A Review on Wireless Sensor Network

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is the current research field in computer science & has growing use in day to day life. As a new technology, it has several research challenges and vast opportunities for the researchers. This paper highlights WSN, its architecture, challenges, applications and classification of various protocols concerning it. It also classifies various security protocols to make WSN a secure network.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consist of tiny sensor nodes scattered on a relatively large geographical area. The nodes are cooperative in nature, that is, they can communication with one another or to a central control unit. The work of each such node is to collect the information from surrounding like pressure, temperature, humidity, magnetic fields, optical fields etc [2]. Actually they are ad hoc network with some additional constraints. The node should be capable enough for power consumption, collection of data, self healing, mobility, self configuration to name a few. These features of WSN node differentiate it from conventional ad hoc networks [14]. This survey paper aims at reporting wireless sensor network, its design, networking of nodes, and security in system. In this paper, fundamentals of wireless sensor network are discussed. Different component like sensor, microcontroller, battery require for sensor networks are explained in detail. We have tried to include all the aspects of WSN. The Protocols, Operating Systems, tools require for WSN node programming and some security issues are also discussed.

The history of sensor network technology originates in the first distributed sensing idea implementations. The continuous work of researchers and engineers over sensor networks which lately became wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Wireless sensor network is one of the g r o w i n g technology for sensing and performing the different tasks. Such networks are beneficial in many fields, such as emergencies, health monitoring, environmental control, military, industries and these networks prone to malicious users' and physical attacks due to radio range of network, un-trusted transmission, unattended nature and get access easily. Security is a fundamental requirement for these networks. In this paper, our center of attention is on physical attacks and issues in wireless sensor networks. Through this review, easily identify the purpose and capabilities of the attackers. Further, we discuss well-known approaches of security detection against physical attacks. Wireless Sensor Network over the years have become one of the most promising networking solutions with exciting new application for the near, future. Its deployment has been enhanced by its small, expensive and smart sensor nodes, which are easily deployed, depending on its application and coverage area. In this paper we focus on the Common to special application of wireless sensor network in various domain uses for military operation, monitoring environmental condition, distribution control systems, health care, industrial monitoring and detection of radioactive sources. Not with standing its promising attributes, security in WSN is a big challenge and remains an ongoing research trends. Furthermore the sensor nodes in WSNs are characterized by their resources constraints such as limited power, low bandwidth, short communication range, limited processing, and storage capacity which have made the sensor nodes an easy target. Therefore, in this paper, we present the uses of security aspects of Wireless Sensor Network but we focus on Home Automation, Military Operations, Monitoring Environmental condition like as monitor temperature, pressure, humidity etc.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is a recent advanced technology of computer networks and electronics. The WSN increasingly becoming more practicable solution to many challenging applications. The sensor networks depend upon the sensed data, which may depend upon the application. One of the major applications of the sensor networks is in military. So security is the greatest concern to deploy sensor network such hostile unattended environments, monitoring real world applications. But the limitations and inherent constraints of the sensor nodes does not support the existing traditional security mechanisms in WSN. Now the present research is mainly concentrated on providing security mechanism in sensor networks. In this context, security aspects of the sensor networks like requirements, classifications, and type of attacks etc., is analyzed in this survey paper.

This thesis explores security issues in wireless sensor networks security (WSNs), it is vital that the Sensor network technologies involved become sufficiently mature and robust against Malicious attack to be trustworthy. The inclusion of wireless communication technology also incurs various types of security threats. The intent of this paper is to investigate the security related issues, the challenges and to propose some solutions to secure the WSN against these security threats. While the set of challenges in sensor networks are diverse, this paper focus only on the challenges related to the security of Wireless Sensor Network. This paper begins by introducing the concept of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The introductory section gives brief information on the WSN components and its architecture. Then it deals with some of the major security issues over wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper also proposes some of the security goal for Wireless Sensor Network. Further, as security being vital to the acceptance and use of sensor networks for many applications; I have made an in depth threat analysis of Wireless Sensor Network. Lastly it proposes some security mechanisms against these threats in Wireless Sensor Network.

—Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are formed by deploying as large number of sensor nodes in an area for the surveillance of generally remote locations. A typical sensor node is made up of different components to perform the task of sensing, processing and transmitting data. WSNs are used for many applications in diverse forms from indoor deployment to outdoor deployment. The basic requirement of every application is to use the secured network. Providing security to the sensor network is a very challenging issue along with saving its energy. Many security threats may affect the functioning of these networks. WSNs must be secured to keep an attacker from hindering the delivery of sensor information and from forging sensor information as these networks are build for remote surveillance and unauthorized changes in the sensed data may lead to wrong information to the decision makers. This paper gives brief description about various security issues and security threats in WSNs.
