Club Guidelines for Awarding of Women's Blues

All sports will be reviewed 3 yearly, and the constitution likewise. Status changes from Full to Half or Half to Full can only occur after 3 consecutive varsity Matches and are probationary for 3 years (see constitution.)

All Blues are awarded at the Captain's discretion to members of the Varsity 1st team, subject to the six blues criteria.

Archery Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue 4 Awards maximum. Awarded to Varsity Team Members who achieve GNAS's 1st Class standard score. A Discretionary Full Blue may be applied for if the following criteria are met:
  1. Achieves a score of 860 or above at Varsity (Windsor Round) and/or a score of 1100 or above (FITA round) at the outdoor BUCS Competition.
  2. Achieves A top 10 placing at the indoor and/or outdoor BUCS Competition.

  1. Compete in the Blues team in the annual Varsity Match.
  2. Obtain a certain standard in their event in the season that they compete in the Varsity Match (see here).

Cricket Half Blue

Half Blues awarded to thoise who:

1. Play in the One Day Varsity Match, or the T20 Varsity Match, and

2. Have been selected to play 60% of BUCS league matches. “Selected” – due to weather.

Cross-Country Full/Half Blue 6 Awards maximum, awarded to runners who finish in the top 8 at the VM, with Captains discretion on the remaining places. Half Blues awarded to the rest. May 12 May 15
Cycling Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue

Road: Half Blues are awarded to the two fastest riders in the VM team.

Up to two Discretionary Full Blues subject to the following criteria: The rider should meet the Half Blue criteria and place top three in either the BUCS 10mi or 25mi time trial.

MTB: Half Blues are awarded to the three fastest riders in the VM, including both the Cambridge and Oxford riders, who additionally place either top five in BUCS XC or top five BUCS DH.

Dancesport Full/Half Blue

9 Awards maximum.

Full Blue criteria:
1. She must compete for the OUDC Varsity A-Team against Cambridge
2. She must make the quarter finals of the team match at the IVDA Nationals competition ("IVDC")
3. She must finish in the top 3 in her team dance in the team match at the IVDA Nationals competition (“IVDC”)
4. She must show true team commitment – she must train consistently hard and have a positive attitude towards her own and others training

Half Blue criteria:
1. She must compete for the OUDC Varsity A-Team against Cambridge
2. She must make the quarter finals of the team match at the IVDA Nationals competition ("IVDC")

Dinghy Full Blue 6 awards maximum, at the captain's discretion, to members of the VM team if the team also reaches the semi-finals of the ladies BUCS competition. Should a woman compete in the mixed team, they may be awarded a blue for competing in the mixed team if the team reaches the quarter-finals of the mixed BUCS and competes in the VM. Jan 11 Jan 14
Eton Fives Half Blue Half Blues are awarded to those who play in the first 3 pairs in the VM. They must also win their VM or reach the quarter finals in the Ladies national competition. Jan 11 Jan 14
Fencing Full Blue

Full Blues are awarded to all members of the first team if they win the Varsity Match AND reach the top 2 in the BUCS championships. Full Blues can also be awarded to any member of the Varsity 1st team who is also either in the top 50 of the national rankings OR reaches the top 8 at BUCS OR scores over 700 points in a national open circuit competition.

All starting members of the first team who are not awarded Full Blues will be awarded Half Blues if they score at least one hit and have competed in at least half of the BUCS matches.

Football Full Blue and Half Blue

14 Awards maximum

Half Blue awarded to those who have played in the Varsity Match for at least 5 minutes.

Full Blues awarded to those who have played in the Varsity Match for at least 5 minutes if any of the following are met:

-the team wins the Varsity Match

-the team reaches the semi finals of the Midlands Conference Cup and the player has played in at least 50% of the cup matches

-the team is promoted to or above Midlannds 1A/retains position in Midlands 1A or above

Golf Full and Half Blue 6 Awards maximum, to players who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the club throughout the season.
Full Blue to players with a handicap of 5 or below.
Half Blue to players with a handicap of 9 or below.

