The goal of this document is to provide a synthesis of what is known about the drivers of HIV infection and an understanding of HIV prevention needs, opportunities, challenges and priorities-for South Africa (SA) in general and for the three provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Mpumalanga in particular. In keeping with the SHIPP focus, the emphasis is on sexual HIV prevention and the biological, social and structural factors that influence exposure to risk and adoption of HIV prevention methods. Methodology The sources of evidence are limited to published information, gathered through a comprehensive search for research and monitoring reports. Limited research and monitoring data has not in all cases allowed presentation of data at provincial level, but in most instances some data is available and this has been presented.
