The categorisation provides clear directions with respect to the prioritisation of system features from the perspective of the development of systems for specific, single user groups and systems that have a more general target user group.

We assume that audio enrichment through images can be useful to users when the selection of images is semantically associated to the spoken content. In this paper, we report about a user study to evaluate the relevance of images selected automatically based on the speech content of audio fragments (audio interviews in the Dutch language). A total of 43 participants took part in the study. They listened to a set of audio fragments and performed an image rating task. In addition to that, we conducted a small follow-up study with 3 participants to shed more light on the results of the first study. We observed that merely keyword similarity between image captions and speech fragments may not be a good predictor for image relevance from a user viewpoint, and therefore we speculate th...

The searching task involves nding target video segments based on a short natural language sentence query and the hyperlinking task involves nding links from the target video segments to other related video segments in the collection using a set of anchor segments in the videos that correspond to the textual search queries. To nd the starting points in the video, we only used speech transcripts and metadata as evidence source, however, other visual features (for e.g., faces, shots and keyframes) might also aect results for a query. We indexed speech transcripts and metadata, furthermore, the speech transcripts were indexed at speech segment level and at sentence level to improve the likelihood of nding jump-in-points. For linking video segments, we computed k-nearest neighbours of video segments using euclidean distance.

As the learner takes control over his personal competence development, it is in his interest to find suitable learning opportunities, relevant information and optimal support, particularly in interactions with others. Effective online communities rely on an active social structure. The key question then becomes which factors in the Learning Network inhibit or enhance social interaction for effective learning. It is against this background that we investigate aspects of successful social interactions in online communities. In this paper therefore, we focus our attention on the question of how personal profiles can be used to stimulate active participation in Learning Networks.

On desktop computers, semantic software has to provide stable services and has to reflect the personal view of the user. Our approach to ontologies, the Personal Information Model PIMO allows to create tagging services like del.icio.us on the desktop. A semantic wiki allows further annotations. Continuous evaluations of the system helped to improve it. These results were created in the EPOS research project and are available in the open source projects Aperture, kaukoluwiki, and gnowsis and will be continued in the Nepomuk project. By using these components, other developers can create new desktop applications the web 2.0 way.

The system is intended to help a learner in getting recommendation about suitable people who are interested on a similar topic and share common learning goal with the current learner. We propose that by using the user-generated (text) content, social-bookmarking and social-tagging, driven by Web 2.0 approaches, we can implicitly profile people and find people's interests on a given topic. We also like to use their existing social connections as an evidence to select suitable people in recommending a learner.

Existing work on multimedia information retrieval has focused on search for individual relevant items or on content linking without specific attention to search results. We describe our research exploring integrated multimodal search and hyperlinking for multimedia data. Our investigation is based on the MediaEval 2012 Search and Hyperlinking task. This includes a known-item search task using the Blip10000 internet video collection, where automatically created hyperlinks link each relevant item to related items within the collection. The search test queries and link assessment for this task was generated using the Amazon Mechanical Turk crowdsourcing platform. Our investigation examines a range of alternative methods which seek to address the challenges of search and hyperlinking using multimodal approaches. The results of our experiments are used to propose a research agenda for developing effective techniques for search and hyperlinking of multimedia content.

We conducted an empirical study to identify the most relevant features of such a tool. There were 11 experts from 7 different countries with technical and non-technical background who participated in the study. Each of the participants were invited by email and given a brief description about the scenario for the need of a tool in an online Learning Network to find people for help (social support system). This tool can be developed on mobile devices to search for peer learners. The participants generated 153 unique ideas about the need for social support system in Learning Network. These ideas were sorted and rated, and further analysis with Concept Mapping produced ten relevant clusters of interest. These clusters (concepts) suggest the features which are relevant for a tool that would support learners in connecting with others in a Learning Network. The concept mapping methodology described in this paper has also been applied in other projects; one of them is about the "investigation of pedagogic areas in which mobile learning is an appropriate solution". We intend to publish the work in the future publication.

A Group Concept Mapping approach was applied for collecting, structuring and analyzing the data. Eleven experts generated 82 unique ideas, which were then sorted and rated. The analysis, including multidimensional stalling and hierarchical cluster analysis, identified five mobile learning problem areas, namely:
