This paper reports on the modular architecture for natural language parsing and generation that is a consequence of using Lexical Functional Grammar as the linguistic framework in the context of the ParGram (Parallel Grammar) project. In particular, we discuss the following modules: the tokenizer and morphological analyzer, the syntax as implemented in the grammar development platform XLE [1] and the semantics, which is effected through rewrite rules. We also briefly touch upon the ability to allow for extra projections, such as the prosodic projection. Overall, Lexical-Functional Grammar in conjunction with the XLE development platform allows not only for robust and large-scale natural language parsing and generation, but also for the incorporation of deep linguistic insights.

IJERT-Translating from Universal Networking Language into Persian Language

The intermediate language used is Universal Networking Language which has been developed by the University of United Nations in Tokyo. We have provided software and a set of rules to convert from this Interlingua into Persian language which we'll discuss here. An important facet of the work is preparing a categorization of Persian language sentences. Implementation of this translator involves creating a special type of Persian-UNL dictionary of words, providing grammatical rules of Persian Language and finally suggesting a routine for converting UNL sentences into their Persian equivalent. We show that using this method, translation from other languages into Persian can be improved dramatically.

A Study of Corpus Development for Persian

Persian is one of the Indo-European languages which has borrowed its script from Arabic, a member of Semitic language family. Since Persian and Arabic scripts are so similar, problems arise when we want to process an electronic text. In this paper, some of the common problems faced experimentally in developing a corpus for Persian are discussed. The sources of the problems are the Persian script itself; mixture with the Arabic script; Persian orthography; the typists' typing styles; and mixing Persian code pages with Arabic in the operating systems; linguistic style and creativity in the language.

Bootstrapping the Development of an HPSG-based Treebank for Persian

In this paper, we describe an ongoing research to develop an HPSG- based treebank for Persian. To this aim, we use a bootstrapping ap- proach for the data annotation. In the first step, a set of seed rules are defined as regular expressions in the CLaRK system. Then, the data is shallow processed with this set of rules. In the next step, a human annotator completes the annotation of sentences manually. To increase automatic annotation, we extract the manual applied rules and iteratively augment the seed rules with the rules applied frequently in the manual annotation. Our experiment in building the Persian tree-bank which currently contains 1000 sentences shows that the proposed method reduces human intervention from 74.05% in first iterations to 39.01% in last iterations.

Rapid Development of Translation Tools: Application to Persian and Turkish

An HPSG-based generator for German

In order to extract rigid expressions with a high frequency of use, new algorithm that can efficiently extract both uninterrupted and interrupted collocations from very large corpora has been proposed. The statistical method recently proposed for calculating N-gram of m'bitrary N can be applied to the extraction of uninterrupted collocations. But this method posed problems that so large volumes of fractional and unnecessary expressions are extracted that it was impossible to extract interrupted collocations combining the results. To solve this problem, this paper proposed a new algorithm that restrains extraction of unnecessary substrings. This is followed by the proposal of a method that enable to extract interrupted collocations. The new methods are applied to Japanese newspaper articles involving 8.92 million characters. In the case of uninterrupted collocations with string length of 2 or mere characters and frequency of appearance 2 or more times, there were 4.4 millions types of expressions (total frequency of 31.2 millions times) extracted by the N-gram method. In contrast, the new method has reduced this to 0.97 million types (total frequency of 2.6 million times) revealing a substantial reduction in fractional and unnecessary expressions. In the case of interrupted collocational substring extraction, combining the substring with frequency of 10 times or more extracted by the first method, 6.5 thousand types of pairs of substrings with the total frequency of 21.8 thousands were extracted.

