In Data Warehouse (DW) scenarios, ETL (Extraction, Transformation, Loading) processes are responsible for the extraction of data from heterogeneous operational data sources, their transformation (conversion, cleaning, normalization, etc.) and their loading into the DW. In this paper, we present a framework for the design of the DW back-stage (and the respective ETL processes) based on the key observation that this task fundamentally involves dealing with the specificities of information at very low levels of granularity including transformation rules at the attribute level. Specifically, we present a disciplined framework for the modeling of the relationships between sources and targets in different levels of granularity (including coarse mappings at the database and table levels to detailed inter-attribute mappings at the attribute level). In order to accomplish this goal, we extend UML (Unified Modeling Language) to model attributes as first-class citizens. In our attempt to provide complementary views of the design artifacts in different levels of detail, our framework is based on a principled approach in the usage of UML packages, to allow zooming in and out the design of a scenario.

We have utilized a mouse mutant (C.B-17 scid) that lacks functional T and B lymphocytes to examine the relationship among transplantable progenitors of natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, and B cells. The NK-progenitor cells contained in the bone marrow were detected by their ability to generate mature NK cells, following transfer of bone marrow cells into NK cell-depleted and lethally irradiated mice. Regeneration of NK activity in the recipient mice was monitored by two different assays: the ability to rapidly clear infused YAC-1 cells in vivo and the ability of spleen cells to lyse YAC-1 cells in vitro. Recipients were also tested for the presence of mitogen-responsive T and B cells and for prethymocytes (thymus-repopulating cells). We found that the capacity of C.B-17 scid bone marrow cells to generate mature NK cells was equivalent to that of control C.B-17 bone marrow cells. The regenerated NK cells shared similar functional activity and surface phenotype. In contrast, bone marrow cells from C.B-17 scid mice failed to generate thymocytes and peripheral T and B cells. These data indicate that the transplantable NKprogenitor cells are not defective or deficient in C.B-17 scid mice and, therefore, are distinct from the transplantable progenitor(s) of T and B cells.

2B4 is a cell surface glycoprotein related to CD2 and implicated in the regulation of natural killer and T lymphocyte function. A recombinant protein containing the extracellular region of mouse (m)2B4 attached to avidin-coated fluorescent beads bound to rodent cells, and binding was completely blocked by CD48 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Using surface plasmon resonance, we showed that purified soluble mCD48 bound m2B4 with a six-to ninefold higher affinity ( K d Ϸ 16 M at 37 Њ C) than its other ligand, CD2. Human CD48 bound human 2B4 with a similar affinity ( K d Ϸ 8 M). The finding of an additional ligand for CD48 provides an explanation for distinct functional effects observed on perturbing CD2 and CD48 with mAbs or by genetic manipulation.
