Field Notes: A Journal of Collegiate Anthropology was founded in 2009 by graduate students in the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Department of Anthropology. This journal was created based on the recognition that the research conducted by students throughout the course of their undergraduate and graduate education is a valuable resource. For fifteen years, Field Notes provided students of anthropology with a forum to showcase original, peer-reviewed scholarship. During this time, the journal was reviewed, edited, and published primarily by students in the UWM Department of Anthropology with occasional peer review by students from affiliated departments and institutions. Thirteen volumes of Field Notes including ninety-four papers and book reviews were published between 2009 and 2024. Jo Gansemer recently received her MS in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee. She specializes in biological anthropology with a specific focus on primatology. Her interests are multi-disciplinary and include non-human primate behavior, hormones, ethnoprimatology, and conservation. Her graduate research analyzed the relationship between hair cortisol concentration and parity in South African vervet monkeys.

Take it, MUSE, from the top-" from Cadmus, the Roving Researcher (43) Zeus, a divine bull, runs a... more Take it, MUSE, from the top-" from Cadmus, the Roving Researcher (43) Zeus, a divine bull, runs atop the open water carrying a freshly abducted mortal woman Europa upon his back. Her brother Cadmus of Tyre chases the pair across the sea. With the Cosmic King otherwise occupied, a monstrous many-headed-many-handed Typhoon steals Zeus' lightning. Next Typhoon engages in universal upheaval as he throws stars around the heavens, marries off constellations, and dredges up islands to skip them like pebbles far across the sea. Typhoon drives all the immortals into hiding in Egypt. The entire universe trembles before the monster. Only Zeus and Cadmus together can save everyone from a return to cosmic chaos. So begins the Dionysiaca, translated as Tales of Dionysus, the last Epic of Antiquity written by Nonnus of Panopolis sometime in the fifth century AD. Dionysiaca is a testament of Dionysus from the time the divine son of Zeus appears on the earth to his triumph and ascension as an Olympian God. Nonnus also paraphrased St. John's Gospel in the same Epic Dactylic Metre. Outside of these two texts there is literally nothing known about the man. For an Anthropologist interested in Antiquity, Nonnus is very useful: his volume of poetry describes, analyzes, compares, and dissects the ancient world of which Nonnus is a part. Where Homer's world is in transition from Dark to Archaic Age, Nonnus' world is in transition from Late Antiquity to Medieval Dark Age. As he wrote, the Mediterranean world was awash with religious, political, economic, and social upheaval. Nonnus did not know where history was headed, but he witnessed monumental changes, population upheaval, escalating barbarian invasions, plagues, upstart religious cults from all across the Empire, and the promise Jove made to Aeneas and Augustus coming undone as Rome shriveled, was sacked, then irrevocably became two. For a Greek speaker of this era, the whole world was becoming smaller, less defined around the edges, and with ever more terrifying bogeymen beyond the frontiers. Then Nonnus put pen to paper, wrote poetry in the oldest form to describe what he saw, to show people's greatest fears, and glorify the gods looked to as ancient society degraded through troubled times.

Nationalist Theory and Politicization of Archaeological Resources: Manifestations in Iraq

Archaeological resources have been used by political regimes to further their own interests acros... more Archaeological resources have been used by political regimes to further their own interests across time and space for many decades since the discipline was established as a profession in the late 19th century. Regimebacked 20 th century dictators like Iraq's President Saddam Hussein, Iran's Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak understood that whoever controls a nation's archeological resources controls the nation's memory. By controlling collective memory, a regime can assert control over its people. Archeological resources can be used to validate a regime's control over physical space as well. Educating a population about its archeological past can help solidify the legitimacy of a political entity. However, power changes hands, and archaeological resources are not immune to the shifting of power, be it through external conflict, such as an invasion, or internal conflict, such as a revolution. While destruction of sites by military action is obviously destructive, as when overly zealous soldiers fire weapons into or bomb cultural sites intentionally. Archaeological resources are also impacted by changing political agendas. In situations where the ruling party is overthrown and a power vacuum forms, destructive activities such as looting and land development are expanded. This article examines how Iraq's archeological resources were co-opted and politicized by Saddam Hussein Ba'athist government and how different political, societal, and academic forces interacted with these archaeological resources after the fall of the Ba'athists.

Therefore, Field Notes exists to give students of anthropology a forum to showcase original, high quality scholarship. The journal is reviewed, edited, and published entirely by anthropology students and is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee's Anthropology Student Union (ASU). The ASU serves anthropology students by encouraging interaction across the four subfields of anthropology in both social and professional environments.
