Abstract

Emotional disturbances are central to diverse psychopathologies. In this article, we argue that the functions of emotion are comparable for persons with and without psychopathology. However, impairment in one or more components of emotional processing disrupts the achievement of adaptive emotion functions. Adopting a theoretical conceptualisation of emotional processes that stresses activity in centrally mediated approach and withdrawal systems, we discuss the role of emotion in several forms of psychopathology, including major depression, some of the anxiety disorders, psychopathy, and schizophrenia. In doing so, we highlight the nature of emotion disturbance and attendant behavioural and cognitive de® cits. F inally, we discuss the merits of this approach for conceptualising emotional disturbance in psychopathology.

Emotions play big role in man’s life. Every illness is accompanied by emotions. Therefore, it is of big interest to elucidate further the role of emotions in one’s life. Today, affective neuroscience, psychology and philosophy of emotions deal with such issues. In the current article, I discuss the modern theories of emotions (philosophy of emotions) as well as the neural correlates of emotions (affective neuroscience). Finally, I present two psychotherapeutic approaches to treat emotional disturbances and disorders as well as two mental illnesses in which emotional disturbances are main symptoms.

Role of Emotion Regulation in Psychopathology

The associations between emotional skills encompassed in emotion regulation model and psychopathology were examined by investigating its ability to modify the emotionmediated association between other emotion regulation skills and psychopathology. Methods: A total of 465 students were selected using proposal sampling method. Data were collected using Emotion Regulation Skill Questionnaire (ERSQ) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Data were analyzed using bootstrapping-enhanced mediation analysis that considered the ability to modify emotions as a mediator, psychopathology as dependent, and other emotional skill as independent and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: A significant negative correlation was established between emotional skills and psychopathology in a range from 0.13 (bodily perception of sensations) to 0.31 (modification) (ρ=-0.31, P˂0.01). The total effect for the variables of clarity, understanding, acceptance and tolerance, confrontation, self-support, attention, and sensation was significant at P<0.05, thereby rendering the mediation analysis plausible. The indirect effect of all variables was also significant. Therefore, all the variables have partial mediating effects. The direct effect of the variable of attention, sensation, and understanding on the psychological disturbances was not significant (P>0.05), and modification between these three skills and psychopathology exerted a complete mediating effect. The direct impact of emotional clarity, acceptance and tolerance, confrontation, and self-support was significant. Thus, emotion modification between the skills of emotional clarity, acceptance and tolerance, confrontation, and self-support with psychological disturbance had partial mediating effects. Discussion: The ability to modify emotions is the pathway through which other emotional skills might exert their influence on the mental health.

Emotion processing deficits: A liability spectrum providing insight into comorbidity of mental disorders

Epidemiological studies have revealed that mental disorders are highly comorbid; almost half of the people with a mental disorder also meet the criteria of another disorder. The explanation of this high comorbidity has remained a scientific puzzle. We propose 'disrupted emotion processing' as a liability spectrum that underlies many different mental disorders. Emotion processing deficits have been reported in different disorders and result in difficulties in regulating emotions and at the perceptual level in attentional biases and impaired recognition of emotional expressions. This article provides a detailed overview of the literature on disrupted emotion processing in clinical groups on the behavioral and neurological level. In the discussion, the similarities and differences between these disorders are discussed in the context of common neuro-endocrine, genetic and environmental factors and ideas are put forward on how future research may advance. Most importantly, more interdisciplinary research is needed in which different techniques, tasks and clinical populations are combined to get a better understanding of disrupted emotion processing as a liability spectrum underlying various different mental disorders.

I Neuropsychology of Emotion and Emotional Disorders: An Overview and Research Directions

In the past 25 years, the study of neural mechanisms involved in emotional processing has flourished, although findings in this area emanate from the end of the nineteenth century. By emotion, we refer to reactions to an appropriately evocative stimulus involving cognitive appraisal (or perception), expressive motoric behavior, subjective experience (or feelings), physiological arousal, and goal-directed behavior . Researchers have identified numerous neuroanatomical structures and neurophysiological systems that modulate emotion at cortical, subcortical, and limbic levels of the nervous system. From a neuropsychological perspective, a range of theories has been proposed to account for cerebral hemispheric specialization of emotion (e.g., right hemisphere, valence, and motoric-direction hypotheses) and for componential and modular processing. Evidence for these various theories stems from both clinical observation and experimental studies, involving normal, neurological, and psychiatric populations. Experimental studies have employed a variety of methodologies, including behavioral paradigms, the natural lesion method, neurosurgical procedures, electrophysiological techniques, and hemodynamic neuroimaging. In addition to delineating brain mechanisms involved in aspects of emotional processing, this growing body of research has wide-ranging clinical implications for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of neuropsychiatric populations suffering from deficits in emotional processing.

Emotion is central to being human. It has been the focus of study in one way or another for thousands of years; however, after some early attention in psychology (James, 1890; McDougall, 1926), it largely was ignored by early therapeutic pioneers (e.g., Freud, 1896/1961; Skinner, 1974). Art and literature have repeatedly made use of emotion: For example, poetry and music evoke strong emotion and increase our appreciation of emotion as central to the human experience (Frost, 1934; Juslin & Sloboda, 2013). The established opinion is that emotions are the gift given to us by nature in order to help us connect with other people. They are constantly generated, usually by stimuli in our intrapersonal as well as in external world. Problems raised in our relationships initiate emotions to help us to fix those problems. Almost all forms of human psychopathology are associated with dysregulated emotions. The failure to apply appropriate cognitive, attentive, and behavioural regulatory strategies is the core for emotion dysregulation. The brain regulates emotions through a biological mechanism. Emotions rise in intensity, peak, and then go flat once the emotion adaptive action tendency has been expressed. The aim of the therapist is to help clients express, face, and regulate their emotions, and to channel these emotions into healthy actions. The idea of this article is to present contributions from both affective neuroscience and psychotherapy in order to explain the ways how our emotions become dysregulated in life and how they can become regulated through psychotherapy.

Emotional processes are crucial to the control of human behaviour and anchored to a common foundation in motivational mechanisms where emotional cues have intrinsic reinforcement values. Emotions per se are transient events, produced in response to external or self-generated emotive stimuli, and typically characterized by attention to the stimulus, involuntary arousal reactions and changes in motor behaviour, subjective feeling states and subsequent biasing of behaviour. Primary emotions, such as happiness and fear, correspond motivationally with approach or withdrawal responses. In humans, feeling-states and subjective emotional experiences reflect cognitive contextual awareness of emotional responses and may be embellished into secondary emotions, such as guilt or relief. This review addresses the application of neuroimaging techniques to understanding the neural mechanisms supporting these aspects of emotional experience.

Emotion and mood are deceptively simple concepts. It is easy to study emotions, intervene with clients suffering from emotional disorders, or teach related course content without adequately examining the basic tenets of what they are and how they operate in different contexts. For centuries, philosophers and scientists have tried to create exact definitions of emotion, and the result is that there is no single accepted definition. The definitions found in encyclopedias and dictionaries are general and vague and thus serve little purpose. At the core, emotion is often defined as a coordinated response to stimuli at experiential, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels of analysis (e.g., see Levenson, 1994). Yet, a lack of coherence among systems is quite common.
