The internet of things: mapping the value beyond the hype

Living beyond the hype, the Internet of things (IoT) continues to grow and has clearly emerged as a leading-edge topic in information systems. As the IoT moves beyond novel technologies and exploratory sandbox initiatives to ubiquitous technologies and full production, understanding the phenomenon surrounding IoT challenges and issues has become even more important. In this paper, we explore the critical issues and challenges currently facing IoT adoption and implementation in order to identify areas that require further study. Specifically, we discuss IoT from several key perspectives including IoT connectivity, platforms and 5G, IoT analytics, IoT privacy, security, and litigation risks, IoT business value and monetization, and human interaction with IoT and design considerations Finally, through identifying the current state of IoT and IoT research, we identify potential areas of contribution and future directions for IoT research.

Internet of Things (IoT) encompasses a wide range of devices and technologies which cumulatively shape a new environment with unprecedented business prospects. This paper aims to investigate the business potential of the IoT, examining the opportunities it offers as well as the challenges it creates for current and future business models. In this direction, the paper presents a proposed framework for analyzing IoT business models into dimensions that can facilitate our understanding of their development and success. The paper also denotes factors that can affect the success of IoT business models, focusing on security, privacy, trust, legal and economic aspects of IoT. The paper continues to show the business applicability of IoT through the case of RAWFIE project, describing example application scenarios of mobile IoT in selected domains and analysing its business potential.

Background. The dynamics of changes at the beginning of the 21st century create a new dimension of the economy based on information and knowledge. The Internet of Things, hyper-connectivity, large data sets, cloud solutions, automation, and robotisation permeate more and more areas of economic existence. The boundaries between what is physical and what is digital are blurring, making the existing ways of managing business processes likely to be insufficient, of which not all entrepreneurs are aware.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as an integrated set of digital innovations with the potential to unleash unprecedented opportunities as well as to create significant challenges from both technological and societal perspectives. The emergence of IoT heralds a new dimension of a digital era with impact and influence that are not yet fully clear. This signals the opening of valuable opportunities for scholarly inquiries, particularly for information systems (IS) scholars. We posit that, as the IS discipline sits at the intersection of technical, business, and social applications of IT, which are also the essential dimensions of the impact of IoT, IS scholars are well positioned to understand and contribute to advancing research on this new topic and associated phenomena. This paper outlines the distinctive attributes of IoT and their implications for existing traditions of IS research. It further highlights some illustrative research perspectives from which IoT can be studied by IS scholars. We highlight a research agenda for IS in two different ways: first, by suggesting four categories of implications on IS research: (1) introduction of the physio-digital continuum; (2) multi-level exploration of IS; (3) composite affordances; and (4) heterogeneity; and second, by introducing four thematic impact domains: (1) impact on organizations; (2) impact on technology; (3) impact on individuals; and (4) impact on society.

Purpose– The Internet of Things (IoT) represents the network connection of people, processes, data and things. Due to the relevant position that this intelligent infrastructure is acquiring, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of IoT on the companies’ value, with specific reference to the intellectual capital value.Design/methodology/approach– The methodology is based on a single case study approach with an empirical analysis which aims to analyse whether and how the introduction of the IoT’ innovations influences the value of the intellectual capital owned by a company. The primary objective of this research is to identify and analyze all the issues and challenges associated with the Internet-of-Things in the context of business management. The paper develops an exploratory research model to identify and analyze all the issues and challenges associated with the Internet-of-Things in business administration. The researcher gathered all the relevant data and information with the help of a previous literature review recently published on the Internet-of-Things and business management. To compile relevant content on the subject, the researcher used secondary resources such as Internet sites, the official website of organizations that have adopted the Internet-of-Things for management, published research papers, peer-reviewed journals, magazines, periodical articles, and books. This research study will aid researchers and management in developing a unique security framework to minimize and eliminate security and privacy risks and the adoption of the Internet-of-Things using new communication tools and technologies in business management practices. In the last decade, the internet has become an everyday tool of people and organizations and, at the same time, indispensable to the proper functioning of business. With the growing increase in network infrastructures and mass popularization of the high-speed network, a breakthrough has emerged related to the use of the Internet, making it a global platform to allow intelligent machines and objects to communicate autonomously. This possibility allows content and services to be around people, always available, facilitating communication and opening the way for new applications; enabling new forms of work, interaction and entertainment; developing a new standard of living and work. This new standard is made possible by advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to a new concept defined as Internet of Things-IoT. This introductory article presents and discusses the main features that characterize the Internet of Things, its origin, theoretical visions and fields of application, exploring the possibilities of fomenting a discussion about the application of IoT.
