The analysis was carried out using qualitative interviews. We recruited five participants, both male and female, who differed in their VR experiences and in the intensity of their weekly physical activity. The results show that people who had already experienced VR technology were the most willing to participate in VR training sessions. A key perceived advantage of VR training is the presence of trainers, which seemed to strongly motivate participants. To increase motivation to train, it is necessary to: explain the reasons for performing specific exercises; adjust the order of exercises during training sessions; and utilise the capabilities of VR environments. This article presents solutions that serve to enhance the attractiveness of VR fitness training.

We will investigate how people usually deal with problems related to sharing and cooperating. We will be discussing how social control mechanisms help us, humans, enforce and sustain cooperation, learn about Elinor Ostrom's research about managing the commons and experiment with some solutions that fishermen might use to prevent damaging the fish stock.<br>

In 2001 Jonathan Bendor and Piotr Swistak derived deductively the existence of such norms from a simple boundedly rational choice model. Their analysis was based on a perfect public information case. We take into account communication and analyse at the micro level the process of production and interpretation of information on which decisions are based. We show that when information is fully private and we allow for communication a state of anomie can result. If some social control mechanisms are available, social stability can be maintained. The less efficient the social control mechanisms however, the more restrictive rules will be needed to sustain the social norms. Furthermore not all cognitive strategies for interpreting received messages are equally effective. Strategies based on reputation are better than strategies based on profit analysis.

The full implementation of RPA is riddled with challenges relating both to the reality of everyday business operations, from SMEs to SSCs and beyond, and the social effects of the changing job market. To successfully address these points there is a need to develop a solution that would adjust to the existing business operations and at the same time lower the negative social impact of the automation process. To achieve these goals we propose a hybrid, human-centered approach to the development of software robots. This design and implementation method combines the Living Lab approach with empowerment through participatory design to kick-start the co-development and co-maintenance of hybrid software robots which, supported by variety of AI methods and tools, including interactive and collaborative ML in the cloud, transfor...

The game was designed to tackle at once several crucial topics related to the issue of aging, namely the social inclusion, education in the field of modern technology, motivation for learning as well as physical activity. Mixed-aged teams consisting of two players: a junior and a senior took part in the game. The preliminary results suggest that the game can successfully address a number of issues including improving the elderly technical skills, increasing the elderly physical activity as well as positive intergenerational interaction. The paper describes the game setup in details and presents some initial data gathered during the gameplay.

To research the aspect of older adults' interaction with voice user interfaces (VUI) we organized two workshops and gathered insights concerning possible benefits and barriers to the use of VA combined with SHT by older adults. Apart from evaluating the participants' interaction with the devices during the two workshops we also discuss some improvements to the VA interaction paradigm.

Looking into the Educational Mirror: Why Computation Is Hardly Being Taught in the Social Sciences, and What to Do About It
Springer Proceedings in Complexity, 2020

Studying behavioural dynamics is a valuable lens, both in public policy making and community planning and in scientific projects on how human behaviour affects ecosystems. Computational social science (CSS) offers a framework for this type of studies, as it connects a complex networked systems perspective with a suite of computational tools and methodologies. Despite its potential and fast growth, CSS is still hardly found in programmes at bachelor and master levels in Europe. We would like to take a closer look at this discrepancy. We discuss why there is a need to develop computational education in the social sciences and why it is a challenge. We consider two perspectives. In the students’ perspective, there is the problem of mathematical anxiety and gender inequalities in STEM education. In the academic teachers’ perspective, there is the problem of a split within social sciences, inadequacy of statistical models for analysing dynamics, and insufficient educational resources at an appropriate level of difficulty. We build a case for creating a MOOC programme addressed specifically to social sciences students to fill in the existing gaps, facilitate the organisation of learning communities, and advance computational thinking within social science. Creating such a MOOC programme is the goal of our Erasmus+ project “Action for Computational Thinking in Social Sciences” (ACTISS).

Within this project, a large-scale survey of children aged 9-17 from 19 European countries was conducted. The data were collected between autumn 2017 and summer 2019 from 25,101 children by national teams from the EU Kids Online network. This report provides information about the nature of the project, how the questionnaire was developed, sampling and data collection, ethical issues, data management and weighting. The information in this report should enable dataset users to understand the logic and nature of the survey.

The study was run with a balanced sample of 1503 respondents who independently evaluated 154 web pages from several thematic categories. Users taking part in the study not only evaluated credibility, but also filled a questionnaire covering additional respondents ’ traits. Using the gathered information about socioeconomic status and psychological features of the users, we studied the influence of subjectivity and bias in the credibility ratings. Subjectivity and bias, in fact, represent a key design issue for Web Credibility systems, to the extent that they could jeopardize the system performance if not taken into account. We found out that evaluations of Web content credibility are slightly subjective. On the other hand, the evaluations exhibit a strong acquiescence bias. In his classic model on neighborhood segregation which initiated a large and influential literature, individuals with no desire to be segregated from those who belong to other social groups nevertheless wind up clustering with their own type. Most extensions of Schelling’s model have replicated this result. There is an important mismatch, however, between theory and observation, which has received relatively little attention. Whereas Schelling-inspired models typically predict large degrees of segregation starting from virtually any initial condition, the empirical literature documents considerable heterogeneity in measured levels of segregation. This paper introduces a mechanism that can produce significantly higher levels of integration and, therefore, brings predicted distributions of segregation more in line with real-world observation. As in th...

We concentrated on psychological factors that lead to the characteristic positive bias observed in many working social feedback systems on the Internet. We have used International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) and measured the following traits: trust, conformity, risk taking, need for cognition and intellect. Results suggest that trustworthiness and risk taking are factors clearly differentiating people with respect to tendency to overestimate, underestimate and judge accordingly websites ’ credibility. Intuitively people characterized by high general trust tend to be more generous in their credibility evaluations. On the other hand, people who are more willing to take risk, tend to be more critical of the Interne...
