The city of Hvar was developing under the Venetian rule (1420 – 1797) as a naval arsenal for building (in times of conjucture), repair and maintenance of the patrol galleys of the eastern Adriatic towns-communes under Venice. The Hvar naval arsenal represents the peak of the development of shipbuilding at the civilizational level of building wooden ships. We can talk about a logistical, urban, architectural, functionally and technologically thought-out shipbuilding project that results from the analysis of the spatial concept of the naval arsenal as well as the designed and elaborated details of the production process of construction, repairs and maintenance of patrol/police ships of the East Adriatic cities-communes in an arsenal building. There was a fast and efficient exchange of ships on slipways and the quality construction and maintenance of serial ships, the fleet of coast guard patrol rowships of the eastern Adriatic cities-communes under the rule of Venice, and other supply arsenal ships of the Venetian Adriatic fleet on the ground floor of a monumental arsenal building. The naval arsenal in Hvar, due to its favorable geographical location was the extended arm of the Great arsenal of Venice, and thanks to this fact, the Hvar arsenal transmitted new and developed its own know-how and experience, and technologically, socially and economically influenced the development of the city of Hvar, middle Dalmatia and especially of Adriatic shipbuilding, although in the circumstances of a rigid governance of the Venetian oligarchy, to the interests and profits of which all was subordinated and strictly supervised.

Hvarski vojnopomorski arsenal predstavlja vrhunac razvoja brodogradnje civilizacijskoga nivoa gradnje drvenih brodova.
