Federated simulations address the need for interoperability, as well as the improvement of reuse ... more Federated simulations address the need for interoperability, as well as the improvement of reuse and composability of existing simulation models. The focal goal in a federated simulation is to facilitate composable simulations by standardizing interfaces to enable at least the technical interoperability among disparate simulations. Yet, existing federated simulation infrastructures neither facilitate sound reasoning about substantive interoperability nor are dynamically extensible. Emergent web services technologies hold out the potential to significantly improve the development of interoperable, extensible, and dynamically composable federations. As such, the recent XMSF initiative urges the use of a set of Web-based technologies that can be applied within an extensible framework for next generation of modeling and simulation applications to interoperate. Agent-supported simulation involves the use of intelligent agents to enhance modeling and simulat... more Agent-supported simulation involves the use of intelligent agents to enhance modeling and simulation (M&S) infrastructures and consists of support by software agents: (1) to provide computer assistance for front-end and/or backend interface functions in M&S environments; (2) to process elements of an M&S study symbolically (for example, for consistency checks and built-in reliability); and (3) to provide cognitive abilities to the elements of an M&S study, such as perception, anticipation, learning or understanding abilities. Several aspects of agent-supported simulation are clarified and references are provided.

As is the case with all scientific simulation studies, computerized simulation of nuclear fuel wa... more As is the case with all scientific simulation studies, computerized simulation of nuclear fuel waste management systems can introduce and hide various types of errors. Frameworks to clarify issues of model reliability and software quality assurance are offered. Potential problems with reference to the main areas of concern for reliability and quality are discussed; e.g. experimental issues, decomposition, scope, fidelity, verification, requirements, testing, correctness, robustness are treated with reference to the experience gained in the past. A list comprising over 80 most common computerization errors is provided. Software tools and techniques used to detect and to correct computerization errors are discussed.

This paper presents the "position papers" contributed by the participants of a panel at the 2008 ... more This paper presents the "position papers" contributed by the participants of a panel at the 2008 Winter Simulation Conference. As the paper pre-dates the actual panel, the purpose of the paper is to provide some background information about the views of the individual panelists prior to the actual panel. Each panelist was asked to submit a position paper addressing the general question of "What makes good Modeling and Simulation research?" This paper presents a summary of these position papers along with an introduction and conclusion aimed at identifying the common themes to setup the conference panel. This panel was initiated by a discussion with Levent Yilmaz (Auburn University) regarding the general field of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) and, more specifically, the research areas in the field. We sent the following question to several researchers involved in various M&Srelated research activities: We asked the recipients to respond with a position paper discussing this general question. Interestingly, there was a very natural division in the responses and this division led to two separate panels, each addressing a slightly different question. The challenge is to explore how the advances in simulation gaming as reflected in its state-of-the-art as well as in its potential can be helpful for conflict and peace studies. This article presents the issues, challenges, and foundations underlying multimodels and the multisimulation gaming strategy. Taxonomy of multimodels and plausible multisimulation realization strategies are presented to contribute to the development of advanced simulation-based problem-solving environments for social and political scientists to improve their ability to conceive, perceive, and foresee conflicting situations to ideally prevent them and—if they are inevitable—to resolve them.

Agent-monitored multisimulation provides a powerful paradigm to conceive and perform experimentat... more Agent-monitored multisimulation provides a powerful paradigm to conceive and perform experimentations not possible by traditional simulation techniques. Multisimulation was developed for simulation-based conflict management and training purposes. Anticipatory behavior has several advantages over reactive behavior. Monitoring multisimulation studies by agents bring additional benefits. First, overviews of several types of threats and the relevance and importance of anticipation are given. Then, the possibilities offered by multisimulation and agent-monitored anticipatory multisimulation are presented. Afterwards, the appropriateness of agent-monitored anticipatory multisimulation is shown for several types of synchronous or asynchronous threat management and training.

Face detection is an integral part of the motion based object detection which combines digital image processing and computer vision for the detection of instances and faces as well. This paper provides a brief overview of the recent trends; current open challenging issues and their solutions available for efficient detection of faces form video stream or still images. This paper also discusses various approaches which are widely used to detect the faces in the dynamic background, illumination and other current challenges. In the last section, a framework for face detection is also proposed using SVM classifier.

They are (1) providing experience for three types of training and entertainment and (2) performing experiments. Several characteristics of emergence are reviewed, especially within the framework of the simulation of social systems: and lists of over 30 terms related with emergence as well as over 20 types of emergences are given as appendices. The importance of perception in human decision making and activities is underlined; anticipation and early detection of emergence are presented as a special cases of perception. Basis of a methodology to model emergence is explained.