Gymnastics Full/Half Blue Full Blues are awarded at the captain’s discretion to women who:
Achieve an individual medal (come in the top 3) at the varsity match
Score a total over 49 across all 4 apparatus/37 across 3 apparatus at the varsity match
Contribute at least 3 apparatus scores to the team total
Compete at BUCS (level 1 or 2) and make the top 20 in the individual competition

Half Blues are awarded at the captain’s discretion to women who:
Score a total over 45 across all 4 apparatus/35 across 3 apparatus at the varsity match
Contribute at least 2 apparatus scores to the team total
Compete at BUCS (level 1 or 2) and make the top half in the individual

Hockey Full Blue 16 awards maximum, awarded, at the Captain's discretion, to team members that have played in half of the season's league matches, provided the team reaches the last 16 of BUCS OR wins the Varsity Match OR finishes in the top four teams in the BUCS South Premier League. Composed of 11 awards for the starting line up and 4 for subs who play at least 5 minutes. Jan 12 Jan 15

Judo Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue 5 Awards maximum, awarded to those who have a blue belt or higher. A Discretionary Full Blue may be applied for if the member has a black belt. May 08 May 11
Karate Full and Half Blue Up to 5 Full blues maximum awarded to those with a brown belt or higher who either:
  1. take part in Kata and Kumite at Varsity
  2. OR win an individual medal at any national karate competition (eg. BUCS, JKA nationals) and compete at Varsity in the same discipline.
5 Half Blues maximum to women, awarded to brown belts or higher who take part in either Kata or Kumite.		 Oct 12 Oct 15

Korfball Half Blue Four awards maximum at the Captain’s Discretion. Half Blue awarded to players that fulfil the following criteria:
1. The player must represent the team in the BUCS competition and be in the starting 4 at Varsity

Life Saving Half Blue 3 Awards maximum for women competing in the VM and Nationals, who achieve a time of 1:55 or less in the swim and tow. Nov 10 Nov 13
Lightweights Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue 9 Awards maximum. An application for Discretionary Full Blues may be made if the following criteria are fulfilled:
  1. The time of the Lightweight boat is within 4% of the winning Openweight boat.
    AND
  2. The Lightweights beat Cambridge in the VM OR finish within half a length of the Cambridge boat.

Orienteering Half Blue

5 awards maximum, awarded to the top three finishers at Varsity and the other two at the captain’s discretion, with those achieving half blues to be capable of achieving a top 25 finish in the individual A race at BUCS championships.

Pistol Half Blue 8 Awards maximum, awarded to those scoring an average of 80 or above in the women's VM or those who shoot in the men's 1st team in the VM. Nov 12 Nov 15
Polo Half Blue Maximum 4 half blues awarded to players who play in the mixed Varsity ‘A’ team match. Awards are made at the captain’s discretion. May 13 May 16
Pool Half Blue 6 Awards maximum: 3 maximum for the team players who compete in the Varsity Match and are the highest ranked Oxford team at BUCS, provided they reach the semi finals, AND 3 maximum to individuals who play in the Varsity Match, and either:
  1. Reach the final 8 of the BUCS Individual Championships,
    OR
  2. Qualify for the county pool squad, are selected for and play in over half the season's matches.

Real Tennis Half Blue 5 Awards maximum.
A Discretionary Full Blue may be applied for if a player reaches a handicap of 35 or better.		 May 12 May 15
Riding Discretionary Full Blue/Half Blue 4 Awards maximum. Half Blues are awarded, at the captain's discretion, to women who compete in the Varsity Match and also make the Regional Round of BUCS, either as a member of the team or as individuals. Discretionary Full Blues can be awarded to riders who compete in the Varsity Match AND the team wins BUCS nationals, OR gets an individual top 3 at nationals OR is selected for the GB team and ridden in the nations cup in the academic year concerned. Rifle Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue 8 awards maximum, awarded to women scoring over 190/200 points in the women's Varsity Match OR who fire on the OURC 1st Team in the Varsity Match.

A Discretionary Full Blue may be applied for if any two of the following criteria are fulfilled in the VM:
    1. 195/200 or above in the Heslop
    2. 2 points below the GB Kolapore average score or better in the Chancellors*
    3. The average score of the top 3 teams in the Elcho**, or better, in the Humphry
*Excluding each shoote's V-bull score and the overall score of any shooter who scores at least one zero-scoring shot. The average should be rounded as normal.
**Match Rifle National match, shot between the home nations.

