Weblogs for English language learning: students' perceptions

Abstract

The digital explosion of information on the Internet has resulted in a need for a new and up-to-date way for Digital Natives to learn English. Educators have reported numerous benefits of using weblogs in English language learning. This article presents a small scale study on the use of weblogs for English language learning at tertiary level in Malaysia. Twenty six students kept weblogs for a duration of a semester. This study investigated how students perceived the use of weblogs for English language learning. A questionnaire which was made up of both close-ended and open-ended questions was administered at the end of the study. A mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to analyse the students’ responses to the questionnaire. The study found that students were aware of their audience when they blogged and that they geared their writing towards their audience. Weblogs are a popular form of easy-to-use personal publishing that has attracted millions of bloggers to share their personal thoughts, opinions, and knowledge on the web. The versatility of weblogs as a communication medium has attracted interests from educators. Educational applications of weblogs have so far included journals, e-portfolio, learning diaries, and logbooks. As in the case of other educational technologies, the perception of students is a determinant factor of whether weblogs are used in a way that elicits educational values. This paper investigates student perception towards the purposes of blogging. It reports an experience of introducing blogging tasks to third year computing students, and compares their perception with students not participating in the blogging tasks. A student perception model is proposed to explain the difference in the perception due to the experience in blogging. The paper concludes that mandatory use of weblogs in a course can gradually cultivate educationally sound perceptions in students despite of the observed misuse.

Abstract: This study sought to find out how the Fourth Semester Students of English Language Education Study Program of FKIP Untan who kept maintaining their weblogs after accomplishing Teaching Learning with ICT course use weblogs in developing writing skill. This research is a case study. Students’ experience in utilizing weblogs was elucidated with critical incident and netnography technique to find out the authenticity of students’ involvement in autonomous learning. The data derived from the questionnaires, individual in-depth interview with 7 voluntary participants, and online observation. The aim of this paper was to evaluate students’ views toward the usage of weblogs for educational purposes in Ondo state tertiary institutions. Three research questions were designed to guide the study. The population consisted of all undergraduates in three selected tertiary institutions in Ondo state. The sample of the study consisted of 358 respondents who were selected using convenience and purposive sampling techniques. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The result of the findings revealed that students are aware of the usage of weblogs for educational purposes. The findings revealed that students show a positive perception toward the weblog. Students' Perceptions of the Use of Blogs in English Language Learning

ENGLISH ABSTRACT This study aims to provide understanding about students " perceptions of the benefits of blogs in English language learning and their challenges in authoring blogs. In addition, this study explores the benefits of blogs in English language learning. Furthermore, it investigates the challenges in authoring blogs that potentially define the gaps between students " perceptions and blogging practice in English language learning. This study involves three undergraduate students at the State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. It is conducted by using two stages of semi-structured interviews through Skype. The findings from the data analysis outline that the students perceive blogs as a beneficial application for English language learning in the areas of writing, reading and communication. However, they also admit that challenges remain in authoring blogs, such as performance fluctuation, self-confidence and aspects of technology. From the findings, there is a suggestion to formulate strategies in order to counteract the challenges. Thus, the use of blogs improves the quality of English language learning in any future practice. Tidak seperti website pada umumnya, blogs merupakan aplikasi yang gratis dan sederhana yang bisa digunakan siswa walaupun mereka tidak memiliki kemampuan bahasa komputer. Blog bisa disebut sebagai sebuah lingkungan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris asli yang di dalamnya memungkinkan kegiatan refleksi dan kolaborasi. Selain itu, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi manfaat blogs dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Kemudian juga, dalam studi ini mencoba untuk menginvestigasi tantangan-tantangan dalam menggunakan blogs yang kemungkinan dapat bermanfaat untuk memahami perbedaan antara persepsi siswa dengan praktek penggunaan blog dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Subjek penelitian ini adalah tiga mahasiswa S1 di IAIN Salatiga. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan dua sesi semi-structured interviews melalui Skype. Temuan dari analisa data menyebutkan bahwa siswa menganggap blogs sebagai aplikasi yang bermanfaat untuk pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam bidang menulis, membaca, dan komunikasi. Akan tetapi mereka juga mengungkapkan bahwa terdapat tantangan dalam menggunakan blogs seperti fluktuasi kerja,kepercayaan diri dan aspek teknologi. Dari temuan tersebut kemudian memunculkan saran untuk memformulasikan strategi untuk mengatasi tantangan-tantangan tersebut. Sehingga penggunaan blogs akanmeningkatkan kualitas pembalajaran bahasa Inggris di kemudian hari.

