Now, at the beginning of the third millennium, the spread of digital systems and providing various facilities through it lead to bring the digital technology into the realm of telecommunications and the radio and television transmitters have changed from the analog systems to digital systems. In fact, the various advantages and capabilities of digital systems make the changes. Undoubtedly destroying the signal and weakening it through the path, because of the different sources of noises and environmental barriers on the one hand and the single purpose of the system and its lack of flexibility on the other hand, are the limitations of the analog systems. In digital systems, due to the use of zero and one logic, the possibility of changing the state was very low and by using methods of error correction (Hamming codes and cyclic redundancy check or CRC), these changes may be reversible. The signal received by the receiver, in terms of valuation, is very close to the transmitter and has high quality. This issue and many other features that will be discussed in the article has caused that in many countries, the broadcasting systems of radio and television transmitters convert from analog to digital.

This paper presents some aspects related to the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) investigation. The basic aspects of DVB are presented, with an emphasis on DVB-T version of standard. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the way that the transmission of the transport streams is realized in case of the Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T). To accomplish this, first, Digital Video Broadcasting standard is presented, and then the main aspects of DVB testing and analysis of the transport streams are investigated. The paper presents also the results obtained using two programs designed for DVB analysis: Mosalina and TSA.

This article presents the factors that may degrade the reception of a digital TV signal, through the analysis of a communication channel. Methodologies and factorial experimental results with the communication channel are presented, and the analysis of meteorological factors that influence the reception quality of the ISDB-T B system based on data regarding the quality of the digital signals collected from some TV stations in São Paulo. From the data obtained, statistical techniques were applied, such as planning and analysis of factorial experiments, simple and multiple linear regressions tests for measurement equality in order to determine which factors had greater influence on the degradation of digital TV signal.

This paper introduces different standards implemented in existing Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting systems to allow the fruition of interactive services and applications through digital Set Top Boxes. It focuses on the interoperability issue between the Brazilian and the European architectures. In fact, despite in Brazil the GEM specification has been designed to foster wide content compatibility across a range of interactive platforms, it has never come to a final implementation and deployment. As a result the interoperability issue has been deeply explored in the BEACON project and an innovative system architecture has been developed to deploy t-learning services across Europe and Brazil, providing integration of those systems that were not able to interoperate until nowadays. This work is an important step in the direction of standards' interoperability. As a result, MHP and Ginga NCL-Lua implementation appeared to be the very best choice to deliver interactive services in an interoperable mode between European and Brazilian digital television.

In early 2003, the Brazilian government accelerated the decision process on analog to digital transition of terrestrial TV broadcast infrastructure, naming this initiative The Brazilian Digital Television System (SBTVD). This paper describes the access device architecture we have proposed for the SBTVD, as well as related issues. We focused on several requirements among which: flexibility to support the social economical diversity enabling market implementations that can vary on cost, complexity and applications; digital inclusion targeting a minimal cost architecture providing a simple access device to information and services by convergent broadcast and point-to-point telecommunication means; and scalability targets incorporating state-of-the-art technology, considering emerging services and the current legacy analog TV infrastructure available in Brazil. We cover the following specific topics: an architecture overview considering scalability, interoperability and regional and international requirements, operating system and middleware interfaces, audio and video coding formats and associate standards, technical and economical analysis, usability and user interface consistency. Finally two prototypes for the outlined access device architecture are reported.

Digital broadcasting has been an area of active research, development, innovation and business models development in recent years. This paper presents a survey on the characteristics of the digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB) standards, and implementation status of DTTB worldwide showing the standards adopted. It is clear that only the developed countries and some in the developing ones shall be able to beat the ITU set analogue to digital broadcasting migration deadline because of the challenges that these countries faces in digitizing their terrestrial broadcasting. The challenges to keep on track the DTTB migration plan are also discussed in this paper. They include financial, technology gap, policies alignment with DTTB technology, etc. The reported performance comparisons for the different standards are also presented. The interesting part is that the results for many comparative studies depends to a large extent on the objective behind such studies, hence counter claims are common.

Its physical layer, Advanced Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (Advanced ISDB-T), is based on frequency division multiplexing, and large-scale field tests have been conducted at experimental transmitter stations. Its transport layer, MPEG Media Transport (MMT), is based on Internet protocol (IP) and already used in ultra-high definition television (UHDTV) satellite broadcasting, and it enables to provide integrated broadcast and broadband services such as multi-view videos, content replacement, and augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) in TV programs. In order to show the feasibility of the advanced broadcasting system, complete verifications of it were conducted in four metropolitan cities of Japan. These verifications confirmed that basic services such as UHD content for fixed reception and HD content for mobile reception can be provided simultaneously. Furthermore, MMT/IP-based integrated broadcast-broadband services were verified using data both broadcast and broadband.

Abstract: The paper is proposing a study and practical experiments of testing methods in digital television, transmitted in Digital Video Broadcasting standard. The main objective of the research presented in this paper was to establish if the testing tools designed and validated for DVB-S, are useable to evaluate DVB-S2. This is important in educational environments and small enterprises, to find new applications for the existing equipment.

This special issue of the PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE presents a systematical and complete tutorial on digital television (DTV), produced by a team of DTV experts worldwide. This introductory paper puts the current DTV systems into perspective and explains the historical background and different evolution paths that each system took. The main focus is on terrestrial DTV systems, but satellite and cable DTV are also covered, as well as several other emerging services.