Rowing Full Blue & Half Blue 9 Full Blue awards maximum, awarded to those who compete against Cambridge in the Blue Boat. 9 Half Blue awards maximum, awarded to those who compete against Cambridge in Osiris (the reserve crew). Jan 13 Jan 16
Rugby Full Blue 19 Awards maximum, if the team either:

Win the VM, OR
Stay in the BUCS Premiership

Subs must play for at least 5 mins

    
Skiing Half Blue and Discretionary Full Blue 6 Awards maximum. Awarded, at the captain's discretion, to women who have come in the top 8 overall in either the giant slalom or the slalom at the Varsity match. An application for a Discretionary Full Blue may be made for any competitor who wins one of the two races. Nov 11 Nov 14
Squash Full Blue 5 Awards maximum, if the team maintains its position in the Premiership BUCS division or Midlands Division 1A.
Players must have participated in half or more BUCS or Oxfordshire league fixtures for that season. An application for Discretionary Full Blue may be brought to the committee if a top player fails to meet the criteria due to extraordinary circumstances.		 May 12 May 15
Swimming Full/Half Blue Full Blues may be awarded to team members who achieve a certain time standard throughout the season.
Half Blues may be awarded to other members of the pool Varsity team OR to those who compete in the Cross-Channel Varsity Match.		 Jan 13 Jan 16
Table Tennis Half Blue 4 Awards maximum, awarded to players in the squad team who play in BUCS matches and the VM throughout the year, and the team as a whole wins the VM. Jan 11 Jan 14
Tae Kwon Do Half Blue/Discretionary/Full Blue 5 Awards maximum, awarded to 1st team VM members. An application for a Discretionary Full Blue may be made for any team member that is a black belt AND wins their individual fight at the VM. Nov 13 Nov 16
Tennis Full Blue 8 awards maximum, to players who play in the Varsity Match Feb 13 Feb 16
Trampolining Half Blue/Discretionary/Full Blue 4 Awards maximum, awarded to those who gain at least 47 points in BUCS 3 or above AND score in the top 8 at the VM. An application for a Discretionary Full Blue may be made for those who gain at least 50 point in BUCS 2 or above AND score in the top 6 at the VM. Nov 12 Nov 15
Triathlon Half Blue/Discretionary/Full Blue 3 Awards maximum. Awarded, at the Captain's discretion, to those who:
1. Represent Oxford in the Ladies Team at the Varsity match AND
2. Rate in the top 30 women in BUCS and/or achieve an outstanding result at a major national or international triathlon, eg. Top 10 placing in the London Triathlon.
A Discretionary Full Blue can be applied for if the athlete is also placed in the top 15 women at the BUCS Sprint Triathlon OR the BUCS Olympic Distance Triathlon.		 Oct 11 Oct 14
Ultimate Frisbee Half Blue 5 awards maximum, awarded, at the captain's discretion, to women who have:
1. Played in both the indoor and outdoor women’s Varsity Matches.
2. In both the indoor and outdoor student nationals in the open OR women’s team.
3. And have won the indoor or outdoor women’s Varsity Match OR finished in the top six in the women’s or mixed or top eight in the open outdoor nationals.		 May 11 May 14
Volleyball Discretionary Full Blue Up to 12 Half Blues are awarded to those who:
a) compete in the Varsity Match
b) compete in 50% of the BUCS league matches

In the event of an exceptional season, 8 of the half blues can be upgraded to Full Blues providing the player:
a) competes in Varsity
b) competes in 50% of the BUCS league matches
c) the team wins the Varsity match
d) the team does one of the following: top 6 in EVA student cup, top 6 in BUCS finals, 1st position in BUCS midlands Div1A

Waterpolo Discretionary Full Blue

Half Blue criteria: Awarded to the starting line-up in the Varsity Match (7 players). Additional Half Blues available to up to 6 others players in the Varsity Match at the discretion of the captain of OUWPC. 

Discretionary Full Blue criteria: Play in the Varsity match, reach the BUCS finals (top 4 finish in BUCS ). If both of these criteria are met, the captain may award up to 7 Full Blues at her discretion.

Fleet Racing: Half Blue

Sailing: 6 Awards maximum, awarded to members of the Varsity team if the team reaches the semi-finals of BUCS. Should a woman also compete in the men's 1st team the Men's Blues committee will make a recommendation to this committee that she be awarded either a full or half blue.

Fleet Racing: Up to four half blues to be awarded at the discretion of the captain for competing in the yacht fleet racing Varsity Match AND finishing 12th university or higher in the BUCS Student Yachting Nationals.
