When Atom Egoyan released his ninth feature fi lm, Ararat (2002), it caused heated debates in Turkey and elsewhere as a result of its subject matter: the massacres of Ottoman Armenians between 1915 and 1918. This article looks at the problematic reception of Ararat in Turkey, examining not only the fi lm itself but also the literature produced on the subject by journalists, opinion leaders, and academics. It argues that the offi cial discourse on the Armenian genocide in Turkey also shaped discussions about the fi lm in that country. ANI: Your father died accidently, he tripped and fell. . . . A new structural model based on the premises widely used for describing the structure of random materials, and especially aerogels, is introduced. Aerogels are described as an assemblage of randomly-packed spheres in several hierarchically-ordered levels. A new algorithm has been developed for constructing structural models from these premises using computer simulation. Subsequently, several techniques based both on the Monte Carlo technique and on geometrical considerations for characterizing real systems have been simulated, and textural parameters of the models have been obtained, including specific surface area, specific porous volume and the apparent density of the systems. This characterization process yields a set of parameters used for testing the capacity of the models to reproduce the structure of several real systems, like aerogels. Nowadays the sol-gel process is used by an increasing number of researchers for the preparation of various products, including bulk materials, films, membranes or fibers. The application of ultrasound (sonocatalysis) to the precursors gives rise to materials with new properties, known as sonogels. The absence of additional solvent and, mainly, the effects of ultrasonic cavitation create a unique environment for sol-gel reactions leading to particular features in the resulting gels: high density, fine texture, homogeneous structure etc. These properties determine the evolution of sonogels on further processing and the final material structure. In this sense, the full exploitation of sonocatalysis requires a thorough understanding of the processes involved and their sensitivity to reaction parameters. For this purpose, we have used diverse techniques to investigate the microstructural evolution during different steps in the sonogel process. The results of these studies are reported here. Finally, we present an overview of some applications for which the mechanical, textural and optical characteristics of sonogels are quite useful.

ZrO2 ceramic felts and low viscosity sols of cordierite were used to obtain ceramicceramic composites. Ultrasonic treatments were applied to prepare cordierite sol containing different quantities of nucleating TiO2. Sintering of the composites was accomplished by the hot-pressing of several infiltrated ZrO2 felt layers. Relative densities were around 99%. The reinforcing phase was distributed in an anisotropic way in the densified samples. The mechanical strength of the composites was influenced by the polymorphic form and microstructure of the matrix, and also by the matrix volume fraction introduced by infiltration.
