This paper focusses on puppet theatre performances held from September 1943 to October
1944 in “Free Greece”, i.e., the part of central mountainous Greece controlled by resistance
groups fighting against the Nazi occupation. The performances were given by a
puppet theatre troupe created by the intellectual leadership of the Resistance fighters and
led by the puppeteer Nikos Akiloglou. The study relies upon research in progress based
on stage objects (puppets and stage sets), plays and archival documents (photos, paintings,
films, interviews), as well as on interviews conducted with people associated with
members of that puppet theatre group. The paper aims to reveal the role of the puppet
theatre in “Free Greece” and investigate its impact on children to whom the performances
were mainly addressed. For the time being, due to the lack of children’s testimonies
of that time, the impact on them is studied only in this specific period and through the
discourse of others (educators, artists and the puppeteer), not the children themselves.
The paper also aims to show the impact of the resistance puppet theatre group’s activity
on the puppeteer’s longevity and how it affected his personal identity formation as it was
the means of his involvement in the Resistance.

Particularité linguistique et identité ethnique
Arvanites et arvanitika
Dans cette communication, j’ai étudié la relation entre la particularité
linguistique et l’identité ethnique, dans le cas présent la relation entre la langue
arvanite, ou arvanitika, et le sentiment d’appartenance au groupe ethnique des
Arvanites. Ce sujet a été examiné du point de vue de l’Anthropologie Sociale ayant
comme base ethnographique Didima, un des villages arvanitophones d’Argolide.
La question principale est dans quelle mesure l’un des deux substantifs de la
relation « langue-identité » constitue une présupposition pour l’autre. C’est-à-dire,
comment quelqu’un est défini comme Arvanite par les membres de la communauté
étudiée ? Celui qui parle l’arvanitika ? Or, celui qui ne parle pas l’arvanitika, ce n’est
pas un Arvanite ? Et, celui qui est Arvanite, il faut impérativement qu’il parle
arvanitika ? Dans d’autres termes, ont été recherchées les limites linguistiques dans
lesquelles les gens définissent leur identité ethnique.
La recherche a montré que les limites concernant la langue arvanite sont fluides,
souples et selon le cas réadaptées et négociables. Ce qui est le plus important pour
l’attribution et l’acquisition de l’identité ethnique n’est pas la connaissance de la
langue arvanite mais surtout son acceptation. En fonction des limites, l’identité
ethnique (identité arvanite) est continuellement négociable et reconstituée.
Finalement, la communauté locale s’est avérée très souple en ce qui concerne sa
particularité linguistique dans la mesure où cette dernière n’est pas rejetée. Par
conséquent, l’identité fondée sur la langue n’est pas contestée ni rejetée, parce que
cela pourrait mettre en danger la substance de la communauté elle-même qui est
encore basée sur l’identité arvanite.

THE FRENCH CONSULS’ CORRESPONDENCE REFERRING TO NAFPLIO (1692-1715)

Three volumes in the form of photocopies and microfilms, bought from the National Archives of France and entitled “Consular Correspondence – Nafplio 1686-1784”, are kept at the General State Archives –the Argolida Prefecture Archives. The subject of this communication is to review the French consular documents of this collection, specifically those dating back to the period 1692-1715, given that the first document included in the volumes comes from 1686 and has no relation to the rest, as it exclusively refers to the Nafplio siege, whereas the following document –actually the first consular letter– dates from 1692.
The documents of the period 1692-1715 amount to 79 and in their vast
majority are written in French. They are actually copies of outgoing documents, principally letters. Almost all the letters are signed by the same person, Balthazar Goujon, the consul of France initially located in Athens and subsequently in Nafplio. The addressee of most of these outgoing letters is always Louis Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain, a high-ranking official in the French state administration.
The letters feature a wide range of issues of economic or commercial
nature, among which the long-term efforts of the French to establish a Nafplio based French consulate in the Venetian-occupied Morea stand out. As a result, the letters reveal aspects of the commercial competition between the two great maritime powers in the Mediterranean: France and Venice. Other topics discussed in the letters concern the vessel traffic and the circulation of agricultural goods (wheat, olive oil, wine etc.) in the port of Nafplio, without reference to statistical data. In addition, the letters provide information about the institutional function of the French consul (prerequisites and procedure for the consul’s appointment, tasks and duties, remuneration) The review of the consular correspondence referring to the years 1692-1715 –and to a greater extent its thorough future study– reveals the role of the French in the commerce of the Peloponnese during a pivotal period for the area. It also contributes to a better understanding of the reasons why the
French prevailed commercially in the area after it was occupied by the Turks, i.e. from 1715 to the end of the 18th century.

