Natural gas has emerged as the most preferred fuel due to its inherent environmentally benign nature, greater efficiency and cost effectiveness. The demand of natural gas has sharply increased in the last two decades at the global level. In India too, the natural gas sector has gained importance, particularly over the last decade, and is being termed as the Fuel of the 21st Century. 1 Domestic production is likely to double by 2012.

The UN introduced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 under 17 indivisible goals and 169 targets. These goals give a comprehensive attitude in addressing the issues of society, environment, and economy. The Oil and Gas (O&G) industry is a major contributor to the overall GDP of India. India is a net crude oil importer and has good refining capacities. In general, the O&G industry can contribute to all 17 SDGs. However, most industries focus on certain goals that are in alliance with their company. This paper gives a quantitative content analysis about the involvement of the major 5 Indian O&G industries involvement in sustainability. The frequency of projects and policies by each industry toward Sustainable Development Goals are computed. From analysis, it is concluded that these 5 Indian firms largely concentrate on Goals 12 and 13. The role of natural gas in enriching and improving the quality of life on earth has assumed central and critical importance. All sustainable "development goals enunciated by the UNO to create an enduring equitable and progressive global economic order can be achieved if there is more and more shifting from others sources of energy to natural gas as a source of energy. Natural gas is a reliable, affordable, safe, clean and environment friendly source of energy. Our multiple problems related to gender equality, poor quality of education, social tension, health hazards unleashing of fatal diseases, economic disparity, catastrophic results in the wake of climate change, scarcity of potable water, toxicity of air to breathe, all these and many more issues can be satisfactorily resolved if significant transition from other sources of energy to natural gas as a resource of energy takes place. It is heartening that this kind of transition has already happened on a massive scale. The importance of the natural gas as a source of energy is being increasingly realized the world over. That is why the misuse of natural gas is considered a panacea to translate all SDOs into reality which will help mitigate all our socioeconomic disorders" and tensions. In areas "where natural gas is produced at oil wells but is not economical to transport for sale or contains high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (a toxic gas), it is burned (flared) at well sites. Natural gas flaring produces CO 2 , carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and many other compounds, depending on the chemical composition of the natural gas and on how well the natural gas burns in the flare. However, flaring is safer than releasing natural gas into the air and results in lower overall greenhouse gas emissions because CO 2 is not as strong a greenhouse gas as methane."

India's primary energy basket is heavily weight in favour of coal, oil and gas (92%) and balance 8% renewables, hydro and nuclear. The eco-friendly energy resources like natural gas and renewables (wind & solar) account only for 9% and 2%. The long term energy demand forecast also suggests contribution of coal, oil and gas to slide down to 87%. The Natural gas demand though on increase but the consumption is constrained due to limited domestic production and inadequacy of LNG import facilities. Considering the huge import bill on oil, gas and coal imports ($150 billion, Kelkar 2013) and the ever increasing concern for environment, the eco-friendly non-conventional resources as shale gas are getting preference. Ninety-five per cent of Indian households now have access to liquified petroleum gas (LPG), with 80 million acquiring it under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) since 2016. Still, having a connection is not enough to eliminate household air pollution. Studying panel data from rural households in six major states from 2014-2015 and 2018, we assess the determinants of cooking energy transition from solid fuels to LPG. We find that PMUY beneficiaries have much lower odds of using LPG as the primary or exclusive fuel compared with general customers, irrespective of their economic status. Village-level penetration of LPG as a primary fuel and the years of LPG use positively influence its sustained use, while ease of access to freely available biomass and reliance on uncertain and irregular income sources hinder LPG use. The findings highlight the need to interlace cooking fuel policies with rural development, to enable a complete transition towards cleaner cooking fuels. India is in the midst of the largest household energy transition to date, with about one hundred million households acquiring a liquified petroleum gas (LPG) connection since 2016 1. In 2011, three-fifths of Indian households-primarily in rural areas-relied on solid fuels to meet their daily cooking and heating needs 2 , resulting in substantial negative impacts on health 3 , the economy 4 and the environment 5. Natural Gas is one of the important fossil fuel energy resources in India. Anchor customers of natural gas are the power sector and nitrogenous fertilizer. It is the cleanest form of energy derived from the fossil fuel basket. Because of clean combustion characteristics, natural gas is the fuel choice for many sections of Indian industry. The demand for natural gas will grow with time. Currently natural gas accounts for 7% of the primary energy consumption of India. The Government of India has its commitment to food security and energy security. The policies are directed toward greater allocation of natural gas on a priority basis to fertilizer and the power sector. Natural gas is the main and preferred feedstock for urea manufacture. This paper analyzes and estimates projected demand of natural gas in the next two decades. The demand projections have been reviewed in the context of changing government policies regarding the fertilizer industry, such as farm gate price regulation and self-sufficiency level of indigenous urea production. The current growth plan of natural gas supply and evolving supply scenario in the future are also considered in the study.

Nigeria is increasingly a hub centre for natural gas with sustainable economic growth and development in addition to the prospect of sustained environmental benefits. The environmentally friendly, cost effective and cleanliness aspect of natural gas makes it the first choice for energy users. Thus, this paper identified environmental, social and economic, wealth creation, employment generation and sustainable development as some fundamental benefits of natural gas development. While there are some invaluable opportunities from natural gas, however, there appear some obstacles. The paper revealed that obstacles are deeply rooted in dearth of gas gathering and distribution infrastructure, fiscal and regulatory policy, funding, and more importantly, the prevailing security situation in the main gas supply source, the Niger Delta region.
