Saving the Guna Yala

2022, My Liveable City

Abstract

The Guna Yala (meaning Land Guna) is a sovereign indigenous territory located on an archipelago of approximately 365 islands along the Caribbean coast at the Northeastern border of the Republic of Panama. Today, the Guna people find themselves amidst another struggle. Increasing urbanisation along the Panama coastline coupled with larger global factors are affecting the coral reef islands that contain their villages, while sea level rise threatens their unique land-water culture that has endured for centuries. This article is an effort to document and highlight the ‘amphibious’ Guna Yala cultural heritage and underscore the urgency to act towards its conservation and future.