T his paper 2 focuses on a puppet theatre troupe which performed from September 1943 to the end of 1944 in "Free Greece" / Eleftheri Ellada, i.e. the part of central mountainous Greece which was under the control of the resistance groups fighting against Nazi occupation. The main protagonist of the performances was the puppeteer Nikos Akiloglou assisted by artists and educationalists. The starting point of the present paper is the close relationship between puppet theatre and play, since the spectacle of puppet theatre is based on puppets which can be seen as toys animated by the puppeteer. In that way he plays in both meanings of the term-both recreationally and theatrically. The spectacle itself is nothing but the output of such play. Nikos Akiloglou himself when referring to a puppet theatre performance called it "a very Greek game", also noting that the performance "can stand… as a children's game with puppets" 3 [Akiloglou/Argyriadi, 2005]. Nikos Akiloglou (1914/1915-2005) 4 was a professional puppeteer, who performed between 1935 and 1947 during a period when, in Greece, puppet theatre was gradually being transformed from an adult and family spectacle to a children's show [Akiloglou/Argyriadi, 2005].

Με γνώμονα την ανθρωπολογική σκέψη,  το βιβλίο αυτό έχει ως αντικείμενο τη μελέτη των σχέσεων εξουσίας υπό το πρίσμα της τελετουργίας, η οποία στη διευρυμένη της έννοια περιλαμβάνει όχι μόνο τις μαγικοθρησκευτικές αλλά και τις κοσμικές τελετουργίες.  Καθώς μάλιστα οι τελετουργίες επαναλαμβάνονται στη διάρκεια των χρόνων, η διαχείριση της τελετουργικής μνήμης αποτελεί πρωτεύουσα μέριμνα της εξουσίας που τις έχει εγκαθιδρύσει.  Το ζήτημα αυτό διερευνάται  μέσα από τη μελέτη της τελετής της άφιξης του Όθωνα στο Ναύπλιο, ως πρώτου βασιλιά της Ελλάδας, στις 25 Ιανουαρίου 1833, καθώς και μέσα από την πανελλήνια δυναστική εορτή των Αποβατηρίων, δηλαδή των μνημονικών εορτών και των τελετών που τις συνόδευαν σε ανάμνηση του παραπάνω γεγονότος,  καθ’όλη  την περίοδο της βασιλείας του .  Η μελέτη κινείται στο χώρο της ιστορικής ανθρωπολογίας και στηρίζεται σ’ένα πλούσιο αρχειακό υλικό της περιόδου 1832-1862 που εναπόκειται    στην Κεντρική Υπηρεσία των Γενικών Αρχείων του Κράτους (Γ.Α.Κ.) και στα Γ.Α.Κ. Νομού Αργολίδας.  Με  κύρια βάση το πρωτογενές αυτό υλικό η μελέτη καλείται να απαντήσει σε μια σειρά από ερωτήματα,  όπως: Γιατί η τελετή της άφιξης του Όθωνα και οι επέτειοί της αποτέλεσαν  τη σημαντικότερη από τις δυναστικές μνημονικές τελετές της περιόδου της βασιλείας του σε σημείο μάλιστα που να χαρακτηρίζεται εθνική;  Πώς εξηγείται η «μακρά τους  διάρκεια»; Ποια ακριβώς ήταν η αρχή που κατά καιρούς τις οργάνωνε σκηνοθετώντας συχνά μέχρι την τελευταία λεπτομέρεια  τις τελετές αυτές; Τι επεδίωκε  με την εγκαθίδρυση, την απεικόνιση και επανάληψή τους; Τι απήχηση είχαν στο ευρύ κοινό και ποια ήταν η εμπλοκή του στους εορτασμούς;  Και ακόμα πώς οι συγκεκριμένες τελετές συνδέονταν  με ζητήματα αποδοχής και υιοθέτησης της  ελληνικότητας;

Τhe unprecedented surge of studies and translations of Walter Benjamin's work over the past decades is partly due to his foregrounding as an emblematic figure of the marginal intellectual if the interbellum period. His image as an exile and tragic suicide has assumed an almost 'mythical' dimension, expanding his fame outside academia where his work is principally studied.

However, while as he himself has underlined, the afterlife of a work constantly transforms its own prehistory, inversely, its reception reveals the theoretical questions of the age in which the work is appoached.......

