approach.

The principles of the WWW used today rely solely on links and on content presented through simple HTML tags. The drawback of the above mentioned modus operandi is that it is purely syntactic with no clear emphasis on meaning about data. The Semantic Web approach tries to bridge that gap by providing additional information, mainly conceptual to the data at hand. In this paper we are focusing on extension of the adaptation methods with semantic adaptation dedicated to Adaptive Web-Based Systems. The approach is consisted of five steps based on querying RDF resources through SPARQL every time the user is visiting a particular resource. — The diversity of Internet users together with the explosive growth of the Web Services, has raised the need for Web Services adaptation. However, existing Web Services are not adapted to the final user profile i.e offered services do not take into account the users diversity and mobility. Therefore, profile adaptation must be suitably managed on the Web Service life cycle. In this paper, we propose a solution for profile adaptation at the design step and introduce an UML profile for Adaptive Web Service that we called AWS-UML (Adaptive Web Service UML). It increases the expressivity of UML by adding labels, graphic, stereotypes and constraints which make it possible the model Adaptive Web Services. We also present a case study to exemplify the application of our UML profile.
