Abstract
In our response to the reviews of our book we focus on five points of criticism: the presumed lack of a central question and an overall explanatory framework; the argument that the work is not a synthesis; the problem of the interplay between supply of and demand for mental health care; the relation between the perspective of mental health experts and our interpretation of it in terms of cultural pessimism as well as social design and the objection that our elaboration of the process of psychologization remains unclear. We emphasize that we do indeed present a definition of a central problem in the introduction and that we discuss it extensively and systematically in our conclusion. We also explain what in our view a historical synthesis should aim at and that our approach is empirical-historical rather than theoretical-sociological. We believe that we keep aloof from the actor's perspective at that time and that the criticism of our description of psychologization is based on a limited understanding of that term.

- Marijke Gijswijt-Hofstra (1940) is emeritus hoogleraar Sociale en Culturele Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Haar onderzoeksgebieden waren: de geschiedenis van asielverlening, toverij, afwijking en (in)tolerantie, homeopathie, psychiatrie en GGZ. Zij redigeerde onder andere Psychiatric Cultures Compared. Psychiatry and Mental Health Care in the Twentieth Century (samen met Harry Oosterhuis, Joost Vijselaar en Hugh Freeman) (Amsterdam 2005); Cultures of Child Health in Britain and the Netherlands in the Twentieth Century (samen met Hilary Marland) (Amsterdam en New York 2003).