In this paper, we present our attempts to design and implement a largecoverage computational grammar for the Persian language based on the Generalized Phrase Structured Grammar (GPSG) model. This grammatical model was developed for continuous speech recognition (CSR) applications, but is suitable for other applications that need the syntactic analysis of Persian. In this work, we investigate various syntactic structures relevant to the modern Persian language, and then describe these structures according to a phrase structure model. Noun (N), Verb (V), Adjective (ADJ), Adverb (ADV), and Preposition (P) are considered basic syntactic categories, and X-bar theory is used to define Noun phrases, Verb phrases, Adjective phrases, Adverbial phrases, and Prepositional phrases. However, we have to extend Noun phrase levels in X-bar theory to four levels due to certain complexities in the structure of Noun phrases in the Persian language. A set of 120 grammatical rules for describing different phrase structures of Persian is extracted, and a few instances of the rules are presented in this paper. These rules cover the major syntactic structures of the modern Persian language. For evaluation, the obtained grammatical model is utilized in a bottom-up chart parser for parsing 100 Persian sentences. Our grammatical model can take 89 sentences into account. Incorporating this grammar in a Persian CSR system leads to a 31% reduction in word error rate.

The First Parallel Multilingual Corpus of Persian: Toward a Persian BLARK

In this article, we have introduced the first parallel corpus of Persian with more than 10 other European languages. This article describes primary steps toward preparing a Basic Language Resources Kit (BLARK) for Persian. Up to now, we have proposed morphosyntactic specification of Persian based on EAGLE/MULTEXT guidelines and specific resources of MULTEXT-East. The article introduces Persian Language, with emphasis on its orthography and morphosyntactic features, then a new Part-of-Speech categorization and orthography for Persian in digital environments is proposed. Finally, the corpus and related statistic will be analyzed. With the expansion of information and communication technology, the need for HLT also increases. In order for people to use their native language in these applications, a set of basic provisions (such as tools, corpora, and lexicons) is required. Since now, there have been lots of efforts toward preparing Basic Language Resources Kit for language processing, particularly languages that are commercially less considered. The outcomes of such efforts are corpora, morphological analyzer etc., which are freely available for train and research purposes. [1] As to Persian, or Farsi, unfortunately there has been little work in this area, or at least these efforts have not reached that ultimate goal, preparing Persian BLARK. [2] Moreover, these works have not been done based on certain specific frameworks or standards which can be extended. Last but not the least, is that even these resources are not easily accessible for research or training programs. In our previous work [3], we reported the first steps towards preparing a BLARK for Persian. This comprises of an introduction to the orthography of Persian in digital media (A convention for representing Persian e-text, especially for Persian Corpora) and its encoding, introducing Persian Part of Speeches (PoSs), morphosyntactic specification of Persian according to EAGLE/MULTEXT guidelines and proposed standards in MULTEXT-East. The MULTEXT-East project was a branch of the EU MULTEXT [5] project. It developed standardized language resources for six languages such as Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovene, as well as English, the 'hub' language of the project. The main result of the project was an annotated multilingual corpus, comprising a speech corpus, a comparable corpus and a parallel corpus, together with lexical resources, and tool resources for these seven languages. The most useful part of the MULTEXT-East project was the morphosyntactic resources which consist of three layers, listed in order of abstraction as follows: • 1. 1984 MSD: the morphosyntactically annotated Orwell's 1984 corpus, in which each word is assigned its context-disambiguated MSD and lemma. • 2. MSD Lexicons: the morphosyntactic lexicons, which contain the full inflectional paradigms of a superset of the lemmas that appear in the 1984 corpus. Each entry gives the word-form, its lemma and MSD. • 3. MSD Specs: the morphosyntactic specifications, which set out the grammar of the valid morphosyntactic descriptions, MSDs. The specifications determine what valid MSD for each language is, and what it may mean, e.g., " Ncms " means PoS: Noun, Type: common, Gender: masculine, Number: singular. In this way, MULTEXT-East provides a comprehensive framework for corpus development. Also, there are lots of resources according to this framework, e.g. '1984 MSD' for several languages. On the other hand, 1984 is available in Persian and in return Persian as an Indo-European language, can be placed with this framework as we showed in our previous work. In our previous work, we discussed related issues like Persian orthography and its encoding in digital media (e-orthography), the morphosyntactic specifications of Persian, and finally interaction of these elements and the effects of these definitions in the process of computational analysis of the language.
