In order to provide a quality service to the clients, the public road transport companies have to perform operations scheduling. To achieve this goal, these companies have to handle various types of information: geographic, traffic, statistical, technical, etc. Processing these kinds of information leads to a problem: the high level of dynamism and high volume of data implied. In this paper we explain a system model to resolve this problem; this model is based on distributed computing and remote sensing. Nowadays, this model is used in the metropolitan road transport of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) and it enables the automatic processing of all the information related to the production, generated by a fleet of 305 buses, transporting more than 30,000,000 passengers and controlling all the planning operations of the fleet.

The impact of road public transport in urban transportation cannot be ignored, however, the quality of services provided is not high enough. This has made it unattractive to prospective passengers and less competitive to private transport. One of the ways of resolving these challenges with a view to increasing the quality of service is by the provision of platforms that provides travel information in real time to prospective users. This was achieved in this paper using web, mobile, and short messaging service platforms. The developed platforms employed an artificial neural network-based bus arrival time prediction model for predicting bus arrival time. The accuracy of the prediction model was evaluated using mean absolute error and mean absolute percentage error while the performance and impact of the developed platforms were assessed from users' perspective through a survey based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model.

One of the main problems in urban areas is the steady growth in car ownership and traffic levels. Therefore, the challenge of sustainability is focused on a shift of the demand for mobility from cars to collective means of transport. For this purpose, buses are a key element of the public transport systems. In this respect Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) systems help people change their travel behaviour towards more sustainable transport modes. This paper provides an assessment methodology which evaluates how RTPI systems improve the quality of bus services performance in two European cities, Madrid and Bremerhaven. In the case of Madrid, bus punctuality has increased by 3%. Regarding the travellers perception, Madrid raised its quality of service by 6% while Bremerhaven increased by 13%. On the other hand, the users´ perception of Public Transport (PT) image increased by 14%.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are vital to increase safety and tackle growing emission and congestion problems. They can make transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable by applying various information and communication technologies to all modes of passenger and freight transport. Moreover, the integration of existing technologies can create new services. ITS are key to support jobs and growth in the transport sector. Connecting Traffic Management System (Traffic signals and Traffic Command centers) with a GIS enabled digital road map of the city and using the power of analytics is a key to smooth traffic management. Using real time analytics of data from these sources and linking them to some trends, we can manage traffic flow much better. Data analytics tools get data from the Traffic Management System, align this in real time with GIS mapping and parking management data provide information to the driver, thus help reducing traffic pile up. Also, information from these systems are being projected in real time on digital screens installed at City Center entrances, guiding drivers to available parking slots and streets. This not only helps reduce congestion but also saves lot on time and fuel, thus making environment cleaner and better to live.

Until now, the existing Geographical Information Systems were mainly developed concerning the needs of vehicle users. However in recent years with the proliferation and evolution of mobile devices, navigation systems started to be directed towards the needs of the pedestrian users but their full potential is still far from being exploited. Pedestrians have a higher degree of freedom so the information contained in these systems is different from that destined for vehicles. There is also the information about public transport networks which is how the pedestrian usually travels great distances.

Public transportation is one of the main means of transport utilized by the population, however, it is still inefficient. One of the problems seen by the population is the delay of the bus. This can happen for several reasons such as traffic or accidents on the road. Tracking a bus through GPS and GSM/GPRS can help solve some of the problems related to lack of predictability of arrival, through the planning and management of the bus system. This project proposes the development of a public transportation tracking system, which will estimate the arrival of a bus at a desired bus stop by the passenger as well as allowing the passenger to see the bus in real time. Thus, the passengers will have better control over their time. For this to become a reality, the tracking system will be integrated and programmed into a hardware module to determine the location of the vehicle and a mobile application to visualize the bus on a map. It is expected to make public transport an efficient means of transport, where the user can better plan, due to the more accurate itinerary, and the bus company can make more concise decisions in regards to route timing.

City efficiency largely depends upon the effectiveness of its transport systems, that is, efficiency with which people and goods are moved throughout the city. Poor transport systems stifle economic growth and development, and the net effect may be a loss of competitiveness in both domestic as well as international markets. Though India is developing country Indian cities have higher vehicle ownership rate, number of vehicles per capita, we suffer from worse congestion, delay, pollution and accidents than cities in the industrialized world. Road traffic congestion is a recurring problem worldwide. The challenges that people face nowadays are, if a person wants a public transportation system for traveling, he must find a vehicle himself ie, he had to go to a taxi stand or an auto rickshaw stand. Availability of vehicle is not sure at all junctions. The Driver may not be aware of the traffic blocks in the route. To solve all such challenges we are proposing a new system named GT-FAST(Get There Fast), which is intended to solve the difficulty in getting vehicle service for transportation and provide advanced traffic information to the commuters thus reducing transportation issues. GT-FAST provides a way to efficiently use services of all public vehicles to everyone with equal priority. It works with GPS along with GSM and a real time Server. They all are combined together to form GT-FAST system.

Most of the world's cities have significant traffic problems involving peak hour congestion and pollution. Information supplied to potential users via the internet and phone systems can improve transport effectiveness in two major ways. The first is to inform travellers of integrated public transport options using real time accurate information. Travellers can then accurately choose their public transport route. Second, since most cars are occupied by a driver only, a market can be set up for potential drivers to meet potential passengers in an effective ridesharing scheme, in which authentication, micro-payments and effective coordination can be executed using real time hub and mobile phone technology. This paper outlines the form of these systems and presents a market research study which demonstrates that such services would be popular. Benefits of such services would accrue to many stakeholders: governments would avoid future capital expenditures on expensive road capacity, citizens would be able to travel faster due to reduced congestion, and the environment would suffer from less carbon and other forms of pollution due to reduced and faster flowing traffic volumes.
