In this paper, two new automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) protocols using a concatenated coding scheme are described. The structure, introduced in a codeword of a concatenated coding scheme, is used to improve the performance of ARQ protocols, especially for high error rates in the communication channel. The performance of the scheme described herein is derived through theoretical analysis. The results show that the proposed schemes outperform other similar ARQ protocols.

This paper proposes a method for automatic ship wake detection from SAR image. A localized Radon transform is processed around the ship target to detect linear features after ship target detection. It can smooth the speckle noise and improve the SNR in Radon transform space. So the false alarms can be reduced. If the extracted linear feature is proved to be a ship wake after testing, the wake line can be reconstructed in the original SAR image and the ship orientation can be estimated without ambiguity.

The optimization of the system parameters with the transmission channel affected by fading have been derived theoretically. The results of computer simulations performed to evaluate throughput show considerable improvement with respect to the classical ARQ protocols, making the proposed scheme especially suitable for mobile communications.

The authors present a complete digital signal processing chain for the automatic detection of ships in SAR images. Particular attention has been devoted to two problems: the prefiltering problem which aims to reduce the speckle noise in the image, and the robustness problem that is related to the optimisation of the true-target detection/rejection capability. The processing chain has been implemented and tested on a sequential machine and on a parallel architecture of IMS T800 transputers.
