The results presented in this chapter fall within the framework of the FP 7 EU project ‘Forestering European Drought Research and Science-Policy Interfacing’ (project number 282769). The project aims to reduce Europe’s future vulnerability and risk of drought by innovative in-depth studies that combine drought investigations in case study areas in water stressed regions with drought analysis at the pan-European scale. In this perspective, it grants in particular an important role to the historical approach in helping us to understand better the frequency and severity of the droughts during the last 500 years as well as the reactions of the ancient societies. Droughts are a factor of historic durability and because of their impacts on societies, they left multiple indicators in the archives of the last 500 years. For the record, it is necessary to remind ourselves that the general term of ‘drought’ covers different notions. In the most frequent meaning of the word, it is synonymic of a pluviometric deficit and an extreme climate event. It is thus important to understand that for the historian droughts are viewed through the 'social signature' of these extreme events as recorded over the centuries in the European archives. They can thus be appreciably different from the definitions used by the hydrologists, and need to be assessed and categorized according to the Historical Severity Drought Scale in order to provide usual comparative data series.

A Prequel to the Dantean Anomaly: The Water Seesaw and Droughts of 1302-1307 in Europe

The cold/wet anomaly of the 1310s («Dantean anomaly») has attracted a lot of attention from scholars, as it is commonly interpreted as a signal of the transition between the MCA and the LIA. The huge variability that can be observed during this decade, similarly with the high interannual variability observed in the 1340s, has been highlighted as a side-effect 10 of this rapid climatic transition. In this paper, we demonstrate that a multi-seasonal drought of almost two years occurred in the Mediterranean between 1302 and 1304, and respectively a series of hot and dry summers north of the Alps from 1304 to 1306. We propose to interpret this outstanding dry anomaly, unique in the 13th/14th century, combined with the 1310s and the 1340s cold anomalies, as part of the climatic shift from the MCA to the LIA. Our reconstruction of the predominant weather patterns of the first decade of the 14th century from documentary and proxy data lead to the identification of multiple European 15 water seesaw events in 1302-1307, with similarities to the seesaw conditions which prevailed in 2018 over continental Europe. It can be debated to which extent the 1302-1307 period can be compared to what is currently discussed regarding the influence of the Arctic amplification phenomenon on the increasing frequency of long-lasting stable weather patterns that occurred since the late 1980s. Additionally, this paper deals with socioeconomic and cultural responses to drought risks in the Middle Ages from contemporary sources and provides evidence that there is a significant correlation between blazes that devastated cities 20 and pronounced dry seasons.

Central Europe, 1531–1540 CE: The driest summer decade of the past five centuries?

The Thirty Years' War, which took place from 1618 to 1648 CE, was an armed military conflict in Europe. It resulted from the culmination of theological differences between advocates of the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as a power struggle for European political hegemony. This war brought about extensive devastation to Europe. Based on documentary evidence, this paper characterizes the climate, weather extremes, and economic and socio-political events in central Europe during that time. Natural climate forcing indicates a gradual climate deterioration during the first half of the 17th century, associated with a decrease in solar activity towards the Maunder Minimum and increased volcanic activity. The mean temperatures in central Europe from 1618 to 1648 were significantly colder than the reference period of 1961 to 1990 in winter, autumn, and annually, while precipitation and drought means did not differ significantly from the reference period. Summer temperatures, spring precipitation, and drought also exhibited significantly greater variability. As for weather extremes, particularly late winter, late spring and early autumn frosts, floods, intense rain spells, and droughts affected grain, fruit, and vine grape harvests, as well as the yields of other crops. These weather extremes contributed to various human impacts, such as food shortages (reflecting harvests and grain prices), famines, and epidemics. Ultimately, these events, along with the effects of the war, led to a decline in the population. The results obtained are discussed within the broader European context, taking into account climate, weather extremes, and socioeconomic impacts.

Kiss-Nikolić: Droughts, dry spells and low water levels in medieval Hungary (and Croatia) I: The great droughts of 1362, 1474, 1479, 1494 and 1507. Journal of Environmental Geography 8/1-2 (2015): 11-22

In the present paper five significant late medieval drought events, occurred in Hungary (4 cases) and Croatia (1 Dalmatian case), are discussed based on contemporary documentary evidence. Information on long-term lack of precipitation, severe annual (or multiannual) water shortage, extreme low water levels of major rivers or bad harvest and severe food shortage in 1362, 1474, 1479, 1494 and 1507, often accompanied or followed by locust invasions, were documented both in narratives, account books, charters and letters. Apart from causing food shortage or difficulties in transportation (e.g. of salt), these greatest known documented drought events of medieval Hungary were blamed for weakening the country's military defence (e.g. low water-levels) and providing good opportunities for Ottoman-Turkish attacks. These great drought events sometimes occurred one year later than those of the neighbouring areas in Central Europe – a fact that can be probably explained by the bi- or multi-annual nature of dry spells (e.g. in and around 1474, 1479, 1507) that does not necessarily fit the frame of a calendar year.