The plurality of the appropriations of Benjamin's work is reinforced by the variety of the topics and genres in which he wrote: city portraits, autobiographical pieces, essays on photography and the cinema, theses for a philisophy of history, theories of language and translation, studies on philosophical and artistic trends, such as romanticism, surrealism and baroque, as well as highly original and influential readings of major modern authors , such as Goethe, Proust, Baudelaire, Kafka and Brecht, alongside the development of a theory of modernity in his incomplete 'Ur-historical' work of the Parisian Arcades......


A proof of the unique breadth and interdisciplinarity of Benjamin's work is the fact that it is being studied from the perspective of many disciplines - for example, the social sciences, art history, architecture, cultural studies, and literary studies, alongside philosophy, as the contributions to this volume suggest.

However, despite the notorious fragmentariness of Benjamin's work, there are a number of themes traversing his work thus unifying it.The question of art in relation to other crucial subjects, such as the new media of representation, urban environment, politics and history, constantly recur in Benjamins's work while as central axis remains a critique of the culture of modernity, the uncovering of its images and myths, precisely through images and myth.

Η πρωτοφανής έκρηξη μελετών και μεταφράσεων του έργου του Μπένγιαμιν μισό αιώνα μετά τον θάνατό του σε έναν βαθμό απορρέει από την αναγωγή του σε εμβληματική φιγούρα περιθωριακού διανοούμενου του μεσοπολέμου. Η εικόνα του ως εξόριστου και τραγικού αυτόχειρα έχει λάβει μια σχεδόν "μυθική" διάσταση, διευρύνοντας τη φήμη του και πέραν των ορίων του πανεπιστημίου, όπου κυρίως μελετάται. Όμως ενώ, όπως υπογράμμισε ο ίδιος, η μεταθανάτια ιστορία ενός έργου μεταβάλλει διαρκώς και την ίδια την προ-ιστορία του, η υποδοχή του, αντίστροφα, αποκαλύπτει τους θεωρητικούς προβληματισμούς και τα ερωτήματα της ίδιας της εποχής κατά την οποία επαναπροσεγγίζεται το έργο . . .

Απόδειξη της μοναδικής ευρύτητας και συνθετότητας του έργου του Μπένγιαμιν είναι ότι οι συγγραφείς του παρόντος τόμου, πανεπιστημιακοί και άλλοι ειδικοί ερευνητές, προέρχονται από διάφορους επιστημονικούς κλάδους - τη φιλοσοφία, τη φιλολογία, τις κοινωνικές επιστήμες, την αρχιτεκτονική. Οι πολλαπλές διασταυρώσεις που παρουσιάζουν τα δοκίμια του βιβλίου, πιστοποιούν την ύπαρξη μιας ορισμένης ενότητας στο περιβόητα θραυσματικό έργο του Μπένγιαμιν.

"Book synopsis
Recent developments in cultural and literary discourse have upset traditional certainties and produced a plurality of positions that are often articulated in agonistic terms. Culture Agonistes both reflects this conflictual diversity and engages with the dialogic exchange taking place in cultural locations, discursive contexts and narrative histories. Born out of an International Conference on Culture and American Studies organized by the Hellenic Association for American Studies and the University of Athens (2000), this volume addresses a wide scope of controversial issues. It raises questions about the value of the aesthetic in current artistic and critical practices, the effects of globalization in relation to feminism and postcolonialism, and the imbrication of modernism with gender and consumer culture. Moreover, it highlights the challenges to canonical texts posed by revisionist mythmaking and translatability as well as the destabilizing condition of exilic consciousness. The mix of voices and approaches represented by the contributors indicate their engagement in discursive contestations that seek to transform sites of conflict into sites of revision and innovation.

Starting off from questions about the present state of literature and the relations between national languages and cultures in the age of globalization, this volume explores the place and prospects of contemporary Greek literature, and especially the possible confluences, dependence or radical differences it may have in relation to contemporary anglophone literatures holding a hegemonic position globally. The other literatures are not seen as a measure against which to evaluate Greek literatature but rather as a means of mutual defininition and and self-awareness. The comparative persepctive allows for the tracing of the tacit assumptions at work in the production of culture which in turn also determine which imaginary worlds are constructed, what is chosen as representative and what difference they can make in the domain of writing.

The main aim of the contributions to thins volume is the exploration of the cultural landscape of Greece through fiction since the mid 70s and at the same time the placing of contemprorary Greek fiction in the Western literary map through the means of critical theory. A parallel aim is a critical presentation of the 'travelling' of Greek fiction abroad, of its encounters with foreign texts and readers.

