This article aims to discuss the kinds and functions of some maxim of politeness which is used in... more This article aims to discuss the kinds and functions of some maxim of politeness which is used in The Kelly Clarkson Show. Two theories are used in doing this research , the first ist theory proposed by Leech Principles of Pragmatics (1983) and the second is a theory proposed by Searle Speech Event (1979). In doing this reseacrch the writer uses descriptive and qualitative by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2004) to analyze the research. The source of data in this thesis taken from the YouTube videos The Kelly Clarckson Show. The data are the utterances of the host and the guests in the videos. The finding of this research shows that there are three kinds of the maxim which are used in these videos they are Approbation, Agreement, and Modesty Maxim. The most dominant maxim found is the Approbation maxim. Then, there were two kinds of functions of the maxim of politeness found in The Kelly Clarckson Show, they are convivial and collaborative.

Non-original phonotactics are often generated by type accuracy and error. Purpose: This article examines the effect of phonology on non-native phonetic changes. Methods: This research is a qualitative research with a literature review study method from the latest research. The collected data were analyzed by in-depth analysis. Results: Based on the results of data analysis, it shows that non-native speakers are not as accurate in the production of different illegal sequences. These findings also imply that linguistic experiences with native tones need not facilitate non-native phonetic changes. This paper describes the acoustic features of Arabic utterances in terms of duration in three mai... more This paper describes the acoustic features of Arabic utterances in terms of duration in three main modes of speech function: declarative, interrogative, and imperative modes. In this study, the duration of the speakers’ utterances are distinguished regarding their acoustic quality. In conducting this research, the method was the experimental method which was used to measure the duration with regard to the acoustic feature. In this experiment, this study employed the computer program ‘Praat’ to measure the acoustic duration of Arabic utterances. The data was recorded from four Indonesian learners of Arabic and one native speaker of Arabic. The target utterances used in this study were [akaltu alaruzza maʕa al dajā ji fī al ɣadāi], [matā yaðhabu aħmad ilā al sūqi] and [χuð hāðā al kitāba yā ʕuθmān]. This study aimed to find out the impoliteness strategy used by netizens in commenting on actor... more This study aimed to find out the impoliteness strategy used by netizens in commenting on actor's tweets and the forms of tweet comments made by netizens. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were tweeted by Jefri Nichol, one of the famous actors in Indonesia. In analyzing the data, the Theory of Culpeper (1996) describes the kinds of impoliteness strategies that netizens used in their tweet comments. This research shows that there are five data of tweet comments categorized into four types: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm or mock politeness. Every speaker should have knowledge on language politeness. Pragmatically speaking, language politeness is related and realized in speech acts. Speakers should understand speech contexts of their utterance and meanings contained in it. Some utterances may hurt the listeners but with choosing and using proper dictions and applying politeness, it will not hurt the listeners. The data collected using observation and conversation method (Sudaryanto, 2017) and then analyzed using Searle’s speech act theory (1979) and Leech’s politeness principles (2014). The paper analyzes the effectiveness of debate techniques in the process of learning English as a... more The paper analyzes the effectiveness of debate techniques in the process of learning English as a forein language and how such effectiveness improves students' speaking ability in the Darul Arafah Raya Islamic Boarding School. Teaching English was previously based on teacher's centered methods focusing only on teachers so learning process seemed boring. As a result, the students were weak in speaking. The study used a qualitative descriptive method as well as class room action research. Data were obtained from responses by the sixth grade students who were given pre-and post-tests. The results show that the students are able to choose and use suitable dictions and construct various types of sentences to express their arguments on the occcasions of different motions. Thus, students' speaking ability in the school indicate sufficient improvement after teachers chose and applied debate techniques in learning English.
