Globally, redevelopment of the riverfront remains popular and is part of the urban planning agenda. However, this process is still often constrained by a set of strategic issues and difficulties in the cities of developing countries. The relationship between the urban fabric of the city of Mosul and its river frontage is a major criterion in evaluating the approaches and approaches to preserving the main features of the urban landscape of the city. The current research aims to discuss the integrative preservation as a working methodology for a longterm plan based on previous global experiences and the basic guidelines approved by international laws to submit proposals for the reconstruction of the river front of ancient Mosul. It also aims to discuss the relationship between the historical urban fabric and the water environment and highlight the various methods that can be adopted to develop this essential part of the urban fabric of the city. The research adopts the methodology of comparative analysis of conservation trends and intervention mechanisms, including integrative conservation, analysis of a number of relevant international studies, analysis of international conventions concerned with conservation, and obtaining qualitative data from a group of experts specialized in both aspects of urban preservation and urban renewal. This is in addition to obtaining quantitative data using the questionnaire method by designing a set of questions following Likert's Five-point Scale method and analyzing them using Microsoft Excel 2010, and applying them to the case study represented by the riverfront of the old city of Mosul.

Till now, as a visual landmark of 45 meters height, it isthe icon that gives the city its identity across nine centuries, which represents as anobvious indicator for orienting the direction of inhabitants movements in the old built fabric from remote distance, and as a component of this environment, it is characterized as a vital value for the visual views those can be seen through alleys that lead to the Grand Mosque, consequently, presenting richness, continuity and variety for such visual scenes. As a result of disorder of urban built, random buildings, unconsidered construction and planning decisions, opening new streets in the old city in the past century, and the lack of prior urban design dimension which gives the Minaret its importance to the surrounding areas of the mosque, all that led to reduce the Minaret role as an urban landmark, besides creating vision coverage that prevented the Minaret from being as a visual mark. This paper attempts to study all visual districts in Mosul city in which the Minaret currently can be seen through alleys, in any viewpoint, direction and skyline with determining the built constructions that cover or reduce the visual sight toward the Minaret , evaluating the extent and level of its perception as a landmark on pedestrians level, identifying the best visual positions in the visual sequence, and presenting planning and urban recommendations about how to improve the Minaret role as a monumental and architectural landmark in the city of Mosul.

For this purpose, a model that examines the transformation of knowledge by means of analyzing students representations, has been developed. This model was correlated with the data collection model about the design problem. Solutions demonstrated through time line, indicated the relationship between the two models, and were examined out if the designer was reformed data spatially, functionally, symbolically, typologically, technologically, or socially. The implementation of the proposed models has been fulfilled by a case study carried out at the urban design studio at the Department of Architecture at Mosul University which protracted for one semester, and the results were demonstrated graphically to declare the impact of each item of the second model on the various design phases.

Like other Arabic Islamic cities, Mosul is characterized with its richness of cultural and spiritual heritage and all its alleys tell the story of building and their memories. The most recent studies on inter urban renewal for many cities in Iraq (including the project of urban renewal of the old city of Mosul, done at end of 2009) adopted by the General Directorate of Urban Planning, which has referred to a number of expert companies, is a clear example of that projects which the country took an interest in it recently. Although the project has prepared surveys of the case and has adopted strategy of identifying a set of thematic routes that formed essential arteries of the urban area of the old city of Mosul, but that strategy remained in many cases, vague and far from the reality of the urban space and its potentiality. This paper attempts to evaluate the strategy of the election of such routes carried out by that project through the findings of that study on one hand. In addition, between the reality of the surveying of a number of those routes on the other hand, to distinguish the compatibility of the real situation with the goals of that project and then the validity of those strategies. The results declare that the election of such routs is far away from actuality, so that it is true to announce that this strategy is invalid with in the corresponding of potentiality of the actual case of Mosul city.

Till recently, in the protection process of historical cities, the concentration has been on the tangible cultural heritage, built environment and historical buildings in old districts ;while safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage has been generally neglected. This paper aims at highlighting the significant role of the intangible heritage in the urban renewal policies of old historical districts. It undertakes the conservation and urban renewal activities of Mosul Old City (MOC) as a case study, and it explains that there are broad distinctions in various aspects between space structural analysis and intangible elements investigation, which designates that the intangible elements do not correlate to material or synthetic items within the urban fabric in the same high grade that is associated with the inhabitants memory of the historical area. It emphasizes the importance of the preservation of intangible heritage besides the tangible one in the urban renewal policies.

These facades are characterized by a distinctive architectural style that gives a sense of place and local identity. Their design depends on the organization of architectural elements in syntactic characteristics, which are restricted by topological, geometrical, and dimensional relationships that responded to social, technical, and environmental requirements. Those restrictions made a special style in the local architecture that reveals the social and cultural influences of the residents. Shape Grammar is an effective system in analyzing the architecture structures because it combines both morphological and dimensional values In the analyzing. Shape Grammar regulates the architectural elements and their relationships in specific rules to conserve these traditional facades and their values. In the conservation of built heritage, organizing these elements and defining their rules is essential. This paper seeks to derive the standard and parameters of shape grammar to regenerate the damaged traditional facades of Mosul Old City as a case study (especially after the great damage as a result of the last war in 2017), by determining the rules that restrict the relationships and the transformations in the structures of these elements in the virtual reconstruction of urban heritage according to principles of traditional architecture. The research analyzes and classifies the elements of the case study to obtain its shape grammar that enables the regenerating of these facades in the same architectural language and characteristics.