ΓΕΝΙΚΑ

Ξεκινώντας από ερωτήματα σχετικά με την κατάσταση της λογοτεχνίας και τις σχέσεις μεταξύ εθνικών γλωσσών και πολιτισμών στην εποχή της παγκοσμιοποίησης, ο συλλογικός αυτός τόμος διερευνά τη θέση και τις προοπτικές της σύγχρονης ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας, τις σχέσεις σύγκλισης, εξάρτησης ή αντιπαράθεσης που πιθανώς έχει με άλλες λογοτεχνίες και κυρίως με την αγγλόφωνη ως φορέα του ηγεμονικού πολιτισμού σήμερα. Η τελευταία δεν υποδεικνύεται ως αυτονόητος «κανόνας» βάσει του οποίου κρίνεται αξιολογικά η (περιφερειακή) ελληνική λογοτεχνία, αλλά ως όρος αυτοπροσδιορισμού και μέσο γνωριμίας της ελληνικής με τον εαυτό της. Η συγκριτική προοπτική επιτρέπει την ανίχνευση σιωπηρών παραδοχών κάθε πολιτισμού που καθορίζουν τι φαντασιακούς κόσμους αυτός κατασκευάζει, τι επιλέγει να προβάλει ως αντιπροσωπευτικό και τι καινούργιο μπορεί να φέρει στον χώρο της γραφής.

Στόχος των κειμένων είναι η εξερεύνηση του πολιτισμικού τοπίου στην Ελλάδα μέσω της πεζογραφίας από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του '70 (οπότε σημειώθηκε μια τάση εξωστρέφειας) και η ταυτόχρονη τοποθέτηση της ελληνικής πεζογραφίας στον λογοτεχνικό χάρτη της Δύσης με πυξίδα τις σύγχρονες διεθνείς τάσεις της κριτικής θεωρίας. Παράλληλος στόχος είναι η κριτική παρουσίαση των τρόπων διάδοσής της στο εξωτερικό, δηλαδή της συνάντησής της με τα «ξένα» έργα και το αναγνωστικό κοινό.
Στην εισαγωγή τους, οι επιμελήτριες του τόμου Α. Σπυροπούλου και Θ. Τσιμπούκη προσδιορίζουν διεξοδικά τις συντεταγμένες αυτής της «χαρτογράφησης», αναδεικνύοντας την ενότητα και την πολλαπλότητα της συλλογής.
Το πρώτο μέρος (με τίτλο «Νέες μυθοπλαστικές τοπογραφίες» και κείμενα των Δ. Δημηρούλη, Β. Λαμπρόπουλου, Γ. Καλογερά και Δ. Τζιόβα) αφορά την εξερεύνηση των γεωγραφικών και συμβολικών σχέσεων τόπου, που συνιστούν ταυτόχρονα θεματικό όρο του σύγχρονου μυθιστορήματος και πλαίσιο παραγωγής του.
Το δεύτερο μέρος (με τίτλο «Συγκλίσεις ελληνικής και διεθνούς πεζογραφίας» και κείμενα των Β. Αθανασόπουλου, Β. Χατζηβασιλείου, Α. Ζήρα και Ά. Μαραγκόπουλου) επισκοπεί το μορφολογικό τοπίο της σύγχρονης ελληνικής πεζογραφίας σε σύγκριση με αντίστοιχες ιδεολογικές, αφηγηματικές και υφολογικές τάσεις της ξένης λογοτεχνίας, που διαγράφονται στο πεδίο του μεταμοντέρνου.
Τα ζητήματα επιλογής, ανάδειξης και πρόσληψης του σύγχρονου ελληνικού μυθιστορήματος στο εξωτερικό, αποτελούν αντικείμενο του τρίτου μέρους (με τίτλο «Μεταβάσεις της σύγχρονης ελληνικής πεζογραφίας στο εξωτερικό» και κείμενα των Β. Καλότυχου, Ά. Σουλογιάννη, Τ. Καγιαλή, Ευ. Γαραντούδη και Ντ. Κόνολι).
Τέλος, το τέταρτο μέρος (με τίτλο «Μαρτυρίες Ελλήνων πεζογράφων» και κείμενα των Θ. Βαλτινού, Μ. Δούκα, Δ. Λάλα-Κριστ, Χρ. Μηλιώνη, Δ. Νόλλα, Ν. Παπανδρέου, Έ. Σωτηροπούλου, Σ. Τριανταφύλλου και Στρ. Χαβιαρά) καταγράφει σκέψεις Ελλήνων συγγραφέων για τη σχέση τους με την ελληνική λογοτεχνική παράδοση και την ξένη λογοτεχνία και προσωπικές τους εμπειρίες από την έκδοση του έργου τους στο εξωτερικό.
