Teaching cultural awareness through the Arts
Abstract
The present article proposes the application of transformative learning theory through the technique of Visible Thinking as a means of dealing with the issue of developing students' critical thinking and cultural awareness in the foreign language classroom. The method is based on the process of close observation and analysis of an art work by the students with the objective of deriving conclusions that will alter biased or distorted views on serious cultural issues. The results of the application of the process are encouraging and suggest that the aesthetic experience of understanding and interpreting an art work can affect students' ideas and cultural beliefs.
