Abstract
It is our great pleasure, as guest editors, to present an issue with invited articles by authors of high-impact articles from the journal's past. By the end of 2015, the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education completed its 25th volume and its 25th year of operation. This milestone called for a celebration of a scholarly kind. The current issue is part of that celebration. Although several landmark publications in the field appeared long before the journal's first year of publication (1989), the journal's early years coincided with the coalescing of the research community in Artificial Intelligence and Education (AIED). The same period saw the start of two relevant conferences, the International Conference on AI in Education (first held in 1987) and Intelligent Tutoring Systems (first held in 1988), although there had been two AI and Education conferences in the UK prior to

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that involves the development of intelligent machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. AI has the potential to address some of the biggest issues facing education today, innovate teaching and learning methods, and hasten the achievement of SDG 4 (quality education). With continued investment in research and responsible implementation of AI, we can create a more equitable and inclusive education system that empowers students to succeed. In this paper, we discuss the history, roles, benefits, drawbacks and examples of AI in education and its future implications.
Imagine having a personal tutor that could answer any question, about any assignment, on any topic, which is available 24 hours, and 7 days a week. Imagine that tutor also being free of charge and accessible from home, or on campus, or even at the local café. Now, imagine there are lots of them, all hovering around each and every student, just waiting to help. That is exactly what exists with Generative Artificial Intelligence tools. However, like any tools, they have to be used correctly, and users need to be trained in how to use them. I am a lecturer in the University of Adelaide's preparatory program, delivering units on academic literacy and research design. I am also a post-doctoral researcher at the university's Unit for Digital Learning and Society. I have actively encouraged my preparatory student cohort to engage with AI tools ethically, responsibly and transparently as though they were a virtual personal tutor. The students have access to Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus (WF+) through the university's digital learning platform Canvas. They are also encouraged to engage with Grammarly. In my classes I have also given instructions on how to engage with GenAI, including ChatGPT, ChatPDF, Copilot and others. This autoethnographic study discusses how I have actively encouraged the students to engage with these tools, my reflections on this process, and responses from the students. AI as a personal tutor holds promise for enhancing student learning experiences. However, students expressed a sense of stigma connected to engaging with AI tools. As we continue to explore its potential, understanding the effects on academic performance, self-beliefs, and socialization is essential for effective educational AI design.

Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have sparked renewed interest in its potential to improve education. However, AI is a loose umbrella term that refers to a collection of methods, capabilities, and limitations-many of which are often not explicitly articulated by researchers, education technology companies, or other AI developers. In this paper, we seek to clarify what "AI" is and the potential it holds to both advance and hamper educational opportunities that may improve the human condition. We offer a basic introduction to different methods and philosophies underpinning AI, discuss recent advances, explore applications to education, and highlight key limitations and risks. We conclude with a set of questions that educationalists may ask as they encounter AI in their research and practice. Our hope is to make often jargon-laden terms and concepts accessible, so that all are equipped to understand, interrogate, and ultimately shape the development of humancentered AI in education.

This article focuses on contributions that AI can make to address long-term educational goals. It describes five challenges that would support: (1) mentors for every learner; (2) learning twenty-first century skills; (3) interaction data to support learning; (4) universal access to global classrooms; and (5) lifelong and life-wide learning. A vision and brief research agenda are described for each challenge along with goals that lead to access to global educational resources and the reuse and sharing of digital educational resources. Progress cannot merely be defined by restructuring or redeveloping conventional/existing methods, alone. When the first automobile was invented, it was done with hopes to revolutionize the way we travel. We didn't focus on making horses go faster, but rather developed machines that could take us to farther distances, with comfort and reliability.