Students’ experiences of using weblog: An exploratory study.

Recently, attempts have been made to use Weblogs and other personal webpublishing technologies to support individual and social reflection in higher education. Weblogs can be highly individual and reflective in nature, and students’ experiences and perceptions of the technology and practice are of primary importance in furthering educational use. In this phenomenological study 8 participants who maintained Weblogs in a graduate course were interviewed. Initial data analysis indicates that participants found Weblogs helpful for learning, reflecting, and building a sense of community. However, participants expressed concerns over the lack of structure for Weblog usage and the public nature of the reflective process. Implications for future practical and research applications of Weblogs are presented.

Interactional and discursive features of English-language weblogs for language learning and teaching

This chapter provides an overview of the nature of authentic (i.e., non-educational) weblogs (blogs) and offers a number a recommendations for using blogs in the English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) curriculum 1 to promote second language literacy. Our discussion centers around blog-writing as social practice as opposed to using blogs to help learners develop formal writing skills. Following a brief overview of a small corpus of diverse blogs, we provide a number of recommendations for integrating blog-reading and blog-writing in the ESL/EFL classroom. We extend Herring's (2007) multifaceted approach to analyzing computer-mediated discourse to the field of second language (L2) learning and teaching, and we discuss ways in which students and teachers can construct, manage, and analyze a corpus of blogs. We also present a number of ways to design learning opportunities in the ESL/EFL classroom around the reading and writing of blogs.

This study is an attempt to investigate the effect of weblogs on the improvement of Iranian EFL learners' writing skill. To achieve this goal, the researchers designed a weblog, which was shared by the treatment group of the study; the study had 50 EFL students divided into two groups of treatment and control. Mainly two steps were taken during the study, a pre-test and a post-test. The pre-test administration was due to check the proficiency of the participants and the post to measure the impact of the study process. The data obtained from tests and questionnaires throughout the academic year 2012, and from comments made on the blog, revealed that the students responded positively to the use of the blogs inside a class. It was found that the blog helped them to improve their writing through the collaborative learning environment that was established and through the process of writing that was adopted. There was consensus that writing for an audience and peer review contributed to the development of the collaborative learning environment and this was conducive to developing writing skills.

Pedagogical Application of Weblogging in EFL Education: Practices and Challenges

The role of ICT in EFL education has been consistently evolving providing a wide range of learning opportunities and educational affordances in reinforcing second language learning. Educators reported a great deal of benefits; thus, weblogging continues to occupy a popular spot in educational contexts at different levels. Blogs in education may be used in manifold ways (Dieu, 2004), and ELT practitioners who are into multi-modal media of communication and expression like weblogging should continue to create conditions that reinforce learning and should keep on developing a list of best practices that encourages flexibility in learning, greater interactivity, and sustainability (Genzola, 2010, p. 15). This study aims to describe the pedagogical practices employed by the author for the past two years in utilizing weblogs in English language learning among Chinese learners in an institution of higher learning in China. Further, it attempts to discuss weblog interface and associated activities found engaging as well as analyze the challenges and issues of weblog application in language education.

Weblogs enhancing EFL students’ English language learning

This study investigated the potential value of Weblog use on English language learning in the context of a university in Thailand. It examined students' perceptions of and attitudes towards using Weblogs. A content analysis was used to analyse the data that derived from short questionnaires, interview questionnaires and student Blogs. The findings indicated that the students perceived Weblog as a tool for the development of their English, in terms of writing, reading, vocabulary, and recording their learning experience. The students also viewed Weblog as giving an opportunity and freedom for self-expression in English, writing for both a local and global audience, fostering creative, analytical and critical thinking skills, creating social interaction and good relationships between writer and reader, and supporting the learning community. Overall then, in spite of some minor limitations, they had positive attitudes towards Weblog use. These findings suggest that Weblogs can provide learning motivation and opportunities for authorship and readership, as well as the development of writing and learning strategies, including critical thinking.

