Cadmium transport was studied in human lung cell lines A549 and H441 as a function of inorganic metal speciation. A 2-fold higher equilibrium accumulation was obtained in the A549 cells, but a specific system of transport of high affinity and low capacity was characterized in both these cells. Exposure conditions optimizing [Cd 2+ ] increased Cd uptake, but CdCl 2Àn n species are also taken up. Studies on Cd-Ca reciprocal inhibition do not support a role for Ca pathways in Cd uptake. Nramp2 and Zip8 mRNAs were detected in both cell lines. Fe inhibited Cd uptake in the nitrate medium with an apparent at pH 5.5. NRAMP2 may contribute to Cd uptake but a major role is precluded since the overall process of accumulation was inhibited by acidic conditions. The antiepileptic drug carbamazapine (CBZ) readily persists in sewage-water treatment plant wastewaters and finds its way into receiving water bodies. Our study sought to examine the bioaccumulation and toxicity of CBZ using an experimental aquatic trophic chain composed of the green alga, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the crustacean, Thamnocephalus platyurus, and the cnidarian, Hydra attenuata. Bioaccumulation of CBZ was estimated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and revealed bioaccumulation factors of 2.2 and 12.6, respectively, in algae and crustaceans. No significant bioaccumulation was observed in H. attenuata. In T. platyurus, a strong stimulation of global heme oxidase (HO) (76%), and glutathione-S-transferase activity (130%) but a drastic inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A-like activity was found which suggests alteration of enzyme activity by CBZ. However, in the hydranth H. attenuata, an increase in both global cytochrome and cytochrome P450 3A-like activity was found, while GST activity was inhibited. Lipid peroxidation was reduced in T. platyurus and H. attenuata suggesting that redox activity of the lipophilic CBZ was at play. This study highlighted the processes of carbamazepine toxicity transfer between trophic levels in aquatic organisms.

In many studies, flight initiation distance (FID, the distance at which a prey starts to flee at the approach of a walker) is positively related to starting distance (SD, the distance at which the walker begins to approach) and alert distance (AD, the distance at which the focal individual becomes alert to the threat). In spite of the fundamental differences between SD, a covariate that may not have any biological effect, and AD, a measure related to the behaviour of the animal, it is common to use SD as a proxy for AD when AD is hard to measure (e.g. in species that do not exhibit distinguishable alert postures). However, the relationship between SD and AD or FID may not have any biological reasons, but may instead simply result from a mathematical artefact because of the constraints SD ≥ AD ≥ FID. Under such constrains, the homoscedasticity assumption is violated, and thus, the classical null hypothesis of linear regression (slope = 0) is invalid. In this study, we first show that using SD as a proxy for AD can strongly affect the results on FID. Using data from FID tests on alpine marmots (Marmota marmota), a linear mixed model with AD as a covariate, suggested that the interaction between previous activity and AD had an effect on FID, while this effect was not detected when SD replaced AD as the covariate in the analysis. We then propose that the actual statistical test of the relationship between SD, AD and FID should be based on a null hypothesis that incorporates the constraint SD ≥ AD ≥ FID ≥ 0 and generate 95% CI of simulated slopes obtained from random values under this constraint. This null hypothesis can be rejected if the observed slope of the relationship between two of these variables is outside the 95% CI. We demonstrated that, for alpine marmots, the observed slope of the relationship between AD and SD was within the 95% CI of the simulated slopes. The absence of a statistically significant biological effect in the relationship between SD and AD raises important questions on the outcome of relationship between SD and FID. In Alpine marmot flight, decision should be studied separating the effect of SD on AD and the effect of AD on FID.

SUMMARY Managing for multiple ecosystem services is a growing issue for forest managers. As trade-offs arise between conflicting management objectives, stakeholders must be informed of the possible outcomes of alternative choices in order to facilitate decision-making. We modelled stand dynamics under single-management and functional zoning multiple-management (TRIAD; i.e. three-zone) scenarios in different forest types typical of eastern North America with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS). Timber production, carbon stocking and habitat quality ecosystem services were calculated with simulation outputs. Habitat quality was measured using a habitat suitability index that integrated stand structural indicators. A multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) was performed in order to rank scenarios.