They all lead to the conviction that all elements, species, and ecosystems are part of the perfect universe created by GOD. Hence, respecting the law of nature is an obligation of every Muslim, who by definition has " submitted " himself, body and soul, to the Creator. Depending on the main Islamic concept in the Qur'an " And remember when He made you successors after the 'Aad and settled you in the land, [and] you take for yourselves palaces from its plains and carve from the mountains, homes. " (Al-'A`rāf, 7:74). This paper tried to discuss the main principles of Islamic roles that deal with nature as a main resource to architecture and human as a wise consumer for these resources. It aims to increase awareness to the importance of the theme of Islamic earthen architecture by expounding the core of the conceptual basis for the same. It also presents some general principles and ideas around which a comprehensive theory on sustainability in Islamic architecture, in line with the requirements of the Islamic worldview while fully conforming to the dictates of different circumstances, environments and cultures, can be developed today. To deal with such an issue, the paper will try to project the built environment and architecture of the old resident area of Mosul city within the "Islamic building Fiqh" to investigate how Islam deals with such an environment and its resources. İn this paper we intende to highlight the concept of traditional architecture and how it preserve the earth resources by using materials and building components and recycled component too. The three main opportunities for making use of existing materials are: reusing existing buildings, reusing building components, and using recycled materials. Examples of buildings that have been reused or that have incorporated reused or recycled materials are illustrated in

At the international scale, many experiments have been successfully performed in employing adaptive reuse of heritage properties. This paper aims to explore and analyse a number of these practices in order to present a procedure based on deriving adequate standards and requirements useful in selecting the most appropriate alternative for the historic building- the paper assumes the necessity to adopt criteria that potentially affect the efficiency and convenience of the new type of use of a historic building and its values- and to use them in implementing conservation of architectural heritage buildings and built environment of Mosul Old City. The 4REs procedure (Reduce, Reuse, Rehabilitate, Recycle) is proposed here for determining a set of criteria needed for making decision of prolonging the useful age of historic and traditional buildings. Reducing the influence harmful causes; rehabilitating and adaptive reusing of the heritage buildings and historic sites; as well building recycling by giving it a new life or by reusing its sustainable materials and methods of traditional construction are essential interventions for exploiting and saving such irreplaceable resources.

MULTICULTURAL HERITAGE DEVELOPMENT, AS AN ECONOMICAL SOURCE Islamic Art and Architecture in Georgia, Caucuses

Such investments can be achieved by various tourism kinds - both nature and heritage - which are considered as a vital economical source for many countries that have appropriate potentialities for utilizing such type of funds. Countries with multicultural heritage have more opportunities for attracting tourists, both those with multiple interests, or those having correlated or similar heritage, for instance, Turkey, Spain and nations of south east of Asia, which have multiple sequences civilizations. Caucasus region is considered as one of essential places in multicultural heritage, since it is located on the silk road and it represents a node for the four directions of the world. This paper attempts to highlight the substance of the Islamic art and architecture heritage in south Caucasus and Georgia, which requires preservation activities for rising its significance as it is an important layer of the Georgian multicultural heritage. The research found that improving this layer could increase the tourists attraction, especially for the Islamic-Arabic world, and produce this sector of Georgian heritage as a supporter factor to the economic strategy of the country.

In previous three decades or less, many monuments and heritage buildings in Mosul old city have been deteriorated progressively due to the lack of monitoring and controlling procedures for preserving these irreplaceable outstanding constructions.
Preventive conservation describes research and interventions aimed at reducing deterioration rates and minimizing risks to the constructions. It aims to identify and reduce potential hazards to cultural artifacts with thoughtful control of their surroundings. It attempts to mitigate the occurrence of damage and deterioration through research and the implementation of procedures which enhance the safety of cultural objects and buildings. By exploring analyzing and comparing a number of international experiments, this paper attempts to highlight main initial factors that contribute or lead to damage Mosul heritage buildings, and to put guidelines and recommendations for preparing a preventive conservation plan for the cultural heritage of Mosul Old City.

THE IMPACT OF GENIUS LOCI ON URBAN RENEWAL POLICIES

Yet, the tangible culture, built environment and historic buildings in heritage districts are the focused issue in the protection process of the current old historic cities authorities, whereas the preservation of intangible cultural heritage has rarely been carried out consciously.
Nowadays, after the successive publication of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the following charters of the ICOMOS, the rising international concentration to intangible heritage conservation of historic zones has become a progressively aware topic in global level.
This paper demonstrates the impact of Genius Loci (The spirit of place) as an intangible character that influences the progress of the conservation and urban renewal of (MOT) Mosul Old Town as a case study, and besides, how the safeguarding intangible heritage can improve the conservation of the tangible heritage, particularly with conserving the Genius Loci of historic areas.
It is affirmed that there is a significant contradiction between results obtained from site intangible elements investigations and those obtained from space syntax investigations, and this leads to say that any conscious renewal policy of old historic districts must take Genius Loci in high level of consideration.