Climate Change during and after the Roman Empire: Reconstructing the Past from Scientific and Historical Evidence

Growing scientific evidence from modern climate science is loaded with implications for the environmental history of the Roman Empire and its successor societies. The written and archaeological evidence, although richer than commonly realized, is unevenly distributed over time and space. A first synthesis of what the written records and multiple natural archives (multi-proxy data) indicate about climate change and variability across western Eurasia from c. 100 b.c. to 800 a.d. confirms that the Roman Empire rose during a period of stable and favorable climatic conditions, which deteriorated during the Empire's third-century crisis. A second, briefer period of favorable conditions coincided with the Empire's recovery in the fourth century; regional differences in climate conditions parallel the diverging fates of the eastern and western Empires in subsequent centuries. Extreme droughts and human responses to them: the Czech Lands in the pre-instrumental period

The Czech Lands are particularly rich in documentary sources that help elucidate droughts in the pre-instrumental period (12th-18th centuries), together with descriptions of human responses to 15 them. Although droughts appear less frequently before AD 1501, the documentary evidence has enabled the creation of series of seasonal and summer half-year drought indices (SPI, SPEI and Zindex) for the Czech Lands for the 1501-2017 period. Based on calculation of return period for series of drought indices, extreme droughts were selected for inclusion herein if all three indices indicated a return period of ≥20 years. For further analysis, only those from the pre-instrumental period (before 20 AD 1804) were used. The extreme droughts selected are characterised by significantly lower values of drought indices, higher temperatures and lower precipitation totals compared to other years. The sealevel pressure patterns typically associated with extreme droughts include significantly higher pressure over Europe and significantly lower pressure over parts of the Atlantic Ocean. Extreme droughts with a return period ≥50 years are described in detail on the basis of Czech documentary evidence. A number 25 of selected extreme droughts are reflected in other central European reconstructions derived from documentary data or tree-rings. Impacts on social life and responses to extreme droughts are summarised; analysis of fluctuations in grain prices with respect to drought receives particular attention. Finally, extreme droughts from the pre-instrumental and instrumental periods are discussed. 30 1 Introduction Droughts and floods constitute two extreme aspects of the water cycle. However, while floods are typified by sudden onset, loss of human lives and immediate material damage, the onset of droughts is much slower, without direct loss of human lives and result more a chronologically extended range of impacts, especially on agriculture (agricultural drought), water resources (hydrological and 35 underground water droughts), and usually with more delay in their broader socioeconomic consequences (socio-economic droughts). Over the past decade, several publications, amongst which most prominently the monograph published by Kyle Harper in 2017, have argued that climate change was a determining factor in the rise and decline of the Roman Empire. This article offers a critique of these studies, observing that they lack a clear analytical model and misleadingly represent climate change as consisting of uniform climatic eras, ignoring chronological and geographical variability. Moreover, it is argued that both the biology of arable crops and the societal aspects of agriculture offer a wide scope for adaptation. Furthermore, Roman politics or warfare in the third and fourth century do not show an increased weakness of the food supply, nor did the Nile floods have a major impact on events outside Egypt. Regional case-studies show that changes in landscape and settlement patterns are more often caused by societal developments than by climatic factors. Finally, the economic and demographic decline in the western half of the empire in the third and fourth century (while North Africa and the East continued to prosper) is linked to the declining ability of political and societal mechanisms to deal with ever-present harvest shocks. While climate change is not denied, societal factors are argued to have had a far greater impact on the fate of the Roman Empire. "We historians are extremely uncomfortable with the idea that natural forces in some way circumscribe human agency. Fearful of being labeled 'environmental determinists,' we opt for a model of change in which all of the significant causal agents in historical processes are internal-or endogenous-to human culture, society, and economy."

When this journal pioneered the study of history and climate in 1979, the questions quickly outstripped contemporary science and history. Today climate science uses a formidable and expanding array of new methods to measure pre-modern environments, and to open the way to exploring how environments shaped the human experience—and vice versa—in contexts as different as the Little Ice Age and the Maya collapse. But these new methods are diverse, complex, and highly technical. The natural-scientific literature seemingly or actually offers contradictory claims or draws sweeping historical inferences from slender evidence; alarmed historians and archaeologists understandably struggle with evaluating highly technical scientific analyses and methods, sometimes failing to understand them at an elementary level. Climate and history impose an interdisciplinary approach. This article continues that earlier exploration by testing hypotheses concerning the rise and fall of Rome.

This manuscript is a general approach to study of drougths in historical dimension, using a large database. Different indices are implemented with overlapping to instrumental data period with more complete indices availability. Historical dimension of drought is faced with a correct approach, considering it’s a complex phenomena not easy to identify and evaluate in historical time, where not all information already is available for researchers. The present article deals with the reconstruction of drought time series in Germany since 1500. The reconstructions are based on historical records from the virtual research environment tambora.org and official instrumental records. The historical records and recent data were related with each other via modern indices calculations, drought categories and their historical equivalents. Historical and modern written documents are also taken into account to analyse the climatic effects and consequences on environment and society. These pathways of effects are derived and combined with different drought categories. The derived Historical Precipitation Index (HPI) is correlated with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Finally, a Historical Drought Index (HDI) and a Historical Wet Index (HWI) are derived from the basic monthly hygric indices (PI) since 1500.