Weblog-Based Learning in an EFL Young Learners' Context: Students' Perspective

There has been a deeper appreciation on using technology in English classroom. It is used to create an interesting learning process. Weblog-based learning in classroom is becoming imperative nowadays since the students themselves are growing within digital era. However, this study purposes that many educators are not taking advantage of this unique and fun learning tools for young learners. This study is designed to reveal: (1) the students' background in using computer and internet to get useful information; (2) the students 'perception of the use of classroom blog learning as a tool in learning English; (3) the students' perception toward weblog activity; (4) students' perception towards the benefits of the weblog as a means of problem solving for learning English. This research applied the descriptive method which attempted to describe the primary students' response toward the use of weblog. Data obtained from 120 as a total sample of 5th grade students in an Islamic Bilingual School, West Java, Indonesia. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The findings of the present study indicated that most of the participant showed positive attitudes and willingness to integrate weblog-based learning in English classroom. This technique made them more engaged and excited to learn English. However, factors such as technical problem and bad internet connection on the use of internet could be possible impediments to the use of classroom blog.

Weblogging: Innovation for Communication in English Class

This paper is an attempt to exemplify how weblogging can raise learners' language awareness and prepare them for communication in the networked world. The research aimed at the investigation of applying innovative techniques for written and oral communication in English classes. An exploratory study of using a variety of ICT activities at tertiary level was conducted. Class experiences of creating weblogs for learning purposes and using them for online activities with university students who learn English for Specific Purposes are described. The methods employed for data gathering and treatment consisted of administering specially designed questionnaires, analyzing students' responses, carrying out weblogging activities, providing feedback to learners and evaluating learners' performance in various online activities, and finally assessing the utility of weblogging. Our findings show that the experience of writing for an audience provides an important opportunity for learning English. Although there is a limitation to the study-the data are from a small sample of participants – this study yielded some practical insights and implications which are presented in this article.

Genzola English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Department Jilin University—Lambton College, Changhun, China Abstract The use of personal web publishing and social networking tools has been an emerging practice in the field of Computer Assisted Language Learning or CALL (Campbell, 2003). Weblogging, for instance, has already established itself in the popular media. Given its educational affordances, the utilization of weblogs in English Language Teaching (ELT) and English Language Learning (ELL) is deemed indispensable. This paper presents the implementation of weblogging activities in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program of Jilin University—Lambton College in China. Weblogs provide the students with extensive opportunities to put what they are learning in the classroom to use in expressive, interactive, and immersive ways. In addition to reading and writing practice, weblogs allow the learners to share their thoughts and ideas through blog posts made on the forum section and walls wherein the resulting language exchanges expose them to authentic uses of language that supplemented classroom activities and experiences. A convenience sampling from Jilin University—Lambton College (JULC) consisted of 71 Chinese university students from three different EAP classes participated in this exploratory action research based on weblogging experiences for language learning in English. A survey was distributed at the end of the course to all participating students to gather feedback and input on student views in relation to the classroom-blogging activities employed. Findings from an attitudinal survey performed reveal that the students had an exceptionally positive attitude for weblogging. Integration of Weblogs in Developing Language Skills of ESL Learners

Learner development greatly depends on language awareness which not only focuses on language itself, but also a cognitive reflection upon language functions. Language awareness can be fostered by giving learners various choices in learning activities. The variety of choice stimulates learner interest and has a potential for learner development. This paper discusses the application of the latest innovation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which is known as weblog for learner language development. The aim of this study is to explore the pedagogical potentials of using weblog as a tool in developing the language skills of pre-university ESL students in a university in Malaysia. In addition, this study further discusses the impacts weblogging activities can have on students’ motivation to write in English. Drawing on students’ blogs as well as the responses given by students in interviews and questionnaires the paper ends by highlighting the benefits that can be acquired as a result of the integration weblogs in language learning classrooms.
