By investigating the bilateral cooperation dynamics, the study aims to provide insights into how the two countries can enhance their economic ties and promote mutual development. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach which enables a comprehensive examination of the trade and economic relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative insights. The analysis reveals the current state of the bilateral economic relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan, indicating that the trade and investment volume has been relatively low. However, important trade complementarities exist and specific sectors, such as energy, tourism, ICT and agri-food products, show potential for future growth and diversification. This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the trade and economic relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. The identification of specific sectors with potential for growth and export intensification adds novelty and practical relevance to the study. The findings offer valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to strengthen the bilateral economic ties between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. This study has limitations, such as its concentration on the years 2012 to 2021 and incomplete data. Future research could expand the temporal scope, integrate additional data sources, and examine the impact of external factors, such as geopolitical dynamics, on Bulgaria-Azerbaijan economic relations.

China has reformed away from central planning in the past four decades, but has it achieved a fully-fledged market economy? The paper sheds new light on the contested nature of China’s market economy status from a political economy perspective. It draws on the Varieties of Capitalism analytical framework. The paper explains China’s status as a market economy as the product of a national model of state-dominated institutional complementarities between high levels of trade openness and domestic regulation, including nonmarket principles for the deployment of financial resources and labour.

The European Commission has called on EU countries to step up their industrial policies and try to restore the central position of manufacturing for creating jobs and growth. In this context the aim of the paper is to look at the process of structural change in Bulgaria in the period after its EU accession. An attempt is made to explore whether the Bulgarian economy has managed to reindustrialize and improve its industrial competitiveness taking advantage of the alleged benefits of the full EU membership. The analysis has been made in comparison to another two similar countries. The results show that so far reindustrialization has not been achieved and, despite the slight improvement in the industrial competitiveness, in relative terms it is extremely unsatisfactory.

The results bear evidence of a low export performance in terms of diversification, factor intensity and technological sophistication and a significant lagging behind countries like Hungary, Slovakia, and in certain fields Romania. It is mostly attributed to low-grade sector specialization. The integration within the EU so far has not accelerated technological catch-up. For instance, recent evidence indicates unexpected export growth in traditional industries as Bulgaria overwhelmingly remains steadily anchored in low value-added competition on international markets.

One of the most important dynamic effects of regional economic integration is the enhanced possibility of international technology transfer among participating countries. The European integration provides such an opportunity for the technological laggard Bulgaria. The objective of the paper is to provide an analysis of market-mediated international transfer of technology to Bulgaria after its European Union accession through the following major channels: foreign trade, foreign direct investment, licensing. The results show that the process of technological catchingup is not an automatic one and Bulgaria does not leverage its EU membership sufficiently to embark on a sustainable path of t...

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) which shares a common neighbourhood and is a crucial supplier of raw materials interested in getting technology transfer represents a natural trading partner of the EU. While there are currently no political (sanctions against Russia) and legal (Belarus is not yet a WTO member) preconditions for starting free trade negotiations, given the high economic significance and positive security implications such a possibility should be considered. This paper undertakes a comprehensive assessment of the potential welfare effects of a possible future EU-EEU FTA based on the Sussex Framework. Such an analysis provides important information on bilateral trade patt...

Such significant indicators as the country’s GDP, the provision of the population with necessary products and services, labor productivity within the sectors of the national economy, the level of technological and environmental safety directly depend on the pace of development and the state of industrial sectors. The economic and defense potential of the country is largely determined by the dynamic development of enterprises of the machine-building complex. The state of the material and technical base and the level of innovation indicate the need to develop a number of measures aimed at improving the efficiency of large machine-building enterprises. Currently, due attention is not paid to the investment strategy development. Because of this, it is impossible to implement the most important programs of systemic modernization of the leading sectors ...
Export Specialisation of Bulgaria in the Relations with the European Union (1999-2007)

Given the high openness of the Bulgarian economy towards the EU, the quality and dynamics of its export specialisation vis-a-vis the EU predetermine to a great extent the national economy structural changes, its growth rates and the well-being of the population. Though most of the analyzed indicators for export structure, comparative advantages, factor intensity, technological competitiveness, degree of processing and value added of exports, intensity of intra-industry specialisation show a favorable trend of improvement in recent years, in comparative perspective it is concluded that Bulgaria has developed a relatively unfavorable, low-grade and not perspective international specialisation in the relations with the EU. During the analyzed period (1999-2007) Bulgaria has objectively taken up a position of a peripheral econo...

Different management decisions require different data sets. The paper studies the issues of making managerial decisions at the university on the development and promotion of basic educational programs at the educational services market based on the results of data inventory. The article identifies the areas that need to be studied in order to make managerial decisions on ways to promote the main educational programs at the university, and analyzes the information accumulated both inside the university and in the external environment. The authors of the article proposed an algorithm for database inventory, which involves the identification of data sources, including digital traces, the analysis of the authority to use databases with the necessary registries of...

However, the global crisis of 2008-09 has demonstrated that relying on a single sector prone to high price volatility cannot be a viable strategy for development. The government of Kazakhstan well realizes that and for already 2 decades has been pursuing various industrial policy initiatives to build a more diversified and competitive economy. The paper aims to examine how successful were those policies by applying various indicators of export diversification. The results show that progress has been very limited as the country’s export basket is highly concentrated and still dominated by oil. This suggests that Kazakhstan should ensure better implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of its diversification initiatives.
