The Database of Turkish Newspaper's Maps

The paper describes Internet information sources divided into following three groups: bibliographic databases, citation databases and databases with full texts including electronic journals. Bibliographic databases Bibliographia Cartographica, GEOPHOKA, Scopus and Current Contents (CC) are analyzed concerning cartographic content representation. Searching the Current Contents database resulted in data about cartographers with more than 10 papers in CC journals. According to the Web of Science citation database, data are given about the most cited cartographers in papers published during the period between 1955 and the end of 2008 on the condition that each paper was cited at least once between 2000 and 2008. Data are also given about two most cited cartographic papers in the last 50 years. The PERO browser (web service of the Ruđer Bošković Institute) was used to make a list of cartographic and related electronic journals and electronic versions of printed journals with full text avaiable to Croatian academic and scientic community.

Maps have a thorough and indispensable role as one of the basis of our civilization. The majority of human activities connected with space can hardly be realized without adequate cartographic presentations. In the past, many people who had any contact with maps were only users. Today, however, especially with larger and larger possibilities of interactivity on web, so called democratisation of cartography encourages larger and larger number of people to use their cartographic possibilities to full extent. The paper reminds of greater and greater importance of the data obtained by means of remote sensing in the production of various cartographic presentations. It also refers to the present situation in the production of paper and multimedia (electronic) maps and to the importance of GPS, GIS, Internet and LBS (Location Based Services) in modern cartography.

Developments in media communication: can cartography became an instrument of power when transmitting messages? Abstract The intent of this paper is to explore how power works through maps, informing how they are made, read, and otherwise used. The growing space that is given to the maps in the mass media is leading increasingly the need to investigate the maps as a vehicle, not naive, of information. The media are investing more and more on cartographic representations with the purpose to follow and show the events that affect today's societies: with the monitoring of the news " they " can anticipate and understand the evolving challenges and represent it. For example: Le Monde devotes more space to mapping, which could be defined " geopolitics ". Le Figaro is giving more and more space to infography, reducing the space devoted to the texts for leave it to the cartographic representations. Also The New York Times is surround of the best graphic designers as did the Guardian. Developments in the use and dissemination of cartography require a new critical view of maps as communication tool. Two works by Denis Wood and Jeremy Crampton investigates how the power (policy, editorial…) " speaks " through the maps. Harley and Woodward also said that we need to study the maps as a language, not only as geometrical measurements or a geographic grid, neither as a linear or simple projection. Maps are not only what they represent, but they are much more: geographic representations are the product of economic and social history, and they must be studied in relation to that context.

This report focuses on the growing interest in the relationship between maps, narratives and metanarratives. Following a brief historical contextualization of these relationships, this report explores their current state in the Geoweb era. Using the distinction between story maps and grid maps as an analytical framework, I review emerging issues around the extensive use of technologies and online mapping services (i.e. Google maps) to convey stories and to produce new ones. Drawing on literature in film studies, literary studies, visual arts, computer science and communication, I also emphasize the emergence of new forms of spatial expressions interested in providing different perspectives about places and about stories associated to places. In sum, I argue that mapping both vernacular knowledge and fiction is central to understanding places in depth.

This article summarizes the Special Issue of “Multimedia Cartography”. We present three main research fields in which multimedia cartography and the study of the effectiveness of multimedia maps are currently taking place. In each of these fields, we describe how published research is embedded in the broader context of map design and user studies. The research refers to contemporary technological trends such as web HTML5 standards, virtual reality, eye tracking, or 3D printing. Efficiency, performance, and usability studies of multimedia maps were also included. The research published in this issue is interdisciplinary. They combine traditional mapping methods with new technologies. They are searching for new places for cartography in, e.g., the environment of computer games. They combine the design of the map with its perception by users.

Most of us encounter a map, or some sort of cartographic device, on nearly a daily basis. This is true whether or not we are conscious of the occurrence. We may be planning or imagining our travels, or conceptualizing a project, but we somehow interact with the map, whether written or visual. When we read an heroic novel, we track the journey. When we hear the news of wars or weather, the map functions as a communicator and guide. The purpose of this essay is to give an overview of map uses, but not strictly from the vantage of the individual use or user. The producer of the map -- whether an individual or group, whether a financier or artisan -- is at the center of this conversation. The producer will likely have planned uses for a map, and may themselves be a user, but without their construct the map does not exist.
